What Are Telegram Bots and How Do They Work?

A plain explanation of Telegram bots: what they are, how they talk to Telegram behind the scenes, what they can do for you, and their limits.

Bots & Mini AppsWhat Are Telegram Bots and How Do They Work?

A Telegram bot is a special Telegram account run by software instead of a person. You chat with it like any contact, but its replies come from a program its developer runs on a server. Bots can answer questions, send alerts, take payments, moderate groups and open small apps inside Telegram.

This guide explains what bots are, how they work behind the scenes, what they can and cannot do, and how to start using them sensibly.

What a Telegram bot actually is

A bot looks a lot like a normal user. It has a name, a profile picture, a description and a username. The username always ends in "bot", for example something like @weather_example_bot. That ending is one quick way to tell a bot from a person.

The difference is who answers. When you message a person, a human reads it. When you message a bot, your message is passed to a program. That program decides what to send back, usually within a second or two.

Bots are created through an official Telegram bot called @BotFather. Anyone with a Telegram account can create one. That openness is why there are so many bots, and also why you should be careful about which ones you trust.

Bots versus regular accounts

A few things set bots apart from human accounts:

  • A bot does not need a phone number.
  • A bot cannot start a private conversation with you. You have to open it and press Start (or message it) first.
  • A bot does not see your phone number unless you choose to share your contact with it.
  • In groups, bots usually only see messages meant for them, unless the developer changes a setting or the bot is made an admin.
  • A bot is labelled as a bot in Telegram, so it cannot quietly pretend to be a human contact.

How bots work behind the scenes

You do not need to be technical to use bots. Still, a basic picture of how they work makes it easier to judge what a bot can do and what it knows about you.

The bot, Telegram and the developer's server

There are three parts in every bot conversation:

  1. You, typing in a Telegram app on your phone or computer.
  2. Telegram's servers, which receive your message as they would any other.
  3. The developer's server, where the bot's program runs.

When you send a message to a bot, Telegram forwards it to the developer's program through the official Bot API. The program reads it, does its work, and asks Telegram to send a reply. Telegram then delivers that reply to you.

This means the developer, not Telegram, decides what happens to the messages you send. A bot that stores your messages is storing them on its owner's systems.

The bot token

When someone creates a bot with @BotFather, they receive a long secret string called a token. The token is the key that lets their program act as that bot. Whoever holds the token controls the bot completely.

If you ever build a bot, treat its token like a password. We cover this in more detail in How to Create a Telegram Bot With BotFather.

Commands, buttons and menus

Most bots respond to commands that start with a slash, such as /start or /help. Many also show buttons, either under a message or in place of your keyboard. Some offer a menu button next to the text field.

Buttons make bots easier to use, because you tap instead of typing exact words. Behind every button is still a message or a request that goes to the developer's program.

What Telegram bots can do

Bots cover a wide range of jobs. Here are the most common kinds.

Information and alerts

Some bots send news, weather, reminders or updates from other services. You subscribe once and the bot messages you when something happens.

Tools and utilities

Bots can convert files, translate text, create polls, shorten links or manage to-do lists. They work inside the chat, so you do not need another app.

Group and channel management

Admins use bots to welcome new members, remove spam, enforce rules and schedule posts. A bot that manages a channel or group needs admin rights there to do its job. Our separate guide on adding bots to channels and groups walks through the steps.

Payments and shops

Bots can send invoices and accept payments. For digital goods and services, Telegram uses its own currency, Telegram Stars. Stars are bought inside Telegram and spent in bots and Mini Apps.

Mini apps and games

Some bots open a full web interface inside Telegram, called a Mini App. That can be a shop, a booking form or a game. Our guide Telegram Mini Apps Explained goes deeper.

Inline bots

Some bots work from any chat. You type the bot's username followed by a search, and results appear above your keyboard. You can then send one into the conversation. These are called inline bots.

What bots cannot do

Knowing the limits is just as useful as knowing the features.

  • They cannot message you first. Until you start a bot, it has no way to reach you privately.
  • They cannot read your other chats. A bot only sees messages sent to it, or messages in groups where it has been added and allowed to read.
  • They cannot see your phone number by default. They only get it if you tap a button to share your contact.
  • They cannot join groups or channels on their own. Someone with the right permissions has to add them.
  • They cannot see secret chats. Secret chats are one-to-one, end-to-end encrypted conversations between people, and bots are not part of them.

How to start using a bot

Using a bot takes less than a minute.

  1. Find the bot by its exact username in Telegram's search, or through a link you trust.
  2. Open the chat and check the name, username and description.
  3. Press Start. This sends the /start command and lets the bot reply.
  4. Read the bot's first message. Good bots explain what they do and list their commands.
  5. Use the buttons or commands it offers. Type /help if you get stuck.
  6. If you no longer want it, stop or block the bot from its chat. You can also delete the chat.

Before pressing Start on a bot you found by chance, read How to Find a Telegram Bot Safely.

Common mistakes

  • Trusting a bot because it looks official. Anyone can copy a logo and a name. Check the exact username and where you found the link.
  • Sharing login codes or passwords with a bot. No genuine bot needs your Telegram login code or your two-step verification password. Never send them.
  • Assuming Telegram runs every bot. Almost all bots are made by independent developers. Telegram provides the platform, not the service.
  • Sharing your contact without thinking. Some bots ask for your phone number. Only share it if the service really needs it and you trust the owner.
  • Giving a bot more admin rights than it needs. In a group or channel, grant only the permissions the bot's job requires.
  • Ignoring payments details. Before paying a bot, check who is selling, what you get, and how refunds work.

FAQ

Are Telegram bots free to use?

Most bots are free to start. Some charge for extra features, often in Telegram Stars or through another payment method. The bot should tell you the price before you pay anything.

Can a bot see my phone number?

Not by default. A bot sees basic public profile details, such as your name, username and a numeric user ID. It only gets your phone number if you choose to share your contact with it.

Who makes Telegram bots?

Mostly independent developers, companies and hobbyists. Telegram itself runs a small number of official bots, such as @BotFather. Everything else is run by whoever created it.

Can a bot read my private chats?

No. A bot only receives messages sent directly to it, or messages in groups and channels where it was added. It has no access to your other conversations.

How can I tell if an account is a bot?

Bot usernames end in "bot", and Telegram labels bot accounts in their profile. If something claims to be a person but the username ends in "bot", it is a bot.

Can I list my bot in a directory?

Yes. You can submit a bot to TGDirectory for free on the submit page. A person reviews every submission before it appears.

Summary

Telegram bots are accounts run by software. You message them, Telegram passes your message to the developer's program, and the program replies. They can send alerts, run tools, manage groups, take payments and open mini apps. They cannot message you first, read your other chats or see your phone number unless you share it. Use bots from sources you trust, never share login codes, and give admin bots only the rights they need.
