How Telegram's verification check works, who gets it, why it cannot be bought, how to spot fake checks and verification scams, and the owner badge on TGDirectory.
A verification check next to a channel's name tells readers that the channel is the real one — the official account of the person, brand or organisation it claims to be. This guide explains how it works, how to tell a real check from a fake one, and how to avoid the scams around it.
One thing up front: verification is about identity, not quality. A check says "this is really them". It does not say the content is good, accurate or safe.
Telegram gives its verification check to official channels, groups and bots of well-known people, brands and organisations — typically ones that are already verified on other major platforms and at risk of being impersonated. Personal user accounts are generally not verified this way.
Important facts:
Applying does not guarantee verification. Telegram reviews each request and decides. If your channel is not yet notable or not verified elsewhere, build that first — a request without proof is usually declined.
Telegram's approach to verification has changed over the years and may change again. Check Telegram's own help pages and official channels for the current rules rather than relying on blog posts or messages from strangers.
Most channels will never have Telegram's check, and that is normal. A growing hobby channel, a local business or a niche news channel is usually not a target for impersonation on the scale the check is meant for. Your readers can still tell your channel is real in other ways, covered below.
Telegram has added a separate system in which approved organisations can verify accounts that are connected to them. These checks look different from Telegram's own and show which organisation issued them. They confirm a link to that organisation, not that Telegram itself verified the account.
Which organisations can issue these checks, and how, is decided by Telegram and may change. If someone tells you they can arrange a third-party check for a fee, treat it with the same suspicion as any verification seller, and check Telegram's current rules yourself.
The most common trick is simple: an impersonator puts a check emoji in the channel's name. In a list it can look almost the same as the real thing.
If you find an impersonator, report it through Telegram's report option. Our guide on how to find Telegram channels has more on spotting fakes before you join.
Any offer to sell you a blue check, whatever the price or the deadline, is a scam. Typical signs:
Never share a login code. Anyone who has it can take over your account and your channel.
Telegram does not contact channel owners like this to sell verification. A code sent by Telegram is for you alone and should never be shared with anyone, including someone who claims to work for Telegram.
On TGDirectory, a channel owner can confirm ownership through our claim process: you prove that you control the channel by adding our bot as an admin. The channel's page then shows an "Owner verified" badge.
What the badge says, and what it does not:
You never need to share a login code, a password or a session file to claim a listing. If anyone claiming to be from TGDirectory asks for one, it is not us.
When a reader compares two listings with similar names, the badge shows which one has a confirmed owner. Together with the measured figures on each page — subscribers, views per post, engagement rate and when the channel last posted — it gives readers more to go on than a name and an avatar.
Apply through Telegram's official bot, @VerifyBot. You usually need verified accounts on other major platforms (or an official website for organisations) that link back to your Telegram channel. The bot shows the current requirements, and Telegram decides each request.
No. Telegram does not sell verification, and nobody can buy it on your behalf. Anyone offering it for money is running a scam.
There is no subscriber number that earns verification. A large channel that is not a recognised brand or public figure is usually not verified.
Telegram's own check means Telegram verified the account. A third-party check is issued by an approved organisation and shows a link to that organisation. Check Telegram's current rules for how each one looks and works.
No. It confirms that the person who claimed the listing runs the channel, by adding our bot as an admin. It only appears on TGDirectory and is not an endorsement of content.
Do not reply with payment or codes. Block the account and report it through Telegram. Then check your active sessions and make sure two-step verification is turned on.
It can help readers trust that they found the real channel. Growth still comes from good content and promotion. See how to grow a Telegram channel and how to promote a Telegram channel.
Telegram's blue check is free, cannot be bought and is given to notable official channels, groups and bots. You apply through @VerifyBot with proof from other platforms. Ignore anyone selling it, and never share a login code. Readers can spot fakes by checking the @username, the official link and the channel's history. On TGDirectory, the Owner verified badge shows that a listing is run by the person who claimed it.
Ownership confirmed through our claim process — not an endorsement of their content.
