GrowthTelegram Folder Links: How to Grow With Shared Folders

Telegram folder links let you bundle several chats into one folder and share it with a single link. Anyone who opens the link can add the whole folder, and join every chat in it, in a couple of taps. For channel owners, a shared folder with related channels is a simple, low-cost way to cross-promote.

This guide explains how folder links work, how to set one up, and how to use them without annoying readers.

What a folder link is

Telegram lets users sort chats into folders, such as "Work", "News" or "Friends". If you are new to folders, read how to use Telegram folders first.

A shareable folder takes this further. You create a folder, choose which chats to include, and generate an invite link for it. When someone opens the link:

  1. Telegram shows the list of chats in the folder.
  2. They can choose which ones to join.
  3. The folder appears in their chat list.

Depending on how the feature currently works, when you later add chats to a shared folder, people who added it may be offered the new chats too. Check the current behaviour inside Telegram, since details can change.

Which chats can go in a folder link

In general, you can include chats you are allowed to invite people to. That typically means:

  • Public channels and groups.
  • Channels and groups where you are an admin with permission to invite users.

You usually cannot share private chats you do not manage, and you cannot share one-to-one chats. There may be a limit on how many chats a shared folder can hold. Check inside Telegram when you build one.

Why folder links help growth

Folder links are useful because they lower the effort of joining several related channels.

  • One link, many channels. A reader interested in a topic can join a whole set in one go.
  • Natural cross-promotion. Every channel in the folder shares the same link with its readers.
  • Organised for the reader. The folder keeps those channels together in their chat list.
  • Easy to share. A folder link can go in a post, a bio or a message.

They work best when the folder has a clear theme, such as "Python learning" or "Local news for one city". A random mix of unrelated channels gives readers no reason to add it.

How to create a shared folder

Menus can change between app versions and devices, so treat this as a general guide.

  1. Open Telegram's settings and find the folders section.
  2. Create a new folder and give it a clear, descriptive name.
  3. Add the chats you want to include, such as your channel and your partners' channels.
  4. Look for the option to share the folder or create an invite link.
  5. Choose which chats the link includes, if Telegram asks.
  6. Copy the link and share it.

If you cannot add a partner's private channel, ask its owner to create the folder instead, or to make you an admin with invite rights only if you fully trust each other. Never share your account login to do this.

Building a folder with partner channels

A shared folder is a form of cross-promotion, so the same rules apply. See our cross-promotion guide for the full process.

Choose partners carefully

  • Same topic area and language. The folder should make sense as a set.
  • Real, active audiences. Check views on recent posts, not only subscriber counts. Our guide to engagement rate explains how.
  • Good reputation. Every channel in the folder reflects on the others. Avoid anything spammy, misleading or unsafe.

Agree how it works

  1. Who creates and manages the folder. That person controls which chats are in it.
  2. What each channel posts. For example, one post sharing the folder link on an agreed date.
  3. How long the arrangement lasts.
  4. How changes are handled. Agree in advance whether the manager may add or remove channels.

Keep it small and focused

A folder with a few well-matched channels is easier for readers to understand than a long list. Readers can pick which chats to join, but a huge folder may still feel like spam.

Sharing your folder link

Once the folder is ready, share it where your audience will see it.

  • A dedicated post in each partner channel explaining what is in the folder and who it is for.
  • Your channel's pinned post or description.
  • Your social media profiles. See promoting a Telegram channel on social media.
  • Related groups, only where the rules allow links.

Explain the benefit in one sentence, for example "Five channels for learning Python, from beginner tips to job listings, in one folder."

Measuring the results

Folder links do not give you a clean per-channel breakdown in the same way named invite links do. A few ways to judge the effect:

  • Watch your subscriber growth in the days after the folder is shared.
  • Check whether views on new posts rise along with subscribers.
  • Compare with partners. Ask each channel how their numbers moved.

Telegram's own statistics for your channel may show where new subscribers came from. See Telegram channel statistics explained.

Common mistakes

  • A folder with no theme. Readers do not add a random collection.
  • Including weak or inactive channels, which make the whole folder look poor.
  • Adding channels to a shared folder without telling partners.
  • Sharing your account to set it up. Never share login codes or passwords. Read never share your Telegram login code.
  • Too many promotions. Sharing the folder link in every post annoys your existing readers.
  • Including scam or unsafe channels. It damages the trust of everyone in the folder.

FAQ

Do readers have to join every channel in a folder?

No. When they open a folder link, Telegram shows the chats and lets them choose which to join.

Can I include channels I do not own?

You can usually include public channels and groups, and private ones where you have permission to invite users. Always ask the owners before promoting their channels in your folder.

What happens if I add a channel to the folder later?

People who added the folder may be offered the new chat. The exact behaviour is decided by Telegram and can change, so check inside the app.

Is there a limit on how many chats a shared folder can contain?

Telegram sets limits on folders and shared folders, and these can differ for Telegram Premium users. Check the current limits inside the app.

Are folder links better than normal cross-promotion?

They are a different tool. A folder link is good for a themed set of several channels. A single recommendation post is better when you want to explain one partner channel in detail.

Summary

Shared folder links bundle several chats into one link that readers can add in a couple of taps. Build a small, themed folder with partners who have real audiences, agree who manages it, and share the link with a clear one-sentence benefit. Watch growth and views afterwards. Never share account access to set one up, and only include channels you would recommend yourself.
