How to Run Polls and Quizzes on Telegram

To run a poll on Telegram, open a chat, channel or group, choose the poll option from the attachment menu, type a question and answers, pick your settings and send it. A quiz is a poll with one correct answer that Telegram reveals after someone votes. Both take seconds to create and are one of the easiest ways to get your audience involved.

This guide explains the settings, how to write questions people want to answer, and how to use what you learn.

Polls vs quizzes

Telegram has two closely related formats:

  • Poll. You ask a question with several answers. People vote, and the results show how votes are split. There is no right answer.
  • Quiz. You ask a question with one correct answer. When someone answers, Telegram shows whether they were right. You can usually add a short explanation that appears after they answer.

Use polls to learn what your audience thinks or wants. Use quizzes to teach, test knowledge or add some fun.

How to create a poll

The steps are similar on phone, desktop and web, though buttons may look different.

  1. Open the channel, group or chat where you want to post.
  2. Open the attachment menu, the same place you add photos or files.
  3. Choose the poll option.
  4. Type your question.
  5. Add the answer options.
  6. Choose your settings, described below.
  7. Send it.

In groups, ordinary members can create polls only if the group's permissions allow it. Admins can change this in the group settings.

You can also schedule a poll like any other message, so it goes out at a time your audience is active. See how to schedule messages on Telegram.

Poll settings explained

The exact options can change between app versions, but these are the main ones.

Anonymous voting

In an anonymous poll, nobody can see who voted for what, only the totals. In a poll with visible votes, people can see who chose each answer.

Anonymous polls get more honest answers on sensitive questions. Visible votes suit small groups making decisions together, such as choosing a meeting date. In channels, polls are generally anonymous, so check what your app allows.

Multiple answers

You can allow people to pick more than one option. This suits questions like "Which topics interest you?" For a decision between alternatives, keep it to one answer.

Quiz mode

Turning on quiz mode makes it a quiz. You then mark one answer as correct and, where available, add an explanation. Multiple answers usually cannot be combined with quiz mode, because a quiz has a single right answer.

How to create a quiz

  1. Start a new poll from the attachment menu.
  2. Write the question and the answer options.
  3. Switch on quiz mode.
  4. Mark the correct answer.
  5. Add a short explanation if your app offers it. This is where the teaching happens.
  6. Send it.

Good quiz explanations are short and useful. "Correct! Two-step verification adds a password on top of the login code" teaches more than just "Correct!".

Closing a poll

You can stop a poll so that no one can vote any more. The final results stay visible. This is useful when you need a decision by a certain time, or when a poll is old and no longer relevant.

Tell people in advance when you plan to close it, so nobody feels left out.

Writing questions people want to answer

Keep it short

The question should be readable in one glance. If it needs explanation, post a short message before the poll.

Make answers clear and distinct

Answers should not overlap. "Sometimes" and "Occasionally" are too similar. Use answers that a reader can tell apart instantly.

Offer a fair spread

If you ask for an opinion, include answers on all sides. A poll where every option is positive tells you nothing.

Add an "other" or "just show me results" option

Some people want to see results without having an opinion. An extra option keeps them from voting at random, which would distort your results.

Ask questions that lead somewhere

The best polls lead to a decision or a follow-up post. "What should our next guide cover?" is better than a poll you never mention again.

Ideas for channels and groups

Here are some examples you can adapt.

  • Content planning: "Which topic should we cover next week?"
  • Format feedback: "Do you prefer short daily posts or one longer weekly post?"
  • Knowledge quizzes: "Which of these is a sign of a scam message?" with an explanation.
  • Community decisions: "Which day suits you for the next live Q&A?"
  • Light fun: A quiz about your topic's history.

Polls also work well inside a linked discussion group, where people can comment on the results. See how to turn a Telegram channel audience into a community.

Using poll results

A poll is only useful if you act on it.

  1. Share the result in a short follow-up post.
  2. Say what you will do because of it.
  3. Do it, and mention that it came from the poll.
  4. Repeat important polls occasionally to see if opinions changed.

Remember that a poll shows the views of the people who voted, not everyone who saw it. Quiet readers may think differently.

Polls and engagement

Polls are easy to answer, so they can draw more interaction than some other post types. That can make a channel feel more active. But do not use polls only to inflate numbers. Post them when you genuinely want to know the answer.

If you want to understand how your posts perform, see Telegram channel statistics explained.

Common mistakes

  • Leading questions. "Don't you agree this is great?" gets agreement, not information.
  • Too many options. Long answer lists are tiring. Keep options to what people can scan quickly.
  • Overlapping answers. People pick at random when options are too similar.
  • Never sharing results. People stop voting if nothing comes of it.
  • Visible votes on sensitive topics. People will not answer honestly if others can see their vote.
  • Quizzes without explanations. A quiz that does not teach anything is a missed chance.

FAQ

Can I see who voted in my poll?

Only if the poll is not anonymous. In an anonymous poll, you see totals only. You choose this when creating the poll, and it cannot usually be changed afterwards.

Can I edit a poll after sending it?

Options for editing polls are limited and vary between versions. If you made a mistake, it is often easiest to delete the poll and send a corrected one quickly.

Can people change their vote?

In regular polls, many app versions let people retract their vote and vote again. Quiz answers are usually final. Check how it works in your app.

Can bots run polls?

Yes, bots can send polls and quizzes, which is useful for automated quizzes or regular check-ins. See what are Telegram bots.

Are polls available in private chats?

Polls work in groups and channels. Availability in one-to-one chats has varied, so check your app.

Summary

Polls and quizzes are quick ways to involve your audience. Create them from the attachment menu, choose anonymous or visible votes, allow multiple answers when it makes sense, and use quiz mode with a short explanation for teaching. Write short, clear questions with distinct answers, close polls when a decision is needed, and always share and act on the results.
