How to Use Topics in Telegram Groups

Learn what topics in Telegram groups are, how to turn them on, how to plan a topic structure members understand, and how to keep threads tidy.

How to Use Topics in Telegram Groups

Topics split a Telegram group into separate threads, so each subject has its own space instead of everything mixing in one chat. An admin turns topics on in the group's settings, then creates threads such as "Questions", "News" or "Off-topic". Members open the thread they care about and can mute the rest.

This guide covers how to set topics up, how to plan a structure people understand, and how to keep it working as the group grows.

What topics are and when to use them

A normal Telegram group is one long stream of messages. That works when the group is small or focused on one thing. When it grows, several conversations run at once and answers get lost.

With topics turned on, the group shows a list of threads instead of a single chat. Each topic has a name and an icon, its own message history and its own notification setting. Telegram also keeps a general thread for messages that do not belong anywhere else.

Topics are a good fit when:

  • Members regularly ask questions that get buried under chatter.
  • The group covers several clearly different subjects.
  • You want an announcements area inside the group where only admins post.
  • People complain about too many notifications.

They may be a poor fit for a small, casual group where everyone talks about everything. In that case, topics can make the group feel empty, because conversation is spread thin.

How to turn topics on

The exact steps depend on your Telegram app and version, but the process is similar everywhere.

  1. Open the group and go to its settings as the owner or an admin with enough rights.
  2. Look for the option to enable topics.
  3. Turn it on and save.
  4. Return to the group. You should now see a list of topics, starting with the general one.

If you cannot find the option, check that you have the right admin rights and that your app is up to date. Telegram's own help pages describe the current requirements.

Turning topics on changes how the group looks for everyone. Tell members before you do it, and explain where things will go.

How to create and manage topics

Creating a topic

Admins can create a new topic from the topic list. You choose a name and, usually, an icon or colour. Short, plain names work best: "Help", "Showcase", "Jobs", "Off-topic".

You can also decide whether ordinary members can create their own topics. This is a member permission in the group's settings. Allowing it suits groups where each topic is a separate question or project. Blocking it suits groups where you want a fixed structure.

Managing a topic

Admins can usually:

  • Rename a topic or change its icon.
  • Close a topic, so it stays readable but no one new can post.
  • Pin important topics so they appear at the top of the list.
  • Delete a topic you no longer need.

Closing is often better than deleting. A closed topic keeps its history, which is useful when people search for old answers.

Plan a topic structure members understand

The most common problem with topics is having too many. Members do not know where to post, so they post everywhere or nowhere.

Start small

  1. Write down the main reasons people come to your group.
  2. Group those reasons into a handful of categories.
  3. Create one topic per category, plus an announcements topic and an off-topic one.
  4. Watch where conversations naturally go for a few weeks.
  5. Add a new topic only when a subject keeps coming up in the wrong place.

Make the purpose obvious

Each topic should have a short pinned message at the top that says what belongs there. For example: "Ask questions about setup here. Search first, then post your question with your device and app version."

Put a short guide to all topics in your group rules and welcome message. Our guide on how to welcome new members in a Telegram group automatically explains how to send newcomers this information.

Use an announcements topic

A topic where only admins post works like a small channel inside the group. You can create it and then restrict posting there. Members can turn notifications on for this topic and mute everything else, so they never miss important news.

If your announcements are the main content and discussion is secondary, a channel with a linked discussion group may suit you better. See Telegram channel vs group.

Keep topics tidy as the group grows

Move posts to the right place

When someone posts in the wrong topic, reply kindly with the right one. Repeat posts can be deleted. Being consistent early saves a lot of work later.

Moderate per topic

Topics make it easier to apply different expectations to different spaces. Your "Help" topic might ask for clear questions and no memes, while "Off-topic" is relaxed. Write this into your rules so admins enforce it the same way. Our guide to how to write Telegram group rules helps here.

Slow mode and member permissions still apply to the whole group. If one topic gets busy, short-term measures such as closing it for a while may help.

Archive dead topics

Topics that have been quiet for a long time clutter the list. Close them, or merge their subject into a broader topic. A shorter list is easier for newcomers.

Topics and notifications

One of the biggest benefits of topics is better control over notifications. Members can mute the whole group and unmute only the topics they care about, or the other way round.

Tell members this is possible. Many people leave busy groups because of notifications, not because of the content. Showing them how to mute selected topics can keep them in the group.

Common mistakes

  • Too many topics on day one. A long list confuses people. Start with a few and grow.
  • Vague topic names. "General 2" or "Misc stuff" tells no one where to post.
  • No pinned explanation. Without a short description, every topic slowly turns into a second general chat.
  • Turning topics on without warning. Members may think messages have disappeared. Announce the change first.
  • Letting everyone create topics in a large group. This often leads to duplicates and spam topics.
  • Deleting topics with useful history. Closing keeps answers people may search for later.

FAQ

Can I turn topics off again?

In general, admins can switch topics off in the group settings. Check how your current app version handles existing messages before you do, and tell members first.

Can ordinary members create topics?

Only if you allow it. Creating topics is a permission you can grant or remove for members in the group's settings.

Do topics work in channels?

Topics are a group feature. Channels are one-way broadcasts, so they do not use topics in the same way. If you run a channel, you can link a discussion group and use topics there.

Can I search inside a single topic?

Telegram's search tools change over time. In many versions you can search within the group or a topic. Try it in your app to see what is available.

Will topics make my group more active?

Not by themselves. Topics organise existing activity. In a small group they can even make it look quieter. They help most when there is already enough conversation to spread across threads.

Summary

Topics turn a busy Telegram group into a set of clear threads. Turn them on in the group settings, start with a few well-named topics, and pin a short explanation in each. Use an admin-only announcements topic, show members how to mute what they do not need, and close topics that go quiet.
