Bots & Mini AppsTelegram Mini Apps Explained

A Telegram Mini App is a web app that opens inside Telegram instead of in a separate browser. It is launched from a bot, looks and feels like part of Telegram, and can be a shop, a form, a game or a tool. You get a full interface without installing anything else.

This guide explains how Mini Apps work, what they can access, how payments fit in, and how to use them safely.

What a Mini App is

Bots started as chat partners. You typed commands, they answered with text and buttons. That works for simple jobs but gets awkward for anything with many choices, such as browsing products or filling in a long form.

Mini Apps solve that. A bot can open a web page in a panel inside Telegram. That page can have menus, images, lists, forms and animations, just like a website. When you close it, you are back in your chat.

Under the hood a Mini App is built with ordinary web technology. Telegram provides extra connections so the page can match your app's colours, use Telegram's buttons, and receive basic information about who opened it.

How you open a Mini App

There are several ways a Mini App can be launched. Which ones appear depends on how the developer set it up.

  • A menu button next to the text field in a bot's chat.
  • A button under a message sent by a bot.
  • A link that opens the app directly.
  • An app or "Open" button on the bot's profile.
  • From the attachment menu or search, for some apps.

The first time you open a Mini App, Telegram may show a notice about the app and who runs it. Read it. It is your chance to check you are opening what you meant to.

What a Mini App can and cannot see

This is the part most people wonder about. A Mini App runs on the developer's servers, so the developer decides what it does with any information it receives.

What it usually receives

When you open a Mini App, Telegram passes it a small packet of launch information. This typically includes your public profile basics, such as your name, username and a numeric user ID, plus details about how the app was opened. Telegram signs this information so the developer's server can check it really came from Telegram.

That signature is important for developers. It lets a Mini App know who is using it without asking for a password.

What it does not get automatically

  • Your phone number. A Mini App only gets it if you explicitly agree to share it.
  • Your chats and contacts. The app has no access to your conversations.
  • Your Telegram password or login codes. A genuine Mini App never needs them.

Some apps ask for extra permissions, such as sending you messages through the bot or sharing your location. Telegram asks you before granting these. Say no if the request does not make sense for what the app does.

Anything you type goes to the developer

A Mini App is still a website run by someone else. Anything you enter, such as an address, an email or a message, goes to that developer. Treat it with the same care as any website.

Payments inside Mini Apps

Many Mini Apps sell something. How the payment works depends on what is being sold.

Digital goods and Telegram Stars

For digital goods and services inside Telegram, such as premium features, in-game items or access to content, Telegram's rules generally require payment in Telegram Stars. Stars are Telegram's own currency. You buy them in Telegram and spend them in bots and Mini Apps. Our guide Telegram Stars Explained covers the basics.

Physical goods and other payments

For physical products, Mini Apps may use other payment options that Telegram supports. Rules and available methods change over time and vary by region, so check what the app and Telegram show you at checkout.

Before you pay

  1. Confirm the bot and Mini App are the ones you meant to open.
  2. Read what you are buying and the exact price shown in Telegram's payment screen.
  3. Check whether the seller explains refunds.
  4. Only then confirm the payment.

Common types of Mini Apps

Mini Apps are flexible, so they cover many uses. Typical ones include:

  • Shops and catalogues, where you browse and order without leaving Telegram.
  • Booking tools, for appointments, tables or events.
  • Games, from simple puzzles to larger titles.
  • Forms and surveys, for sign-ups, feedback or applications.
  • Directories and search tools, for finding content or services.
  • Wallet and finance tools, which deserve extra caution.

Some Mini Apps reward you for tapping, inviting friends or completing tasks. Be careful with any app that promises earnings. Promises of easy profit are a common pattern in scams.

Using Mini Apps safely

Mini Apps are as safe as the people who run them. Telegram hosts the window, not the business.

  1. Open Mini Apps only from bots you found through a trusted source. See How to Find a Telegram Bot Safely.
  2. Check the bot's exact username before launching its app.
  3. Never type your Telegram login code, two-step verification password or a crypto wallet recovery phrase into a Mini App.
  4. Refuse permission requests that do not fit the app's purpose.
  5. Be wary of apps that push you to deposit money or invite friends to unlock earnings.
  6. If something feels wrong, close the app and report the bot in Telegram.

For channel owners and creators

Mini Apps can be useful if you run a channel or community. A bot linked to your channel can offer a shop, a sign-up form or a member area. Because Telegram passes signed launch information, a Mini App can recognise returning users without a separate login.

You do not need a Mini App to run a good channel. Many successful channels use nothing more than posts, comments and the occasional poll. Consider one when a chat interface genuinely gets in the way.

If your main goal is growing the channel itself, focus on good posts first and add tools later.

Common mistakes

  • Treating a Mini App as part of Telegram. It is run by an independent developer. Telegram only provides the window.
  • Entering login codes or wallet phrases. No legitimate Mini App needs your Telegram login code, password or wallet recovery phrase.
  • Accepting every permission prompt. Read what is requested and decline anything unnecessary.
  • Believing "tap to earn" promises. Treat any promise of easy income with suspicion.
  • Opening apps from forwarded links. Find the bot yourself and check its username first.
  • Paying without reading the checkout screen. Check the item and price in Telegram's payment window before confirming.

FAQ

Do I need to install anything to use a Mini App?

No. Mini Apps open inside the Telegram app you already have. They run like web pages, so there is nothing extra to install.

Can a Mini App see my phone number?

Not automatically. It only receives your phone number if you agree to share it when asked.

Are Mini Apps made by Telegram?

Most are made by independent developers. A few official tools exist, but the majority are third-party apps launched through bots.

Why do some Mini Apps only accept Stars?

Telegram's rules generally require digital goods and services sold inside Telegram to be paid in Stars. Check Telegram's current terms for details.

Can I close a Mini App without losing anything?

Usually yes, but it depends on the app. Some save your progress on their servers, others do not. If in doubt, finish what you are doing first.

Is a Mini App safer than a website?

Not inherently. Telegram's signed launch information helps developers know who you are, but the app is still run by its developer. Use the same caution you would with any website.

Summary

Telegram Mini Apps are web apps that open inside Telegram through bots. They give developers a full interface for shops, forms, games and tools. They receive basic profile information that Telegram signs, but not your phone number, chats or passwords unless you share them. Digital purchases generally use Telegram Stars. Open Mini Apps only from bots you trust, decline unnecessary permissions, and never enter login codes or wallet phrases. To discover bots and channels worth trying, browse our categories.
