Telegram Channel Engagement Rate: How to Measure It and Why It Matters

A channel's subscriber count is the first number everyone sees and the least useful one. What matters to readers, advertisers and to you is how many people actually read each post. That is what engagement rate measures.

This guide shows how to calculate it by hand, how to read it without fooling yourself, and how to use it to check a channel before you pay for an ad post.

The formula

Engagement rate on Telegram is usually calculated as:

Engagement rate = average views per post ÷ subscribers × 100

Example: a channel with 20,000 subscribers whose posts get 4,000 views on average has an engagement rate of 4,000 ÷ 20,000 × 100 = 20%.

The numbers in that example are made up to show the arithmetic. They are not a target or a typical value.

Some people use reactions, comments or forwards instead of views. Those are useful signals, but not every channel has reactions or comments switched on. Views are the one figure every channel post shows, so they make the fairest comparison.

Getting the numbers

Views per post: every channel post shows a view counter. Telegram counts each account once per post, including views of the post when it is forwarded. To get an average, take a recent batch of posts, for example the last 20. Add their views together, then divide by the number of posts.

Median views: the median is the middle value when you sort the posts by views. It is often more honest than the average, because one viral post can pull the average up a lot.

Subscribers: shown on the channel's profile.

Use recent posts only. Very new posts are still collecting views. Very old posts reflect a different audience size.

Worked example: average and median

Here is an illustrative example. The channel and its numbers are invented to show the method. They are not real data.

Imagine a channel with 10,000 subscribers. Its last ten posts, all at least a few days old, got these views:

  • 1,200
  • 1,350
  • 1,100
  • 9,800
  • 1,250
  • 1,400
  • 1,150
  • 1,300
  • 1,200
  • 1,250

Average: add them up. The total is 21,000. Divide by ten posts and the average is 2,100 views.

Median: sort the list from lowest to highest: 1,100, 1,150, 1,200, 1,200, 1,250, 1,250, 1,300, 1,350, 1,400, 9,800. With ten values, the median is halfway between the fifth and sixth values. Both are 1,250, so the median is 1,250 views.

Now the engagement rate both ways:

  • Using the average: 2,100 ÷ 10,000 × 100 = 21%.
  • Using the median: 1,250 ÷ 10,000 × 100 = 12.5%.

One post with 9,800 views nearly doubled the average. Nine of the ten posts sat between 1,100 and 1,400. So the median tells you far better what a normal post on this channel reaches. If you were buying an ad here, 1,250 is the figure to plan around, not 2,100.

When the average and median are close, the channel is steady. When the average is far above the median, a few posts are doing most of the work.

Why it matters

  • Advertisers buy views. A paid post reaches roughly as many people as a normal post gets views, not as many as the channel has subscribers.
  • It shows whether growth is real. If subscribers rise but views do not, the new subscribers are not reading.
  • It exposes bought subscribers. A channel with a very large subscriber count and very low views per post usually has many inactive or fake subscribers.
  • It helps you judge your own content. Compare your recent posts with each other. The posts that reach more of your audience tell you what readers want.

What changes the rate

Engagement rate naturally varies with:

  • Channel size. Larger channels usually have a lower rate, because a smaller share of a large audience reads every post.
  • Posting frequency. A channel posting many times a day spreads attention thinner per post.
  • Topic. Fast news is checked often. Niche channels can have very loyal readers.
  • Channel age. Older channels collect readers who have since gone quiet but never left.
  • Muted subscribers. Many people mute channels and read them only now and then, so a post can collect views slowly over days.

So compare a channel with channels of similar size and topic, not with a single universal "good" number. There is no honest single figure that fits every channel.

Spotting fake numbers

Warning signs:

  • views far below what the subscriber count suggests, on every post;
  • every post with almost exactly the same view count;
  • views that arrive almost all at once, then stop completely;
  • a subscriber count that jumped overnight while views stayed flat;
  • a subscriber count that keeps dropping, as fake accounts are removed;
  • reactions or comments that do not match the topic, or come from accounts with no history.

One sign on its own proves little. A channel can have a quiet week. Several signs together are worth taking seriously.

How to vet a channel before buying an ad post

Paying for a post in someone else's channel is a common way to grow. Here is a step-by-step check before you pay.

  1. Write down the subscriber count. Note the date, so you can compare later.
  2. Collect views from recent posts. Take the last 15 to 20 posts that are at least two or three days old. Skip pinned posts and anything posted in the last day.
  3. Work out the average and the median. Use the method in the worked example above.
  4. Calculate both engagement rates. If the average is much higher than the median, plan around the median.
  5. Look for earlier ads. Find previous paid posts in the channel. Compare their views with normal posts. Ads often get fewer views than regular content, and that is the figure you are really buying.
  6. Check the posting rhythm. Count posts per week. A channel posting a great deal pushes your ad down the feed quickly.
  7. Check when it last posted. A channel that stopped posting weeks ago has readers who may have stopped looking.
  8. Read the content. Make sure the audience matches your topic and language. High views from the wrong audience are worth little to you.
  9. Watch the numbers for a few days. If you can wait, check again. Real subscriber counts and views move in a natural way.
  10. Ask the owner for their statistics. Owners of larger channels can see detailed statistics inside Telegram. A screenshot is not proof, but a refusal is information too.

After your ad runs, track how many new subscribers or visitors it brought. That tells you more than any number you checked beforehand.

Common mistakes

  • Using the subscriber count as reach. A post reaches the people who view it, not everyone subscribed.
  • Trusting the average alone. One viral post can make a channel look far stronger than it is. Always check the median.
  • Including brand-new posts. A post from an hour ago has not finished collecting views and drags the figure down.
  • Comparing across very different channels. A small niche channel and a large news channel do not belong on the same scale.
  • Treating one warning sign as proof. Look for a pattern before deciding a channel is fake.
  • Chasing a rate instead of readers. Removing inactive subscribers can raise your rate without anyone new reading. Focus on posts people want to read.

Measured figures on TGDirectory

For listed channels, TGDirectory reads the public posts that Telegram shows on each channel's web preview and calculates the figures from there:

  • average views per post and median views,
  • engagement rate (average views ÷ subscribers),
  • posts per week,
  • when the channel last posted,
  • subscriber growth, from one real subscriber count per day that we record from the day we start watching a channel.

Every figure is measured or not shown. We do not estimate missing values or draw a history for days we did not measure. If a channel's web preview shows no readable view counts, the page shows nothing rather than a guess.

FAQ

How do you calculate engagement rate on Telegram?

Take the views of a batch of recent posts, add them up and divide by the number of posts. That is your average views per post. Divide it by the number of subscribers and multiply by 100.

What is a good engagement rate for a Telegram channel?

There is no single honest answer. It depends on channel size, topic, age and how often the channel posts. Compare a channel with others of similar size and topic, and look at its own trend over time.

Should I use average or median views?

Check both. The median shows what a typical post reaches. The average can be pulled up by one viral post. If the two are far apart, plan around the median.

Do forwarded posts count towards views?

Yes. Telegram counts a view when someone sees the post, including when they see it as a forward in another chat. Each account counts once per post.

Why are my views much lower than my subscribers?

That is normal. Many people mute channels and read only now and then. A large gap on every post can also mean inactive or fake subscribers, especially after a sudden jump.

Can I see engagement statistics inside Telegram?

Channel owners can open statistics in the channel's settings once the channel qualifies. The requirements have changed over time, so check inside Telegram. Anyone can still count views by hand from the posts.

How does TGDirectory get its numbers?

We read the public posts Telegram shows on each channel's web preview and record one subscriber count per day. Every figure is measured or not shown.

Summary

Divide average views per post by subscribers to get the engagement rate. Use the median to avoid viral outliers. Compare with channels of similar size and topic, and treat high subscribers with low views as a warning sign. Before buying an ad, check recent posts, earlier ads and how active the channel is.
