Telegram Stars vs TON vs Card Payments for Creators

How Telegram Stars, TON and card payments differ for creators: what each is for, how buyers pay, how you get paid, the risks, and how to choose.

Telegram Stars vs TON vs Card Payments for Creators

Telegram Stars are Telegram's in-app currency, and they are the expected way to sell digital goods and content inside Telegram, such as paid posts, subscriptions and items in bots or Mini Apps. TON is a cryptocurrency on the TON blockchain, which Telegram uses in several places, including Fragment and payouts. Card payments run through outside payment providers and suit physical goods and services, or sales made outside Telegram.

Many creators use more than one. This guide compares them so you can choose with clear eyes. It is general information, not financial, tax or investment advice.

What each option is

Telegram Stars

Stars are bought by users inside Telegram, often through their phone's app store or other official routes shown in the app. Users spend them on digital things: paid media in channels, channel subscriptions, reactions, and goods or services sold by bots and Mini Apps. Creators who receive Stars can use them inside Telegram, for example on Telegram Ads, or withdraw them through Fragment, subject to Telegram's current rules. Our guide Telegram Stars explained covers the basics.

TON

TON is a blockchain with its own cryptocurrency, Toncoin. Telegram uses it for Fragment, its marketplace for usernames and numbers, and for some payouts to creators. People hold TON in crypto wallets and can send it to each other directly. See TON and Telegram explained.

Card payments

Bots can accept card payments for physical goods and services through Telegram's Bot Payments feature, which connects to third-party payment providers. Creators can also sell through their own website and use any card processor they like. Each provider has its own fees, rules and countries, so check their current terms.

Comparing the three

What you can sell

  • Stars: digital goods and services inside Telegram, such as paid posts, subscriptions, bot features and Mini App items. Telegram's rules for bots generally expect digital goods to be sold for Stars; check the current Bot Payments rules.
  • TON: anything a buyer agrees to pay crypto for, subject to the law where you and the buyer are. Inside Telegram it is mainly used for Fragment and payouts.
  • Cards: physical goods and services through bots, or anything you sell through your own checkout outside Telegram, subject to the provider's rules.

How easy it is for buyers

  • Stars: buyers pay in a few taps without leaving Telegram. They do not share card details with you.
  • TON: buyers need a crypto wallet and some Toncoin. Easy for people who already use crypto, a barrier for everyone else.
  • Cards: familiar to almost everyone. Buyers enter card details with the payment provider.

How you get paid

  • Stars: your balance builds up in Telegram. You can withdraw through Fragment under Telegram's current conditions, which can include waiting periods and minimum amounts. Check the current rules before planning around a withdrawal date.
  • TON: arrives in your wallet directly, usually quickly. You decide whether to keep it or exchange it.
  • Cards: the provider pays out to your bank account on its own schedule, after its fees.

Costs

  • Stars: the price users pay for Stars includes app store and platform costs, so what you receive is less than what the buyer spent. Check Telegram's current terms.
  • TON: network fees per transaction, plus exchange fees if you convert.
  • Cards: provider fees, and sometimes extra fees for currency conversion or refunds.

Fees and rates change. Do not rely on numbers from old guides; check each provider's current terms.

Price stability

  • Stars: prices are set by you in Stars. What a Star is worth when you withdraw depends on Telegram's terms at that time.
  • TON: the value of Toncoin can rise or fall sharply. Income received in TON can be worth noticeably more or less a week later.
  • Cards: you price in a normal currency, so the amount is predictable.

Refunds and disputes

  • Stars: Telegram allows bots to refund Star payments. Set a clear refund policy.
  • TON: blockchain transfers cannot be reversed by a third party. A refund means sending a new payment back.
  • Cards: buyers can dispute charges with their bank. Keep records of what you delivered.

Privacy

  • Stars: you do not see buyers' card details.
  • TON: transactions are recorded on a public blockchain, linked to wallet addresses.
  • Cards: the payment provider handles card data. You usually receive the buyer's name and order details.

Which one to use

Choose Stars if

  • You sell digital content or features inside Telegram, such as paid posts, subscriptions or bot features.
  • You want the smoothest checkout for Telegram users.
  • See paid Telegram channels explained for ways to use them.

Choose TON if

  • Your audience already uses crypto wallets.
  • You understand the price risk and the rules where you live.

Choose cards if

  • You sell physical products or services.
  • You sell outside Telegram, for example on your own site.
  • Your buyers do not use Stars or crypto.

As an example of mixing options, TGDirectory sells its labelled Featured placements for crypto on the website and for Telegram Stars in its Telegram Mini App, so each buyer can pay in the way that fits where they are.

Steps to set up payments safely

  1. Decide what you sell and whether it is digital or physical. That largely decides which method applies.
  2. Read Telegram's current Bot Payments and Stars rules if you sell through a bot.
  3. Choose a payment provider or wallet from an official source. Our guide on Telegram bot payments for developers covers the technical side.
  4. Set prices, a refund policy and clear delivery terms before you launch.
  5. Test a small payment end to end, including a refund.
  6. Keep records of sales and payouts for tax purposes. Rules differ by country, so check local rules or ask a professional.

Common mistakes

  • Selling digital goods by card inside a bot when Stars are expected. This can break Telegram's rules. Check them first.
  • Treating TON income as fixed. Its value moves. Decide in advance when you will convert, if at all.
  • Promising instant withdrawals. Stars withdrawals follow Telegram's conditions. Do not promise collaborators a date you do not control.
  • Trusting payment "helpers" in private messages. Nobody legitimate needs your login code, wallet recovery phrase or password. Read crypto scams on Telegram.
  • Ignoring taxes. Income in Stars, TON or cards is still income in most places. Check the rules where you live.

FAQ

Can I turn Telegram Stars into money?

Creators can withdraw Stars through Fragment, under Telegram's current rules, which may include waiting periods and minimums. Check the current terms in Telegram and on Fragment.

Do buyers need crypto to pay with Stars?

No. Users buy Stars through official routes in the Telegram app, often with the payment method they already use in their app store.

Is TON a good investment?

This guide does not give investment advice. Crypto prices can swing sharply. Only hold what you can afford to see drop in value, and do your own research.

Can I accept card payments in a Telegram bot?

Yes, for physical goods and services, through Telegram's Bot Payments feature and a supported provider. Digital goods generally use Stars. Check the current rules.

Which method has the lowest fees?

It depends on the provider, the platform and your country, and fees change. Compare current terms for your own case.

Summary

Stars are the native way to sell digital content inside Telegram, with the easiest checkout for buyers. TON suits audiences that already use crypto, with fast transfers but price risk. Cards suit physical goods and sales outside Telegram, with familiar checkout and predictable amounts. Match the method to what you sell and who buys it, check each option's current rules and fees, and keep records for tax. Nothing here is investment advice.
