How to Use Slow Mode and Member Restrictions on Telegram

How slow mode, group-wide permissions and individual restrictions work in Telegram groups, when to use each one, and how to avoid frustrating members.

How to Use Slow Mode and Member Restrictions on Telegram

Slow mode limits how often each member of a Telegram group can send a message, while member restrictions control what members are allowed to post. Admins set both in the group's settings: slow mode and default permissions apply to everyone, and individual restrictions apply to one person. Used together, they calm busy chats and stop spam without banning anyone.

This guide explains each tool, when it helps, and how to use it without driving real members away.

The three tools at a glance

Telegram gives group admins three related controls:

  • Slow mode. Each member must wait a set time between messages. Admins are not affected.
  • Group-wide permissions. You decide what all ordinary members can do, such as sending media, links, stickers or polls.
  • Individual restrictions. You limit what one specific member can do, for a set time or until you lift it.

These controls live in the group's settings, usually in a permissions section. The exact layout varies between apps and versions, so look around if you do not see them right away.

Channels do not have these tools in the same way, because only admins post in a channel. If you have a channel with a linked discussion group, these settings apply to the group.

Slow mode

What it does

When slow mode is on, every member who sends a message must wait before sending the next one. You choose the waiting time from a list of options. A member who tries to post too soon sees that they need to wait.

Slow mode does not stop anyone from reading or replying. It only spaces out messages from each person.

When to use it

Slow mode is useful when:

  • A big announcement or event makes the chat explode with short replies.
  • A few members dominate the conversation by posting many messages in a row.
  • Spam accounts try to flood the chat.
  • The group is meant for thoughtful questions and answers rather than fast chat.

It is less useful in small, friendly groups where quick back-and-forth is the point. There it mostly gets in the way.

How to turn it on

  1. Open the group as an admin with the right to change permissions.
  2. Go to the group's settings and find the permissions section.
  3. Look for slow mode and choose a waiting time.
  4. Save, and tell members why you turned it on.

To turn it off, go back to the same place and switch it off. Changing it does not delete any messages.

Choosing the right interval

Start with a short interval and see how the chat feels. If the group is still flooded, make it longer. If people complain that they cannot finish a thought, make it shorter or switch it off.

A good habit is to use slow mode temporarily. Turn it on during busy moments and off again afterwards.

Group-wide permissions

What you can control

Default permissions decide what ordinary members can do. Depending on your app version, options usually include:

  • Sending text messages.
  • Sending media, such as photos, videos, files, voice messages and stickers.
  • Sending links.
  • Creating polls.
  • Adding new members.
  • Pinning messages.
  • Changing the group's info.
  • Creating topics, if topics are on.

In recent versions, some media types can be allowed or blocked separately. Check what your app shows.

How to choose permissions

Think about what your group is for, then allow only what supports it.

  1. List the types of content members need to share for the group to work.
  2. Allow those.
  3. Block things that are rarely useful and often abused, such as links in a group that does not need them.
  4. Leave pinning and changing group info to admins in almost every case.
  5. Review after a few weeks and adjust.

For example, a group for sharing photography might allow photos but block links and stickers. A support group for an app might allow screenshots and text but block voice messages.

Read-only groups

If you block sending messages for all members, the group becomes read-only for them, much like a channel. This can be useful briefly, for example during a raid by spam accounts. For long-term one-way posting, a channel is usually the better tool. See Telegram channel vs group.

Individual restrictions

What a restriction is

Restricting a member limits what that person can do while they stay in the group. You can usually choose which permissions to remove and for how long. When the time ends, their normal permissions come back automatically.

This is often called a mute when you block someone from sending messages.

When to restrict instead of ban

Restrictions suit situations where someone needs a pause rather than removal:

  • A heated argument that needs to cool down.
  • A first or second rule break.
  • A newcomer who keeps posting links before reading the rules.
  • An account you are unsure about while you check it.

Banning removes the person and stops them rejoining through normal links. Save it for spam, scams and serious or repeated problems. Our guide on how to handle conflicts and bans in a Telegram group covers this choice in more detail.

How to restrict a member

  1. Find the member in the group's member list, or tap their name on a message.
  2. Choose the option to restrict them.
  3. Pick which permissions to remove, such as sending messages or media.
  4. Choose how long the restriction lasts.
  5. Save, and if appropriate, tell them privately or in a short public note which rule they broke.

You can also give individual members exceptions, but be careful. Exceptions are easy to forget and can look unfair to others.

Using bots alongside built-in tools

Built-in tools cover most needs. Moderation bots can add things like automatic restrictions for new members, word filters or verification. If you use one:

  • Choose a bot from a source you trust.
  • Give it only the admin rights it needs.
  • Test it with a spare account.

Read how to stop spam bots in Telegram groups before adding one.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving slow mode on forever "just in case". It can make a friendly group feel unwelcoming.
  • Turning it on without explanation. Members think the app is broken. A short note helps.
  • Allowing everything by default. Every permission you allow is also available to spammers.
  • Letting members pin or change group info. This is rarely needed and easy to abuse.
  • Banning when a mute would do. Removing people for small mistakes shrinks a group and creates resentment.
  • Forgotten exceptions. Special permissions for one person can cause confusion later. Review them.

FAQ

Does slow mode apply to admins?

No. Admins can post freely while slow mode is on, which lets them make announcements and moderate.

Can members see who has been restricted?

A restricted member sees that they cannot post. Other members usually do not get a notice unless an admin posts one. Behaviour can vary between app versions.

How long can I restrict someone for?

You can usually choose a time period or leave it with no end date. Check the options in your app when you set the restriction.

Can I use slow mode in a channel?

Channels are one-way, so slow mode is a group feature. If your channel has a linked discussion group, you can use slow mode there.

Will slow mode stop spam bots?

It limits how fast any one account can post, which slows flooding. It does not stop a single spam message. Combine it with other tools such as join requests and link restrictions.

Summary

Slow mode spaces out messages, group-wide permissions decide what everyone can post, and individual restrictions limit one person for a time. Use slow mode during busy moments, allow only the content your group needs, and restrict before you ban for small problems. Explain changes to members and review your settings regularly.
