How to Transfer Ownership of a Telegram Channel

Hand a Telegram channel to a new owner the right way: requirements, step-by-step instructions, what you keep afterwards and how to avoid scams.

Running a ChannelHow to Transfer Ownership of a Telegram Channel

To transfer ownership of a Telegram channel, the current owner first makes the new person an admin, then opens that admin's rights and uses the transfer ownership option. Telegram asks for the owner's two-step verification password to confirm. Once done, the transfer cannot be undone by the old owner.

This guide covers the requirements, the steps and the safety checks that matter most.

What "owner" means on Telegram

Every channel has exactly one owner, usually the person who created it. The owner has every admin right and a few powers no admin has, including:

  • deleting the channel
  • transferring ownership
  • removing any admin, including those with full rights

Admins can be given many rights, but they are never the owner. Our guide on adding admins to a Telegram channel explains admin rights in detail.

Requirements before you can transfer

Telegram adds safety checks to ownership transfers. The exact conditions can change, but these are the ones you should expect.

  • Two-step verification must be on for the owner's account. Telegram may also require it to have been enabled for some time before a transfer is allowed. If you have not set it up yet, see how to set up Telegram two-step verification.
  • The owner's session may need to have been active for a while. A freshly logged-in device may not be allowed to transfer.
  • The new owner must already be an admin of the channel.
  • The new owner may need full admin rights. The transfer option often only appears once every right is switched on for that admin.

If the transfer option does not appear, or Telegram shows a message about waiting, it is usually one of these checks. The message in the app will normally say what is missing. Check Telegram's help pages for the current rules.

How to transfer ownership, step by step

  1. Make sure the new owner is subscribed to the channel, so you can find them.
  2. Open the channel and tap its name to open the channel info.
  3. Open the channel's settings and go to the administrators section.
  4. Add the new owner as an admin, or tap their name if they are already one.
  5. Switch on all admin rights for them.
  6. Look for the option to transfer channel ownership on the same screen. It is usually near the bottom.
  7. Read the warning. Telegram explains that the change is permanent.
  8. Enter your two-step verification password when asked.
  9. Confirm.

The new owner now controls the channel. You usually remain an admin afterwards, and the new owner can change or remove your rights.

Transferring a linked discussion group

A channel's comments live in a separate linked group with its own owner. Transferring the channel does not transfer that group. If the new owner should control comments too, repeat the process in the group.

Bots and other connected tools

Bots that act as admins stay in place after a transfer. Any bot you created through @BotFather is owned by your account, not by the channel, so it does not move with the channel. Decide together whether the new owner needs its own copy, or whether you will keep running it. See how to create a Telegram bot with BotFather for background.

When you might transfer ownership

  • Handing a project to a co-founder or teammate.
  • Moving a business channel from a personal account to a company account.
  • Stepping back from a community while keeping it alive.
  • Selling a channel. This carries the most risk and is covered below.

Selling a channel: be very careful

Channel sales are a common setting for scams. Transfers cannot be reversed by the old owner, and payments outside Telegram may also be hard to get back. A few rules reduce the risk.

  1. Agree the terms in writing before anything changes hands.
  2. Never send login codes or passwords. Ownership transfer does not require either party to share account access. Anyone asking for your login code is trying to take your account. Read why you should never share your Telegram login code.
  3. Use a payment method that both sides trust, and understand that some methods cannot be reversed.
  4. Be wary of rushed deals, last-minute changes or requests to move to a different chat app.
  5. Check the channel's real figures before buying. Subscriber counts can be inflated; views per post tell more.

Our guide on selling a Telegram channel safely goes into more detail. Telegram's own rules may also apply to buying and selling channels, so check them first.

What changes after the transfer

  • The new owner has full control, including deleting the channel.
  • The old owner usually stays as an admin, unless removed.
  • Subscribers do not see any change to the channel itself.
  • The channel's name, link, posts and settings stay as they were, until the new owner changes them.

If you are the new owner

  1. Check the admin list and remove anyone you do not know.
  2. Review bots with admin rights and remove any you will not use.
  3. Turn on two-step verification on your account if it is not on already.
  4. Review the channel's description and link. See how to write a Telegram channel description.

Directory listings after a transfer

If the channel is listed on TGDirectory, the listing stays with the channel. An "Owner verified" badge comes from someone proving control by adding our bot as an admin, and the site checks this with Telegram. If ownership has moved, the new owner can claim the listing in the same way. See how to claim your channel on TGDirectory.

Common mistakes

  • Trying to transfer without two-step verification. Telegram will refuse. Set it up well before you need it.
  • Giving the new owner partial rights. The transfer option may not appear until all rights are on.
  • Forgetting the discussion group. It has its own owner.
  • Sharing account access instead of transferring. This puts your whole account at risk.
  • Transferring before payment is settled in a sale.
  • Assuming you can undo it. Only the new owner can transfer it back.

FAQ

Can I undo an ownership transfer?

Not on your own. Only the new owner can transfer the channel back to you.

Why don't I see the transfer ownership option?

Usually because two-step verification is off or too recent, your session is too new, or the person is not an admin with full rights. The app normally explains which.

Does the new owner need Telegram Premium?

Ownership transfer is not tied to Premium. Check inside Telegram if a message suggests otherwise for your case.

Will subscribers be notified?

No general notice goes to subscribers. Post an announcement yourself if you want them to know.

Can an admin take ownership without the owner?

No. Only the owner can start a transfer, and it needs the owner's two-step verification password.

Summary

Transferring a Telegram channel means making the new person an admin with full rights, then using the transfer ownership option and confirming with your two-step verification password. Set up two-step verification in advance, remember the discussion group is separate, and never share login codes or passwords. The change is permanent, so be certain before you confirm.
