Why Telegram Downloads Are Slow and How to Speed Them Up

Find out why Telegram files and videos download slowly, how to tell which cause you have, and the fixes for Android, iPhone, Desktop and Web.

Getting StartedWhy Telegram Downloads Are Slow and How to Speed Them Up

Telegram downloads are usually slow for one of a few reasons: your own connection, a VPN or proxy in the way, your phone limiting the app in the background, settings inside Telegram, or a speed limit that applies to free accounts on some downloads. The fix depends on which one you have, so the quickest route is to test first, then change one thing at a time.

This guide explains how Telegram delivers files, how to recognise each cause, and step-by-step fixes for Android, iPhone, Telegram Desktop and Telegram Web. It ends with a checklist you can run in a few minutes.

How Telegram downloads work

Understanding the path a file takes makes the fixes make sense.

When someone posts a file, Telegram stores it on its servers. Telegram runs servers in more than one region, and a file lives in a particular data centre. When you tap download, your app requests the file in pieces and puts them back together on your device.

Several things decide the speed:

  • Your connection to the internet. Wi-Fi quality, mobile signal, router load and your provider all matter.
  • The route to Telegram's servers. A VPN, proxy or network filter can make the route much longer or slower.
  • How many pieces your app requests at once. Apps and account types differ in how hard they push.
  • What else is using your connection. Other downloads, streaming and automatic media downloads inside Telegram compete for the same bandwidth.
  • Your device. Storage speed, free space and battery-saving rules on phones affect how quickly pieces are written and whether the app keeps working in the background.

A slow download is almost always one of these links being weaker than the rest. The sections below go through each one.

Slow, stuck or failing: tell them apart

Three symptoms look similar but point to different causes. Identify yours before working through the fixes.

The download moves, but slowly

Progress grows steadily, just not fast. This is a bandwidth problem: your connection, a tunnel, a free-account limit or competing downloads. Causes 1, 2, 3, 5 and 9 are the likely ones.

The download sits at zero or never starts

The progress circle spins but nothing arrives. That usually means the app has no working connection to Telegram at all. Look at the top of the chat list: if it says "Connecting" or "Waiting for network", fix the connection first, because no download setting will help until it is solved. A dead proxy is the classic cause.

The download starts, then stops at the same point

Progress reaches a percentage and freezes, or the download fails and restarts. This points to the device: storage running out, the system closing the app in the background, or the screen locking on iPhone. Causes 4 and 6 are where to look. Note the percentage; if it always stops at the same place on different networks, storage is the most likely reason.

Only some files are affected

If photos and small files arrive instantly while large videos crawl, the free-account limit on large files or a busy connection is the likely cause. If one particular file is slow for everyone in a chat, the issue is probably on Telegram's side and passes with time.

Media is blurry or low quality, not slow

Sometimes "slow" really means a video shows a low-quality preview first. Telegram may show a quick low-resolution version while the full file loads. Waiting a few seconds, or choosing a higher quality in the video player where offered, solves it. This is normal behaviour rather than a fault.

Before you start: a two-minute diagnosis

Run these checks first. They tell you where to look.

  1. Try another app. Open a video on a streaming site or run a speed test in your browser. If everything is slow, the problem is your connection, not Telegram.
  2. Try another file. Download a different large file from a different channel. If only one file is slow, the problem may be that file's location or popularity, not your setup.
  3. Try another network. Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data or the other way round. A large difference points to your network.
  4. Try another device. Download the same file in Telegram Desktop or on another phone. If it is fast there, the problem is on the first device.
  5. Turn off VPN or proxy briefly. If speed jumps, the tunnel is the bottleneck.

Write down what you find. Most people discover the cause within these five checks.

Cause 1: Your own internet connection

How to recognise it

Everything feels slow, not only Telegram. Speed tests show low numbers, or numbers that change wildly. Downloads are fine in one room and poor in another.

How to fix it

  1. Move closer to your Wi-Fi router, or remove obstacles such as walls and metal cabinets between you.
  2. Restart the router: switch it off, wait half a minute, switch it on.
  3. If your router offers two bands, try the other one. The faster band is often shorter-range.
  4. Pause other heavy users of the connection, such as game updates, cloud backups or 4K streaming.
  5. On mobile data, check whether you have used up a fast-data allowance. Many plans slow down after a limit.

If it does not work

Contact your provider, or test at a different location such as a friend's home or a café. If Telegram is fast elsewhere, your home connection is the limit.

Cause 2: A VPN, proxy or filter on the route

How to recognise it

Speed changes dramatically when you turn a VPN off. Or you have a proxy configured inside Telegram's own settings, perhaps from years ago, and forgot about it. Downloads start, stall, and resume.

How to fix it

  1. Turn off any VPN app and test again.
  2. In Telegram, open Settings, then Data and Storage, and look for proxy settings. Check whether a proxy is enabled.
  3. If you do not need the proxy, switch it off.
  4. If you need a VPN or proxy, for example because Telegram is restricted where you are, try a server closer to you or a different provider.
  5. On work, school or hotel networks, filters may inspect or slow traffic. Try mobile data to confirm.

Why this happens

Every tunnel adds distance and a bottleneck. Free public proxies in particular are shared by many people and change often. A proxy that worked well last month may now be overloaded. Telegram supports proxies inside the app, which is helpful where it is blocked, but it means a forgotten proxy can silently slow everything. Our guide to why Telegram gets stuck on "Connecting" covers proxy problems in more depth.

If it does not work

If you cannot turn the tunnel off, compare two or three servers and stick with the fastest. Avoid proxy lists from unknown channels; a proxy operator can see your connection metadata and some are run to harvest data.

Cause 3: Telegram's speed limit for free accounts

How to recognise it

Your connection is fast, other apps download quickly, there is no VPN, yet large Telegram files crawl at a fairly steady pace. Friends with Telegram Premium report faster downloads of the same file.

What is going on

Telegram lists faster downloads as one of the benefits of Telegram Premium. In practice, free accounts can see slower speeds on large files at times, while Premium accounts are not limited in the same way. Telegram does not publish a fixed number for the free speed, and it can change, so treat any number you read online with caution. Some apps show a small notice suggesting Premium when a download is being limited.

Options

  1. Accept the speed for occasional files. For a one-off download, waiting may be the easiest choice.
  2. Download on Wi-Fi when you are not using the device. Overnight on a charger often works well.
  3. Consider Premium if you download large files often. Read Telegram Premium vs free to see whether the rest of the package is worth it for you.
  4. Be wary of "unlimited speed" mods. Unofficial apps that promise to bypass limits may break Telegram's terms or carry malware. The guide to third-party Telegram clients explains the risks.

If it does not work

If you have Premium and downloads are still slow, the limit is not the cause. Go back to the network and device sections.

Cause 4: Battery saving and background limits on your phone

How to recognise it

Downloads are fast while the app is open on screen but stop or slow down when you switch apps or lock the phone. Large files never seem to finish unless you watch them.

Fix on Android

  1. Open your phone's Settings, then Apps, then Telegram.
  2. Open Battery (the name varies by phone maker).
  3. Set battery use to unrestricted or "don't optimise".
  4. Check that background data is allowed under the app's mobile data settings.
  5. If your phone has a battery saver or power saving mode switched on, turn it off while downloading.

Some phone makers are aggressive about closing apps. If yours has a "protected apps" or "auto-launch" list, add Telegram to it.

Fix on iPhone

  1. Open the iPhone Settings app, then Telegram, and make sure Background App Refresh is on.
  2. Turn off Low Power Mode while downloading.
  3. Check that Telegram is allowed to use mobile data in Settings, then Mobile Data (or Cellular).

iOS gives apps limited time in the background. Long downloads may pause when Telegram is not on screen for a while. Keeping the app open with the screen on is the most reliable way to finish a large file on iPhone.

Telegram's own power saving

Telegram has its own power saving or battery settings in some versions, which reduce animations and background activity. If you enabled these, check whether they affect downloads on your version, and switch them off while downloading if needed.

If it does not work

Use Telegram Desktop for large files. Computers do not suspend apps the way phones do.

Cause 5: Automatic media downloads eating your bandwidth

How to recognise it

You join busy groups or channels, and Telegram is constantly downloading photos, videos and voice messages in the background. The file you actually want competes with dozens of others.

How to fix it

  1. Open Settings, then Data and Storage.
  2. Find automatic media download settings for mobile data, Wi-Fi and roaming.
  3. Turn off automatic download for videos and files, or lower the size limit.
  4. Keep photos on if you like; they are usually small.

Why this helps

Every automatic download uses the same connection. Turning them off frees bandwidth for files you choose, and it also saves storage and mobile data.

If it does not work

Pause or cancel other downloads in progress. In many versions, a downloads list shows everything being fetched; cancel what you do not need.

Cause 6: Storage that is full or slow

How to recognise it

Downloads stop at a percentage and fail, or your phone warns about low storage. On Android, downloads saved to a memory card are slower than those saved to internal storage. On a computer, downloads to a network drive or an old external disk are slow.

How to fix it

  1. Free up space. Telegram's cache can grow very large. Our guide on how to clear Telegram cache explains what is safe to delete.
  2. In Data and Storage, use storage usage settings to set a cache limit or keep-media period so Telegram cleans up old media automatically.
  3. On Android, if you chose a memory card as the storage location, try internal storage.
  4. On Desktop, set the download folder to a fast local drive.

If it does not work

Restart the device after freeing space. Some systems only release space fully after a restart.

Cause 7: An outdated or misbehaving app

How to recognise it

Downloads used to be fine and became slow without anything else changing, or the app crashes or freezes while downloading.

How to fix it

  1. Update Telegram from your app store or Telegram's website.
  2. Restart the device.
  3. If the problem continues, log out and back in. Make sure you know your two-step verification password first; see how to set up two-step verification.
  4. As a last step, reinstall the app. Your cloud chats and files stay on Telegram's servers, but secret chats are stored on the device and will be lost.

If it does not work

Try a different official app. Telegram Desktop and the official mobile apps are separate code, so a bug in one rarely affects the others.

Cause 8: The file itself, or a Telegram-side issue

How to recognise it

Only one file is slow, while others from different chats download quickly. Or many people in a group report the same problem at the same time.

What is going on

Files are stored in particular locations, and very popular files or busy times can affect speed. Occasionally Telegram has a partial outage that affects some regions or features.

What to do

  1. Wait and try later. Telegram-side slowdowns usually clear on their own.
  2. Ask in the chat whether others see the same thing.
  3. Try downloading on another device or network to rule out your setup.

There is little you can change on your side in this case, and you do not need to.

Cause 9: Data saver and roaming rules

How to recognise it

Downloads are fine on Wi-Fi but stall or never start on mobile data, or they stop as soon as you travel abroad. Other apps may also behave oddly on mobile data.

What is going on

Both your phone and Telegram have rules for mobile data. Android's Data Saver blocks background data for most apps unless you exempt them. iPhone has a Low Data Mode that tells apps to cut back on network use. Telegram itself keeps separate automatic download settings for Wi-Fi, mobile data and roaming, and roaming is often the most restrictive by default.

Fixing it on Android

  1. Open your phone's Settings and search for Data Saver.
  2. If it is on, either turn it off or add Telegram to the list of apps allowed unrestricted data.
  3. In Telegram, open Data and Storage and check the mobile data and roaming download settings.

Fixing it on iPhone

  1. Open Settings, then Mobile Data (or Cellular), then Mobile Data Options.
  2. Turn off Low Data Mode if you want full speed.
  3. For Wi-Fi, Low Data Mode is a per-network setting: open Wi-Fi, tap the info button next to your network, and check it there.

If the fix does not help

Check your mobile plan. Roaming data is often slowed or capped by the provider, and that is outside Telegram's control.

Cause 10: Your network or region slowing Telegram

How to recognise it

Your connection is fast for everything else, Telegram is slow on every device on that network, and it speeds up noticeably on a different network or through a VPN. People near you on the same provider report the same thing.

What is going on

Some providers and some countries restrict or slow Telegram traffic. Workplaces and schools may also limit messaging apps on their networks. In this case nothing inside the app is wrong.

What you can do

  1. Confirm the pattern by testing on a different provider, such as mobile data versus home broadband.
  2. If it is a workplace or school network, ask the administrator, or use your own mobile data.
  3. If Telegram is restricted where you live, Telegram's built-in proxy support exists for this situation. Check what is legal where you are before using a proxy or VPN.

If nothing changes

Download large files when you are on a different network, for example at home rather than at work.

Slow uploads have similar causes, plus one more

If sending files is the slow part, most of this guide still applies: network, VPN, battery limits and outdated apps affect uploads in the same way. One extra factor matters a lot.

Many home connections have much less upload capacity than download capacity. A file that downloads in a minute can take far longer to send from the same connection. A speed test shows both numbers, so check the upload figure before blaming Telegram.

Tips for faster uploads:

  1. Send videos compressed when quality is not critical. Telegram usually offers a compressed option when you send a video normally, and a "send as file" option that keeps the original. Compressed videos are smaller and upload faster.
  2. Pause cloud backup apps, which compete for upload bandwidth.
  3. Upload large files from a computer on a wired connection where possible.
  4. Keep the phone screen on and the app open until the upload finishes.

Channel owners who regularly post long videos often prepare them on a computer and upload from Telegram Desktop, then schedule the post. That avoids a phone pausing an upload half-way.

Planning a large download

For files you need offline, a little planning saves a lot of waiting.

  1. Check free storage first, with room to spare. A file needs its own size in free space, and the phone needs space to keep working.
  2. Connect to a stable Wi-Fi network and a charger.
  3. Turn off battery saver, Low Power Mode and Data Saver for the duration.
  4. Cancel automatic downloads that are running in other chats.
  5. Start the download, then leave the app open with the screen on (on iPhone especially).
  6. Once finished, save the file to your device's own storage from the message menu if you want it outside Telegram, and consider clearing it from Telegram's cache afterwards.

What to do next if nothing works

If you have worked through every cause and downloads are still slow:

  1. Note what you tested: networks, devices, VPN on and off, app version.
  2. Check whether the problem is limited to one account by trying another account on the same device, if you have one.
  3. Use Telegram's in-app support option, found in the app's settings, and describe exactly what you tested. A clear report gets a more useful answer than "downloads are slow".
  4. In the meantime, use the device and network combination that worked best in your tests.

Platform-specific tips

Telegram Desktop

Telegram Desktop is often the best place for large downloads. It keeps running, it writes to fast disks, and it is not subject to phone battery rules.

  1. In Settings, open Advanced and check the download path.
  2. Choose whether Telegram should ask where to save each file.
  3. Check the connection type in Advanced. If a proxy is set there, it applies to Desktop only, separately from your phone.
  4. Keep the computer awake. Sleep mode pauses downloads; adjust your power settings while a large file downloads.

Antivirus software that scans every file as it is written can slow downloads. If you trust the source, check whether your antivirus offers a lighter scanning mode, but do not turn protection off for files from unknown channels.

Telegram Web

Telegram Web runs in your browser, so the browser's own limits apply. Large downloads can be slower and less reliable than in the apps.

  1. Keep the browser tab active.
  2. Close other heavy tabs.
  3. Disable browser extensions that inspect traffic, at least as a test.
  4. For big files, switch to the Desktop app.

Read Telegram Desktop vs Web vs mobile for a fuller comparison.

Android

Android gives the most control. Check unrestricted battery use, background data, storage location and automatic downloads, as covered above.

iPhone

On iPhone, the main limit is background time. Keep Telegram open for big files, connect to power, and turn off Low Power Mode.

Streaming instead of downloading

For videos, you often do not need a full download. Telegram can play many videos while they load, so you can start watching after a short buffer. If playback stutters, lower the quality in the player if your version offers it, or let a part of the video load first.

If videos will not play at all rather than playing slowly, that is a different problem. See Telegram videos not playing.

Worked example: finding the cause step by step

Example only. Priya downloads a large lecture recording from a course channel. It crawls, while her laptop at home seems fine.

  1. She runs a speed test on her phone. It is fast. So her connection is not the problem.
  2. She tries another large file from a different channel. Also slow on the phone.
  3. She opens the same file on her laptop on the same Wi-Fi. It downloads quickly.
  4. She checks the phone's Telegram settings and finds a proxy enabled from a trip abroad last year.
  5. She switches the proxy off. The download speeds up immediately.

The pattern "fast on the laptop, slow on the phone, same network" pointed to a setting on the phone. Without the step-by-step checks, she might have blamed her internet provider.

Quick checklist

Run through this list when downloads are slow:

  • Is everything slow, or only Telegram?
  • Is a VPN or a Telegram proxy turned on?
  • Is the phone in low power or battery saver mode?
  • Is Data Saver or Low Data Mode limiting Telegram?
  • Is Telegram allowed to run and use data in the background?
  • Are automatic media downloads eating bandwidth?
  • Is storage nearly full, or is the download going to a slow location?
  • Is the app up to date?
  • Does the same file download quickly on another device?
  • Are other people reporting problems at the same time?

Common mistakes

  • Changing many settings at once. If speed improves, you will not know which change helped. Change one thing, test, then move on.
  • Installing "speed booster" apps. These rarely help and can be malware. Official settings and your network are where speed comes from.
  • Forgetting old proxies. A proxy set up long ago is a frequent hidden cause.
  • Clearing cache in the middle of a download. This can delete partially downloaded data. Let the download finish or cancel it first.
  • Downloading huge files on iPhone with the screen off. iOS will likely pause it. Keep the app open or use a computer.
  • Assuming Premium fixes everything. It removes one limit, not a slow network or a battery-saving rule.

FAQ

Does Telegram limit download speed for free users?

Telegram lists faster downloads as a Premium benefit, and free accounts can see slower speeds on some large files. Telegram does not publish a fixed figure, so check Telegram's Premium page for the current description.

Why is Telegram fast on my computer but slow on my phone?

Usually a phone setting: battery optimisation, a forgotten proxy, background limits or low storage. Compare the settings on both devices.

Will a VPN make Telegram downloads faster?

Usually not. A VPN adds a detour. It can help only when your network or provider is slowing Telegram specifically. Test with and without.

Can I download several files at once to save time?

You can, but they share the same bandwidth. For a single important file, pause the others.

Why does my download restart from zero?

Clearing cache, running out of storage, or the app being closed by the system can lose partial data. Free up space and keep the app running.

Where do downloaded files go?

On Desktop, to the folder set in Advanced settings. On phones, Telegram keeps them in its own storage, and you can save individual files to your gallery or files app from the message menu.

Summary

Slow Telegram downloads come from a weak link: your connection, a VPN or proxy, phone battery and data saver limits, automatic downloads competing for bandwidth, full or slow storage, an outdated app, a free-account speed limit on large files, or a temporary Telegram issue. Diagnose first by comparing apps, networks and devices, then fix one cause at a time. For very large files, Telegram Desktop on a fast connection is usually the most reliable option.
