How paying with Telegram Stars works, how crypto payments inside Telegram usually work, the differences between them, and how to avoid payment scams.
Inside Telegram you can usually pay in two ways: with Telegram Stars, Telegram's in-app currency for digital goods, or with crypto through a wallet connected to a bot or Mini App. Stars stay inside Telegram's own system, while crypto moves on a public blockchain and is usually final. This guide explains both, step by step, with a strong focus on safety. Nothing here is investment advice.
Stars are a digital currency you buy inside Telegram and spend on digital goods and services. You may use them to:
For a full introduction, read Telegram Stars explained.
Some bots, Mini Apps and services accept cryptocurrency. You usually pay from a crypto wallet, either the wallet built into Telegram in some regions or another wallet you connect. Payments typically move on a blockchain such as TON. See Telegram Wallet explained and TON and Telegram: how they relate.
Some bots also accept card payments through payment providers, especially for physical goods. That is a separate flow, handled by the provider the bot uses.
Telegram changes its screens often, so details may differ. In general:
You can usually see your Stars balance and history in your Telegram settings. Check there if a purchase did not arrive as expected.
A Stars purchase is between you and the seller, who is often a bot developer or a creator. If something goes wrong, contact the seller first, through the bot or the support contact it lists. Telegram's terms set the rules for disputes, so read them in the app or on Telegram's help pages.
Crypto payments are less standard. Each bot or Mini App can work a little differently. A typical flow:
Crypto transfers are usually final. If you send to the wrong address or on the wrong network, the money may be lost.
For a deeper comparison that includes cards, read Telegram Stars vs TON vs card payments.
TGDirectory offers an optional Featured placement, a paid and clearly labelled spot in the homepage featured rotation. It can be bought when you submit a channel: with crypto on the website, or with Telegram Stars in our Telegram Mini App. A Featured placement never changes rankings, and it is refunded if the channel is not published. Listing itself is free through Submit a channel.
A bot can send a message that looks like a payment request. Real Stars payments appear in Telegram's own payment window, not as a link to an outside website asking for card details or a login code.
A seller who moves you from a bot's payment flow to a direct crypto transfer "to save fees" removes the protections you had. Be very cautious.
Strangers selling Stars, Premium or gifts at a discount are often scammers. Buy through the app.
Some Mini Apps ask for permissions that let them move funds. Read approvals carefully. If you do not understand one, cancel.
Someone "accidentally" sends you too much and asks you to send the difference back. The original payment may be fake or reversed.
Our guide to crypto scams on Telegram covers more patterns.
Digital goods and services inside Telegram, such as bot features, paid posts, gifts, reactions and some channel subscriptions. Options change, so check in the app.
Stars are designed for digital goods and services. Physical goods sold through bots typically use other payment providers.
Not necessarily. Crypto removes the middleman but also most protection. Mistakes and scams are usually final.
Contact the seller first. Telegram's terms set the wider rules, so check them in the app or on Telegram's help pages.
No. Almost everything in Telegram works without crypto. You only need a wallet if a service you want requires crypto.
Stars are for spending inside Telegram. Crypto prices move, and this guide is not investment advice.
Inside Telegram you can pay with Stars, which stay in Telegram's own system and are meant for digital goods, or with crypto from a connected wallet, which is usually final. Pay only through official payment windows or trusted apps, check every detail before confirming and never share codes or recovery phrases. This is general information, not financial, legal or tax advice.
