Telegram Character Limits for Messages, Captions and Bios

How long a Telegram message, media caption, bio, username, poll or bot description can be, what Premium changes, and how to write within each limit.

Running a ChannelTelegram Character Limits for Messages, Captions and Bios

A Telegram text message can be up to 4,096 characters, a caption on a photo, video or file is limited to 1,024 characters on a standard account, and a personal bio is short: 70 characters without Premium. Premium allows longer captions and a longer bio that can include a link. Usernames must be 5 to 32 characters. The sections below cover each limit, what counts as a character, and how to write well inside each one.

Telegram can change these limits, and some apps show a live counter when you are close to one. If a limit matters for something important, check in the app.

The limits at a glance

  • Text message: up to 4,096 characters. Telegram's developer documentation gives this limit for message text.
  • Media caption (standard account): up to 1,024 characters, per Telegram's developer documentation.
  • Media caption (Premium): longer. Telegram's Premium FAQ lists longer captions as a benefit.
  • Personal bio (standard account): 70 characters.
  • Personal bio (Premium): longer, and can contain a link. The app's own text describes the Premium bio as twice the standard length, and if Premium ends, only the first 70 characters stay visible.
  • Username: 5 to 32 characters, using a to z, 0 to 9 and underscores, and it cannot start with a number.
  • Poll question: up to 300 characters, per the Bot API documentation.
  • Poll answer option: up to 100 characters each, per Telegram's developer documentation.
  • Bot description: up to 512 characters; bot short description: up to 120 characters, both set in @BotFather or through the Bot API.

Channel and group descriptions and names also have limits. They are not published in one official place we could confirm, so use the counter or the warning the app shows when you edit them.

What counts as a character

Letters, spaces and line breaks

Every letter, digit, punctuation mark and space counts. Line breaks count too. A post with lots of short lines and blank lines between paragraphs uses more of the limit than the same words in a single paragraph, though the difference is small.

Formatting does not count as extra

Bold, italic, links and other formatting are stored separately from the text. Telegram's developer documentation measures the limit after formatting is parsed, so making a word bold does not use up characters. The link address behind linked text is also stored separately; only the visible words count.

Emoji can count as more than one

Some emoji are stored as several characters behind the scenes, especially flags, skin-tone variants and combined emoji. A message that is right at the limit can be pushed over by a few emoji. If you are close, remove one or two and check again.

Other alphabets

Characters from any alphabet count one by one in the same way as Latin letters in most cases. A message in Chinese or Japanese often fits more meaning into the same limit, because each character carries more.

Text messages: 4,096 characters

This is plenty for most chat messages and channel posts. A 4,096-character post is long on a phone screen, several scrolls at normal text size.

What happens if you go over

Most Telegram apps split a message that is too long into several messages automatically when you send it. That is fine in a chat. In a channel, it produces several posts in a row, each with its own notification behaviour and view count, and the split can fall mid-sentence.

Writing long posts for a channel

If your post is long:

  1. Check whether it should be shorter. Most channel readers prefer a post they can read in one go.
  2. If it must be long, split it yourself at natural points, such as part 1 and part 2, and schedule them close together.
  3. For very long content, consider a file (a PDF or document) or a link to a full article, with a short summary in the post.

Telegram's text formatting tools, such as bold headings and lists made with dashes, make long posts easier to scan. See the Telegram text formatting guide.

Captions: 1,024 characters (more with Premium)

Captions are the text attached to a photo, video, album, file or voice message. They are much shorter than normal messages on a standard account.

Why the caption limit trips people up

Channel owners often write a full post, attach a picture, and find the text is too long for a caption. The fixes:

  • Shorten the caption to the key message and put the details in a separate text post.
  • Send the text first, then the media, or the other way round, as two messages.
  • Use a link preview instead: a text message with a link shows a preview image from the linked page, and the text can use the full message limit.
  • Use Premium, which allows longer captions, if you post long captions often. Remember that the longer limit belongs to the account posting, so other admins without Premium cannot write captions that long.

Albums

An album shares one caption, which is shown with the album. The same caption limit applies.

Bio: 70 characters (longer with Premium)

The bio is the short "about" line on a personal profile. Seventy characters is about one short sentence.

Tips for a 70-character bio

  • Say what you do or what people can contact you about, in plain words.
  • Skip filler like "Welcome to my profile".
  • Use your channel's username if you want people to find your channel; on a standard account, a full web link may not be clickable in the bio, while an @username usually is.

Example (illustration only): "Baker in Leeds. Daily bread tips: @morningcrumb" fits easily.

Premium bio

Premium allows a longer bio and a link. If Premium ends, Telegram keeps the first 70 characters visible and hides the rest until you resubscribe, so put the most important part first.

Usernames: 5 to 32 characters

Usernames for people, channels, groups and bots follow the same basic rules:

  • 5 to 32 characters
  • letters a to z, digits 0 to 9 and underscores only
  • cannot start with a number
  • not case-sensitive for finding you

Bot usernames must also end in "bot". A username must be free; if someone else has it, you need a different one, or in some cases you can buy one on Fragment, Telegram's marketplace for usernames. See Telegram channel username tips and Telegram username not available.

Channel and group names and descriptions

Names and descriptions for channels and groups have their own limits, which Telegram shows when you edit them. Rather than relying on a number that may change, use these guidelines:

  • Name: short enough to read in the chat list without being cut off. Long names get truncated with "..." on phones.
  • Description: a few sentences that say what the channel is, who it is for and how often you post. The first line matters most, because it is what appears in previews.

See how to write a Telegram channel description for structures that fit the space.

Polls and quizzes

According to Telegram's developer documentation, a poll question can be up to 300 characters and each answer option up to 100 characters. Quizzes can also include an explanation shown after answering, which has its own, shorter limit.

Short options work better anyway: readers scan them in a second. If an option needs more than a short phrase, put the details in a message before the poll. See how to run polls and quizzes on Telegram.

Bots: descriptions and messages

If you run a bot:

  • The description, shown to users before they start the bot, can be up to 512 characters.
  • The short description, shown on the bot's profile and in shared links, can be up to 120 characters.
  • Messages a bot sends follow the same 4,096-character text limit and 1,024-character caption limit as standard accounts.

Set the descriptions through @BotFather. For setting up a bot, see how to create a Telegram bot with BotFather.

Worked example: fitting a channel post into a caption

An example of a post that was too long for a photo caption.

The draft: a 1,600-character recipe with a photo. As a caption, it will not fit on a standard account.

Three ways to publish it:

  1. Photo with a short caption, then the recipe as text: the caption says "Lemon drizzle cake, recipe below" and the next message holds the full recipe. Simple, but two notifications.
  2. Text post with a link preview: if the recipe is also on a website, a text message can hold the full recipe and the link generates an image preview.
  3. Trim to fit: keep the ingredients and method in short lines, drop the introduction, and move tips into a reply in the discussion group.

Option 3 often produces the best post, because the limit forces you to cut what readers would skim anyway.

Common mistakes

  • Writing a full post and then attaching media. Check the length before attaching; captions are much shorter.
  • Putting the key point at the end of a long bio. If Premium ends, only the first 70 characters remain visible.
  • Using lots of emoji in a post near the limit. Some emoji count as several characters.
  • Letting the app split a channel post. Split it yourself at a sensible point.
  • Long poll options. They are hard to read and may not fit. Keep them to a short phrase.
  • Assuming every admin has the same limits. Caption length depends on the posting account, so a long caption plan breaks when a non-Premium admin posts.

FAQ

What is the maximum length of a Telegram message?

4,096 characters per text message. Longer text is usually split into several messages by the app.

How long can a Telegram caption be?

1,024 characters on a standard account. Telegram Premium allows longer captions.

Why can't I write more in my Telegram bio?

Standard bios are limited to 70 characters. Premium allows a longer bio with a link.

Do bold text and links use up characters?

Formatting itself does not; only the visible text counts. A linked word counts as its visible letters, not the link address.

What are the rules for a Telegram username?

Five to 32 characters, using letters, digits and underscores, not starting with a number. Bot usernames must end in "bot".

Do these limits apply in channels and groups too?

Yes. Messages and captions in channels and groups have the same limits as in private chats.

Summary

Telegram allows 4,096 characters per text message and 1,024 per caption on a standard account, with longer captions on Premium. Bios are 70 characters, longer with Premium. Usernames are 5 to 32 characters of letters, digits and underscores. Formatting does not use up characters, but some emoji count as several. When something does not fit, split it yourself, move details into a separate message or file, or cut it down, which usually makes the post better.
