How to Back Up a Telegram Channel

Protect your Telegram channel against bans, hacks and mistakes: export posts and media with Telegram Desktop, back up settings, secure ownership and plan a restore.

Running a ChannelHow to Back Up a Telegram Channel

To back up a Telegram channel, export its posts and media with Telegram Desktop's chat export, save a record of your settings and admin list, and secure ownership with two-step verification and a second trusted admin. Telegram stores your channel in its cloud, but that does not protect you from a lost account, a ban, a rogue admin or your own accidental deletion. A backup is what lets you rebuild.

This guide explains what can go wrong, what a complete backup includes, how to export step by step, how often to do it, and what restoring really looks like.

Why a cloud app still needs a backup

Telegram keeps channel messages on its servers, so a broken phone does not lose your posts. That is why many admins assume they are safe. The cloud protects you against device problems. It does not protect you against problems with the channel or the account itself.

Here are the real risks, roughly from most to least common:

  • Losing the owner account. A phone number change without moving the account, a forgotten two-step password, or an account deleted by Telegram's inactivity setting can all cut you off.
  • A hacked account. If someone takes over the owner account, they can delete the channel, remove admins or change its content. See how to recover a hacked Telegram account.
  • A rogue or careless admin. An admin with delete rights can remove posts. An admin with the right to add admins can hand those rights to others.
  • Your own mistake. Deleting the wrong post, clearing history, or deleting the channel thinking you were leaving it.
  • A ban or restriction. Telegram can block channels that break its terms. If that happens, access to the content may be gone. See Telegram channel banned.
  • Losing the username. If you change the username, someone else may claim the old one, breaking every link you have shared.

A backup does not stop any of these. It turns a disaster into an inconvenience.

What a complete backup includes

Most people think only of posts. A useful backup has four parts.

1. Content

  • Text of every post, with dates.
  • Photos, videos, files, voice messages and audio.
  • Polls and their results, if they matter to you.
  • Pinned posts, so you know what was important.

2. Channel identity

  • The channel name and username.
  • The description.
  • The profile photo in full quality.
  • Your invite links, if the channel is private, and where you shared them.
  • Linked discussion group details.

3. People and access

  • The list of admins, with what each one is allowed to do.
  • Your own contact details for each admin outside Telegram, in case you need to reach them if the channel goes.
  • Bots added as admins and what they do.

4. Business records

  • Agreements with advertisers and sponsors.
  • Payment records and invoices.
  • Your posting calendar and any planning documents.

Parts 2, 3 and 4 do not come out of any export tool. You keep them yourself, in a document or a simple spreadsheet you update when something changes.

Before you start

  1. Install Telegram Desktop on a Windows, macOS or Linux computer. The full export tool lives in the desktop app, not in the mobile apps or Telegram Web.
  2. Log in with an account that is in the channel. An admin account is best. A subscriber can also export a public channel's visible posts, but an admin export is the complete record.
  3. Check your free disk space. A channel with lots of video can be very large. If you are short of space, plan to export media in parts.
  4. Choose a storage place. An external drive, a second computer or an encrypted cloud folder. Not only the same laptop.
  5. Keep your phone near you. For some data exports, Telegram may ask you to confirm on another logged-in device, and may make you wait before the export is allowed. This is a security measure against someone who has stolen your session.

How to export a channel with Telegram Desktop

Telegram Desktop can export a single chat, including a channel, to files on your computer. The exact wording of menus can change between versions, so look for the closest match if a label differs.

  1. Open Telegram Desktop and click the channel in your chat list.
  2. Open the channel menu. Click the three-dot menu at the top right of the chat.
  3. Choose "Export chat history". If you do not see it, update Telegram Desktop to the latest version.
  4. Choose what to include. You can tick photos, videos, voice and video messages, stickers, GIFs and files. Untick types you do not need to save space.
  5. Set a size limit for files. There is an option to skip files over a chosen size. For a complete backup, raise the limit to the maximum. For a quick text backup, set it low.
  6. Pick the format. Telegram offers a human-readable HTML format, which you can open in a browser and browse like the channel, and a machine-readable JSON format, which is better for scripts and moving data elsewhere. If in doubt, choose HTML. Advanced users often export both.
  7. Choose the date range. You can export everything or only a period. For your first backup, export everything.
  8. Choose the folder where the export will be saved.
  9. Start the export and leave the app open until it finishes. Large channels can take a long time.
  10. Check the result. Open the export folder and the main HTML file in a browser. Scroll to the start and the end. Open a few photos and videos to make sure they saved.

For a deeper walk-through of the export screen and its options, see how to export Telegram chat history.

What the export contains

An HTML export gives you web pages with your posts in order, plus folders for photos, videos and files. You can open it on any computer without Telegram. A JSON export gives a structured file with each message, its date, text and references to media files.

What it usually does not contain

  • The full list of subscribers. Channels are broadcast tools, and you should not expect a subscriber export.
  • Telegram's channel statistics. Save screenshots or notes of statistics you care about.
  • Settings such as admin permissions, slow mode or reaction settings. Record these yourself.
  • Comments from the linked discussion group. Export the discussion group separately if you need it.

HTML or JSON: which to choose

The format question confuses many admins, so here is what each one is good for in practice.

HTML: for people

An HTML export looks like a simple version of the channel in your web browser. Each page holds a batch of messages in order, with photos shown inline and links to videos and files. It is the right choice if you want to:

  • Browse old posts the way you would in Telegram.
  • Show a past post to someone, such as an advertiser or a lawyer.
  • Use your browser's find function to search for a word across a page.

Its weakness is that it is hard to process automatically. Moving hundreds of posts from HTML into another system means a lot of copying and pasting.

JSON: for tools

A JSON export is one structured text file listing each message with fields such as its date, its text and the path to any attached media. It is not pleasant to read by eye, but a short script or a data tool can:

  • Count your posts per month.
  • Find every post that mentions a product.
  • Rebuild your archive on a website or blog.
  • Feed a bot that reposts selected content into a new channel after a loss.

If you are not technical, export HTML. If you might ever want to move your content, export JSON too. Some versions of Telegram Desktop let you pick both formats in one run, which saves exporting the media twice. If yours does not, run two exports.

Desktop apps and platforms

The export tool described here is part of Telegram Desktop, the official app for Windows, macOS and Linux.

  • Windows and Linux: install Telegram Desktop from Telegram's official site or your system's trusted app store.
  • macOS: there is more than one official Telegram app for Mac. If you cannot find "Export chat history" in the app you use, install Telegram Desktop as well and log in there for exports.
  • Android and iPhone: no full export. Use a computer.
  • Telegram Web: no full export. Use a computer with the desktop app.

You can log in to Telegram Desktop alongside your phone. Your session list in settings will show the new device. If you only use the desktop app for backups, you can log it out afterwards, which reduces the number of places your account is open.

When the export does not work

Exports usually run smoothly, but a few problems come up often. Each has a clear cause.

The export option is missing

How to recognise it: the chat menu has no export entry.

  1. Update Telegram Desktop to the latest version.
  2. Make sure you are using Telegram Desktop and not another app.
  3. Check whether the channel has restricted saving content turned on. Telegram's content protection can block exports from protected chats for non-owners. If you are an admin, the owner can temporarily switch it off for the export and switch it back on afterwards. See restricting saving content.

If it is still missing, try exporting from a different admin account.

Telegram asks you to wait

How to recognise it: a message says the export is allowed only after a delay, or asks you to confirm from another device.

This is a security check. It exists so that someone who has just stolen your session cannot download your whole history at once. Confirm on your phone if asked, and wait out the delay. There is no way around it, and that is deliberate.

Videos or files are missing

How to recognise it: posts in the export say a file was not downloaded or show only a placeholder.

  1. Check the size limit you set. Files larger than the limit are skipped.
  2. Run a new export for the same date range with only media selected and the size limit raised.
  3. Check free disk space. A full disk can stop downloads part-way.

The export stops part-way

How to recognise it: the progress bar stalls or the app reports an error.

  1. Check your internet connection and disk space.
  2. Restart Telegram Desktop.
  3. Export again with a smaller date range, for example one year at a time.

If one period keeps failing, skip the largest files in that period and export them separately afterwards.

Recovering a post deleted by mistake

If an admin deletes a post by accident, act quickly. Channels and groups have a recent actions log visible to admins, which records actions like deletions and edits for a short period. Depending on your app version, a deleted message may be visible there, so you can copy its text and repost it.

  1. Open the channel's management area in its settings.
  2. Look for the recent actions log.
  3. Find the deletion and copy what you need.

This window is short, so do not rely on it as a backup. It is a safety net for a mistake noticed the same day. For anything older, you need your export.

Exporting the discussion group too

If your channel has a linked discussion group, its comments live in the group, not in the channel. To back them up:

  1. Open the discussion group in Telegram Desktop.
  2. Use the same "Export chat history" option from its menu.
  3. Select the content types and date range.
  4. Save it next to the channel export, in a folder with a matching date.

Think about privacy here. A group export contains other people's messages and names. Store it securely and do not share it.

Building a backup routine

One export is a snapshot. A routine is a backup.

How often

It depends on how much you would lose:

  • Daily posting, valuable archive (paid content, news, reference material): export monthly, plus a quick text-only export every week.
  • Several posts a week: export every month or two.
  • Occasional posts: export every quarter and after any big change.

Always export before risky moments: changing the username, transferring ownership, adding a new admin with wide rights, or a large cleanup of old posts.

Incremental exports

You do not need to export the whole channel each time. Use the date range option to export only the period since your last backup. Name each folder clearly, for example "channel-name 2025-03 to 2025-04". Keep the first full export safe and add the incremental ones beside it.

The 3-2-1 idea

A common rule for backups is three copies, on two kinds of storage, with one kept somewhere else. For a channel that might be: the export on your computer, a copy on an external drive, and a copy in a cloud folder. It sounds excessive until a laptop is stolen.

Keep a settings record

Create a simple document with:

  • Channel name, username and link.
  • Description text.
  • Admin names, usernames and their permissions.
  • Bots and what they do.
  • Linked group name and link.
  • Date of last export.

Update it whenever something changes. It takes minutes and saves hours if you ever have to rebuild. Store it with your exports, not only inside Telegram, because a record kept in Saved Messages disappears along with the account you are trying to protect against losing.

Protecting ownership: the backup most people skip

An export protects content. It does not keep the channel itself in your hands. Securing ownership matters just as much.

Two-step verification

Turn on two-step verification for the owner account and every admin. It adds a password on top of the login code, so a stolen code alone is not enough to take the account. Add a recovery email you can access. See how to set up two-step verification.

A second trusted admin

Always have at least one other trusted admin with enough rights to keep the channel running. If you lose access to your account, they can keep posting and can protect the channel while you recover.

Be careful how much power you give. The right to add new admins is the most dangerous one: someone with it can promote others, and things can get out of hand. Give it only to people you would trust with the channel itself.

Plan for ownership transfer

Telegram allows the owner to transfer ownership to another admin. Telegram adds security conditions before allowing this, such as requiring two-step verification. If something happened to you, could the channel be handed over? Discuss it with your co-admin and read how to transfer channel ownership.

Watch your phone number

Your Telegram account is linked to your phone number. If you change numbers, move your Telegram account to the new number in settings before you give up the old SIM. Otherwise you may lose the account entirely. See moving Telegram to a new phone.

Check the inactivity setting

Telegram deletes accounts that stay inactive for a period you choose in privacy settings. If you have a secondary admin account that you rarely use, make sure its inactivity period is long enough, or log in regularly.

Never share login codes

Most channel takeovers start with an admin giving away a login code to someone pretending to be Telegram support or a buyer. Telegram will never ask you for it.

Advanced backup options

A private archive channel

Some admins keep a private channel with only themselves in it and forward every post there as they publish. It is quick, but it is not a true backup: it lives on the same account and the same platform. It helps against accidental deletion in the main channel, not against losing your account.

A bot that archives new posts

If you are comfortable with code, a bot added as an admin to your channel can receive each new post through Telegram's Bot API and save it to your own storage. This gives a continuous backup of new posts going forward. It does not copy old posts, so combine it with a one-time full export. If you use someone else's archiving bot, remember that you are giving it access to your channel content.

An RSS or web copy

Public channels have a web preview page that shows recent posts. Some admins use feeds from this to keep a copy on a website or blog. It is a partial backup of text and some media, useful mainly for public channels.

Keep the originals

The best media backup is often the one you already have. If you create images and videos yourself, keep the original files organised by date on your own storage. Exported media may be compressed; your originals are not.

Restoring: what is and is not possible

It is important to be honest about this. Telegram has no button to import a backup into a channel and recreate it exactly. A restore is a rebuild.

If a few posts were deleted

  1. Find the posts in your latest export.
  2. Repost the text and media in the channel.
  3. Add a short note if the date matters: "Originally posted in March".

The new posts will show today's date and will not have their old view counts. Links to the old posts will not work.

If the channel was lost

  1. Create a new channel. Use the same name if possible.
  2. Try for the old username. If the old channel was deleted, the username may become free after some time. If someone else takes it, you will need a new one.
  3. Restore identity. Set the description and photo from your settings record.
  4. Re-add admins with the permissions you recorded.
  5. Repost key content. You do not need everything. Repost the evergreen posts, the guides, and your pinned welcome post first.
  6. Tell your audience. Post the new link wherever you promoted the old one: your website, social profiles, directory listings, partner channels.

Subscribers do not move automatically. You will be rebuilding your audience, which is why the ownership protections above matter as much as the export.

If the channel was banned

A ban means Telegram decided the channel broke its rules. Before rebuilding, understand why and fix it. Recreating a banned channel with the same content usually ends the same way.

Worked example: a backup plan for a mid-sized channel

This is an illustrative plan for a channel that posts daily.

  • Owner: two-step verification on, recovery email set.
  • Co-admin: a trusted friend with rights to post, edit, delete and pin, but not to add admins.
  • Monthly: full export of the previous month in HTML and JSON, saved to the laptop, copied to an external drive and a cloud folder.
  • Before any big change: an extra full export.
  • Settings record: updated whenever an admin or bot changes.
  • Originals: all image designs kept in a dated folder.
  • Twice a year: open an old export to check it still works and media opens.

The monthly routine takes about fifteen minutes plus waiting time for the export.

Extra care for private and paid channels

A private channel has no username, so its invite links are the only way in. If you lose the channel, every link you have shared stops working, and there is no public name for subscribers to search.

  1. Keep a list of where each invite link was shared: your website, a payment bot, partner channels, emails to customers.
  2. For paid channels, keep your own customer list from your payment system. It is the only way to contact paying members if the channel disappears, because Telegram will not give you a subscriber export.
  3. Save your terms of access and refund policy, so you can honour them during a rebuild.
  4. Store exports of paid content securely. They are the product you sell, so an unprotected backup folder is a leak waiting to happen.

What to do next

Once your first backup is done:

  • Put a monthly reminder in your calendar for the next export.
  • Write your settings record today, while you remember everything.
  • Check that every admin has two-step verification on.
  • Tell your co-admin where the backups are stored and how to access them if you are unavailable.
  • If your channel is public, make sure its listings point to the right username. If it is not yet listed, you can submit it to TGDirectory for free.

Common mistakes

  • Trusting the cloud alone. It protects against device loss, not account or channel loss.
  • Exporting from mobile. The full export tool is in Telegram Desktop.
  • Leaving the file size limit low. Videos are skipped silently, and you discover it only when you need them.
  • Never opening the export. An unchecked backup may be incomplete or corrupt.
  • One copy on one laptop. Keep at least one copy elsewhere.
  • No second admin. If your account goes, nobody can act.
  • Giving the "add admins" right too freely. It is the fastest way for a channel to slip out of your control.
  • Changing your phone number without moving the account. This loses accounts every day.
  • Forgetting the discussion group. Comments live there, not in the channel.
  • Expecting a one-click restore. Plan for a rebuild instead.

FAQ

Can I back up a Telegram channel on my phone?

The mobile apps do not include the full chat export tool. You can forward posts to Saved Messages or a private channel, but for a real backup use Telegram Desktop on a computer.

Can I export a channel I do not own?

If you can see a channel's posts, Telegram Desktop may let you export what is visible to you. Some channels restrict saving content, which can block exporting. Respect the owner's rights: exported content is still their work.

Does the export include subscriber lists?

Do not expect it. Channel exports are about content, not the audience. Your audience is protected only by keeping the channel itself safe.

Can I restore a deleted channel from a backup?

Not as it was. You can create a new channel and repost content from your export, but subscribers, view counts and old post links do not come back.

How large will my export be?

It depends on how much media your channel has. Text-only exports are small. Channels with lots of video can need a great deal of space. Export media in date ranges if space is short.

Is my exported backup secure?

Only as secure as where you store it. The export is plain files. Keep it on encrypted storage if it contains anything private, such as a discussion group export with members' messages.

Summary

A Telegram channel lives in the cloud, but that does not protect it from lost accounts, hacks, bans, rogue admins or your own mistakes. Back up content with Telegram Desktop's chat export, choosing all media types, a high file size limit and HTML or JSON format. Export the linked discussion group separately, repeat on a regular schedule with date ranges, and keep copies in more than one place. Record your settings and admins yourself. Most importantly, protect ownership with two-step verification, a trusted second admin and careful phone number changes, because no backup can restore your subscribers.
