The warning signs shared by most Telegram scams, the tricks scammers use most often, and what to do if you think you have been targeted.
Most Telegram scams share a few warning signs: an unexpected message, pressure to act fast, a request for money, crypto or a login code, and a promise that sounds too good. If a stranger contacts you first and the conversation moves towards payment or codes, assume it is a scam until you can prove otherwise.
This guide covers the common types of scam, the red flags to look for, and what to do if you have already been caught.
Telegram is open by design. Anyone can create a channel, group or bot, choose almost any display name and message people who share a group with them. That openness is useful, but it also makes impersonation and mass messaging easy.
Scams are rarely clever. They work because they catch people when they are busy, hopeful or worried. Knowing the patterns is the best protection.
Whatever the story, most scams include several of these.
One red flag is a reason to slow down. Two or more is a reason to stop.
Someone claiming to be from Telegram says your account will be deleted, needs verification, or has broken rules. They ask for your login code, password, or for you to log in through a link.
Telegram does not ask for your code or password in a chat. Read why you must never share a Telegram login code.
You join a group or channel, then receive a private message from someone with the same name and photo as an admin. They offer help, a deal or a "private" investment.
Real admins of large communities rarely message members first. Check the username, not the display name. Impersonators often use usernames that differ by a letter or two.
Some groups make you pass a check before you can chat. Scam groups copy this and ask you to share your phone number, then enter the code Telegram sends you. That code logs the scammer into your account.
A real group check never needs your login code.
These promise fast profits from trading, mining or a new token. Early "returns" may even be paid to build trust before a larger deposit disappears. Screenshots of profits and testimonials are easy to fake.

A message says you have won something or qualify for free tokens. To claim it, you must pay a small fee, connect a wallet, or enter your seed phrase.
Never type a wallet seed phrase into anything someone sends you. Our guide on how Telegram airdrops work explains what to check.
You are offered easy paid work, such as liking posts or rating products. Small payments arrive at first. Then you are asked to deposit money to unlock bigger tasks, and that money is never returned.
A seller offers goods, services, usernames or entire channels at a good price, asks for payment first, then vanishes. If you are buying or selling a channel, use a method that protects both sides and never pay a stranger up front.
Someone builds a friendly or romantic relationship over weeks, then has an emergency that needs money, or introduces an "investment" they have had great results with.
Channel owners get offers to buy ads or the whole channel. The "buyer" sends a link to a fake payment or login page, or asks to be made an admin first. Never give admin rights or login details as part of a deal.
When you are not sure, run through these steps.
A curated directory can help you find channels that a person has at least looked at. On TGDirectory, every listing is reviewed by a person before it appears, and scam channels are not accepted. Readers can also report a listing to moderators.
Review is not a guarantee. A channel can change after it is listed. An "Owner verified" badge on TGDirectory proves that someone controls the channel; it is not Telegram's verification and not an endorsement of what the channel says. Keep using your own judgement.
Telegram sends service notifications, such as login codes and alerts, from its official service account. It does not ask you to send it your code or password.
Not necessarily. Subscriber numbers can be bought or inflated. Look at what the channel actually posts and whether its claims can be checked.
Crypto payments are usually very hard to reverse. Report to the platform you used and to local authorities, and be wary of anyone promising recovery for a fee.
Their account may have been taken over. Ask them through a different method, such as a phone call, before opening it.
Do both. Reporting helps Telegram act on the account, and blocking stops further contact.
Telegram scams follow familiar patterns: a stranger reaches out, creates urgency, and asks for money, crypto, a wallet connection or a login code. Check usernames, go to official sources yourself and never share codes or seed phrases. If you are caught, stop paying, secure your account and report it.
