Telegram or Discord for your community? Compare structure, moderation, voice, discovery, mobile use and growth, and learn when each one fits best.
Telegram suits communities that live mostly on phones, want fast announcements, and like a simple chat with optional topics. Discord suits communities that hang out for long sessions, want many organised rooms, and use voice a lot. Both can work well, and plenty of projects use one for announcements and the other for deep discussion.
This guide compares them on the points that matter when you are building a community, without assuming one is always better.
Telegram gives you two main building blocks. A channel is a one-way broadcast with unlimited subscribers. A group is a shared chat where members talk, with up to 200,000 members. Groups can turn on topics, which split one group into separate threads, such as "Help", "Off-topic" and "Announcements". A channel can also link a discussion group so each post gets comments.
Our guide on Telegram channel vs group explains the difference in more detail.
Discord is built around servers. A server holds many text and voice channels, grouped into categories, with roles that control who can see and do what. Members usually join one server and move between its rooms. Discord changes its features regularly, so check its own help pages for current options.
Some communities use a Telegram channel for announcements and Discord for deep discussion, or the reverse. This works if each place has a clear purpose. Tell members what goes where, and do not post the same thing in both.
If you build on Telegram, you can submit your channel or group to TGDirectory for free. Every submission is reviewed by a person before it appears, and illegal, pornographic and scam listings are not accepted. A listing gives readers another way to find you through categories.
Telegram groups can turn on topics, which act like separate threads inside one group. It is simpler than Discord's room and role system, but it covers many of the same needs.
Both support voice. Telegram's voice chats suit scheduled talks and live streams. Discord's always-open voice rooms suit drop-in hanging out. Pick based on how your members like to talk.
A Telegram group can hold up to 200,000 members. A channel has no subscriber limit, so large audiences often use a channel plus a linked group.
A phone number is used to create a Telegram account, but members can hide it from others using privacy settings and talk through usernames instead.
There is no direct transfer. Announce the move, share your Telegram link, give people time, and keep the old space open briefly so nobody is left behind.
Telegram is strong for mobile-first communities, fast announcements and public discovery. Discord is strong for long sessions, many rooms and drop-in voice. Choose based on how your members already behave, start in one place, and set up rules and moderation early. Check each platform's current features before planning around them.
