Bots & Mini AppsHow to Add a Bot to a Telegram Channel or Group

To add a bot to a Telegram group, open the group's member list, choose to add members, and search for the bot's exact username. For a channel, you add the bot as an administrator, because only admins can do anything in a channel. In both cases, give the bot only the permissions its job needs.

This guide covers both cases step by step, explains which admin rights to grant, and shows how to check and remove a bot safely.

Before you add any bot

A bot you add to your community can act inside it. Spend a minute checking it first.

  • Confirm the exact username. Copycat bots use similar names. Get the username from the developer's own channel or website, not a random forward.
  • Read the bot's description. It should say what the bot does and who runs it.
  • Know what rights it needs. A good bot explains which admin permissions it requires and why.
  • Make sure you have the rights to add it. In a channel, only admins with permission to add admins can add a bot as admin. In a group, it depends on the group's settings and your role.

If you are not sure a bot is genuine, read How to Find a Telegram Bot Safely first.

How bots behave in groups and channels

Groups and channels work differently, and that changes how bots fit in. If you are unsure which one you run, see Telegram Channel vs Group.

In a group

A group is a conversation where members can talk. A bot can be added as a normal member or as an admin.

As a normal member, a bot usually sees only messages meant for it, such as commands and replies to its own messages. This is the bot's privacy mode, which the developer controls. As an admin, a bot generally receives all messages in the group, which moderation bots need.

In a channel

A channel is a one-way broadcast. Only admins can post, so a bot must be an admin to do anything useful, such as posting, editing or reacting to new posts. A bot cannot sit in a channel as an ordinary subscriber and act.

How to add a bot to a group

The exact wording of buttons varies between Telegram apps and versions, but the steps are similar everywhere.

  1. Open the group and tap its name at the top to open the group info.
  2. Choose the option to add members.
  3. Search for the bot's exact username, including the "bot" ending.
  4. Select the bot and confirm.
  5. If the bot needs admin rights, open the group's administrators section, add the bot as an admin, and choose its permissions.
  6. Send a test command, such as /help, to check it responds.

Some bots also offer a button or link in their own chat that adds them to a group for you. That is convenient, but still check which group you pick and which rights Telegram shows before confirming.

If you cannot add the bot

  • The group may restrict who can add members. Ask an admin, or check the group's permissions.
  • The developer may have blocked group use. Some bots are built only for private chats.
  • You may have the wrong username. Search again and check every character.

How to add a bot to a channel

  1. Open your channel and tap its name to open the channel info.
  2. Go to the administrators section.
  3. Choose to add an admin.
  4. Search for the bot's exact username and select it.
  5. Review the list of permissions Telegram shows and turn off anything the bot does not need.
  6. Save. The bot now appears in the channel's admin list.
  7. Test the bot from its own chat or dashboard, following the developer's instructions.

Because bots in channels are always admins, the permission screen matters a lot. Step 5 is the step people skip, and it is the one that protects you.

Which admin rights to give

Telegram lets you switch individual permissions on and off. The names differ slightly between groups and channels and between app versions, but the ideas are the same. Grant the minimum.

Typical needs by bot type

  • Posting or scheduling bots usually need the right to post messages and possibly to edit them. They rarely need to add members or change channel info.
  • Moderation bots usually need the right to delete messages and to ban or restrict users. They seldom need to post as the channel.
  • Welcome bots need to send messages in the group. Some also need to restrict new members until they pass a check.
  • Verification and claim bots often need only to be present as an admin, so a service can confirm you control the channel.

Rights to be careful with

  • Adding new admins. This lets the bot promote other accounts. Very few bots need it. Leave it off unless you have a clear reason.
  • Changing channel or group info. This includes the name, picture and description. Most bots do not need it.
  • Managing invite links. Only give this to bots built for invite management.

The same care applies to human admins: give each person only the rights their role needs.

Example: claiming your channel on TGDirectory

Some services ask you to add a bot as an admin to prove you control a channel. TGDirectory works this way. On your listing's page, under "Is this your channel?", you add our bot as an admin of the channel, and the site checks with Telegram that it is there.

A successful claim gives your listing an "Owner verified" badge. That badge is not Telegram's own verification and is not an endorsement of the content. It only shows the owner proved control. Our guide How to Claim Your Channel on TGDirectory has the details.

If your channel is not listed yet, you can submit it for free.

How to check a bot is working

  1. Send the command or action the bot is meant to respond to.
  2. Check the bot appears in the member or admin list you expected.
  3. Review its permissions once more in the admin settings.
  4. Watch the first few actions it takes. A moderation bot that deletes the wrong messages is easier to fix early.

If nothing happens, the bot's service may be offline, it may lack a permission, or privacy mode may stop it seeing messages. The bot's help command or the developer's support channel usually explains which.

How to remove a bot

Removing a bot is quick, and it is good practice when you stop using one.

  1. Open the channel or group info.
  2. Go to administrators and remove the bot's admin rights, if it has any.
  3. Go to the member list, find the bot and remove it.
  4. If you used the bot's own settings or dashboard, check whether it holds any other access, and revoke it there too.

Review your admin list every few months. Old bots with powerful rights are an unnecessary risk.

Common mistakes

  • Adding a look-alike bot. Always copy the username from the developer's official source.
  • Granting every permission. Most bots need two or three rights at most. Turn the rest off.
  • Letting a bot add admins. This right lets a compromised bot hand control of your channel to others.
  • Forgetting about privacy mode. A non-admin bot in a group often cannot see ordinary messages, which can look like a fault.
  • Leaving unused bots in place. Remove bots you no longer use.
  • Sharing your account login with a bot service. A bot should be added through Telegram's admin tools. Never share your login code or password.

FAQ

Can a bot join my channel on its own?

No. Someone with the right admin permissions must add it. Bots cannot join channels or groups by themselves.

Why can't my bot see messages in the group?

It is probably in privacy mode and not an admin. In that state it only sees commands and replies to its own messages. Making it an admin usually changes that.

Does a bot in my channel see who my subscribers are?

A bot admin can do what its permissions allow through Telegram's Bot API. Telegram limits what bots can see, but check the bot's description and the rights you grant, and only add bots you trust.

Can I add the same bot to several channels?

Yes. A bot can be an admin in many channels and groups at once. Its permissions are set separately in each one.

Is it safe to add a bot as an admin?

It is as safe as the bot and the rights you give it. Use bots from trusted developers, grant the minimum permissions, and remove them when you are done.

Summary

In a group, add a bot through the member list and promote it to admin only if it needs to be. In a channel, add it straight to the administrators list, because bots can only act there as admins. Check the exact username first, grant the fewest permissions possible, and avoid the right to add new admins. Test the bot, review its rights from time to time, and remove it when you stop using it.
