What Telegram protects, what it does not, and the settings and habits that keep your account, number and chats safe.
Telegram is reasonably safe for everyday messaging if you understand how it works and set it up well. Normal chats are encrypted on the way to Telegram's servers, but only secret chats are end-to-end encrypted. Most real-world problems come from scams and weak account security, not from broken encryption.
This guide explains what Telegram protects, where its limits are, and the handful of settings that make the biggest difference.
People ask "is Telegram safe?" and mean several different things. It helps to split the question up.
Telegram gives you good tools for the first two. The third depends on which type of chat you use. The fourth depends mostly on your own judgement, because Telegram is a huge open platform where anyone can create a channel.
Your normal one-to-one chats, groups and channels are cloud chats. They are encrypted between your device and Telegram's servers, and stored on those servers so you can open them on any device. That is what makes Telegram convenient: log in on a new phone or computer and your history is there.
The trade-off is that cloud chats are not end-to-end encrypted. Telegram holds the keys needed to deliver your history to your devices. For most everyday conversations that is an acceptable trade. For very sensitive conversations, it may not be.
Secret chats are end-to-end encrypted. Only the two devices in the chat can read the messages. They are one-to-one only, and they live on the device where you started them, so they do not sync to your other devices. You can also set messages to disappear after a timer.
If you want the full picture, read our guide to Telegram secret chats.
Groups and channels are always cloud-based. There is no end-to-end encrypted group chat on Telegram. Treat anything you post in a group or channel as visible to everyone in it, and potentially forwarded or screenshotted.
Encryption gets most of the attention, but it is rarely how people get hurt on Telegram. These are the more common risks.
Most hacked Telegram accounts are lost because someone shared a login code or fell for a fake login page. Telegram's login code is the key to your account. Nobody legitimate will ever ask you for it. Our guide on why you must never share a Telegram login code explains how these tricks work.
Telegram's openness attracts scammers. Common patterns include fake support accounts, fake investment "opportunities", impersonated channel admins, fake giveaways and bots that ask for your phone number and code. See how to spot Telegram scams for a fuller list.
By default, some details may be visible to more people than you expect. Your phone number, profile photo, last seen time and bio all have their own privacy settings. Many people never open those settings.
Bots can be very useful, but a bot only sees what you send it, and what it does with that is up to whoever runs it. Links in messages can lead to phishing pages that look like Telegram. Be careful what you type into any page you reached from a chat.
You can make your account much safer in about ten minutes. Settings names can change between app versions, so look in your app's Privacy and Security section if a label differs.
Settings only go so far. These habits cover most of the rest.
Channel owners face a few extra risks, because a channel can be valuable.
If you list your channel in a directory, look for one that reviews submissions. On TGDirectory, every submission is checked by a person before it appears, and illegal, pornographic and scam channels are not accepted. Owners can also claim their listing by adding our bot as an admin, which gives an "Owner verified" badge. That badge proves control of the channel; it is not Telegram's own verification and not an endorsement of content.
Telegram is a general-purpose platform with a lot of public, unmoderated content. Anyone can create a channel or group, and strangers can try to start conversations. Parents should check Telegram's current age rules in its terms of service, and review privacy settings together with any younger user. Limiting who can message, call and add them to groups is a sensible starting point.
Only secret chats are end-to-end encrypted. Normal chats, groups and channels are encrypted between your device and Telegram's servers and stored in Telegram's cloud.
Cloud chats are stored on Telegram's servers, and Telegram holds the keys needed to deliver them to your devices. Secret chats are end-to-end encrypted, so only the two devices in the chat can read them. Read Telegram's own privacy policy for how it handles data.
Telegram's privacy policy describes when it may disclose user data, and that policy has changed over time. Read the current version on Telegram's website rather than relying on older articles.
Knowing your number is not enough on its own. Attackers usually need your login code too, which is why they try to trick you into sharing it. Two-step verification adds a password they would also need.
Joining a channel does not show your phone number to other subscribers. The risk is in the content and links a channel shares. Be sceptical of channels pushing money-making schemes.
It depends on what you need. Telegram offers strong account controls and end-to-end encryption in secret chats, but not by default in every chat. Choose based on which risks matter most to you.
Telegram is safe enough for most everyday use when you set it up properly. Know the difference between cloud chats and secret chats, and use secret chats when you need end-to-end encryption. Turn on two-step verification with a recovery email, review your sessions, and limit who sees your number. Most of all, never share a login code, and treat unexpected money offers and "support" messages as likely scams.
