How Telegram Gifts work, what makes a gift collectible, how they relate to Stars and TON, and the scams to avoid. Not investment advice.
Telegram Gifts are small digital items you can send to another user, paid for with Telegram Stars. They show up on the recipient's profile, and some can be turned into "collectible" gifts that are unique and can be transferred. They are a fun way to say thanks, but collectible gifts also attract speculation and scams. This guide explains how they work, without any investment advice.
A gift is an animated item you buy with Stars and send to someone. The recipient sees it in the chat and can choose to display it on their profile. It is a little like a digital greeting card that stays visible.
Gifts are bought with Telegram Stars, Telegram's own in-app currency. If you are new to Stars, read Telegram Stars explained first.
Regular gifts are the standard designs available in the app's gift menu. Many people can own the same design. Depending on Telegram's current rules, a recipient may be able to keep a regular gift on their profile or convert it into Stars. The exact conversion rules change, so check inside the app.
Some designs are released in limited quantities. Once they are gone, they are no longer sold in the app. Limited availability is what makes some people treat them as collectibles.
Telegram has introduced a way to upgrade certain gifts into collectible gifts. An upgraded gift becomes a unique item, often with its own number and a combination of visual traits such as a model, a backdrop and a symbol.
Collectible gifts can usually be:
Upgrading and transferring may cost Stars, and the rules have changed over time. Always check the current options and fees in the app before you act.
When a collectible gift is moved on-chain, it is recorded on TON, the blockchain Telegram works with for several features. At that point it behaves more like other blockchain collectibles. It sits in a crypto wallet and can be traded on marketplaces that support it. For background, see TON and Telegram: how they relate and Telegram Wallet explained.
Most gifts are sent for ordinary reasons:
For channel owners, gifts can be part of how fans show appreciation. If you run a channel, our guide on how to make money on Telegram covers the wider picture of creator income.
Telegram changes its menus often, so the exact steps may differ. In general:
The recipient decides whether to show it on their profile.
Collectible gifts can look valuable, and anything that looks valuable attracts fraud. This is the part to read carefully.
Some people buy and sell collectible gifts hoping they will be worth more later. There is no guarantee of that. Prices on secondary markets can fall sharply or disappear. We do not give price information, and nothing here suggests that any gift is a good purchase.
A common scam is a trade where the other person asks you to send your gift first, or to use a "middleman" they choose. The middleman is often the same scammer on another account. Once you transfer, the item is gone.
Scammers build Mini Apps and websites that look like gift marketplaces. They ask you to connect a wallet or log in with your Telegram code. Never enter a login code anywhere except the official Telegram app, and be very careful about what a wallet connection allows. Read never share your Telegram login code.
Messages saying you won a gift and need to pay a fee or "verify" your account to claim it are scams. Real gifts arrive in the chat; you do not pay someone to receive them.
Some scammers copy the name and photo of a known collector or admin. Check the username itself, not just the display name, and be wary of anyone who messages you first.
Gifts are paid for with Telegram Stars, Telegram's in-app currency. Prices vary by design and are shown in the app before you confirm.
Depending on the gift and Telegram's current rules, a recipient may be able to convert some regular gifts into Stars. Check the options shown on the gift in the app.
A regular gift is one of many identical copies. A collectible gift has been upgraded into a unique item with its own traits and number, and can usually be transferred.
Some collectible gifts can be moved to the TON blockchain, where they behave like other blockchain collectibles. Before that, they live inside Telegram.
We cannot recommend it, and this is not investment advice. Resale value is uncertain and scams are common. Only spend what you are comfortable treating as a purchase, not an investment.
Do not send first, do not use a middleman they suggest, and never share login codes or recovery phrases. If in doubt, walk away. Our guide to crypto scams on Telegram lists the common tricks.
Telegram Gifts are digital items bought with Stars and sent to other users. Some are limited, and some can be upgraded into unique collectible gifts that can be transferred or moved to TON. They are a pleasant way to show appreciation, but the collectible side attracts speculation and fraud. Buy only in the official app, never send first in a trade and treat any resale value as uncertain. This is general information, not investment, legal or tax advice.
