How to Enable Comments on a Telegram Channel

Telegram channels get comments by linking a discussion group. Here is how to set it up, moderate it, and keep the conversation useful.

Running a ChannelHow to Enable Comments on a Telegram Channel

Telegram channels do not have a separate "comments on" switch. Instead, you link a group to the channel as its discussion group, and a comment button then appears under each new post. Comments are stored in that group, so you moderate them there.

This guide shows how to link a discussion group, how comments behave, and how to keep them friendly and free of spam.

How comments work on Telegram channels

A channel is a one-way broadcast. Only admins can post. To let subscribers reply, Telegram connects the channel to a group.

  • Each new channel post is automatically copied into the linked group.
  • Replies to that copy show up as comments under the original post in the channel.
  • Readers tap the comment button under a post to read and write comments.
  • Everything people write lives in the group, under that group's rules and admins.

This design means the discussion group is a real group. People can also open it directly and chat there, unless you restrict that. Our guide on Telegram channel vs group explains the difference between the two formats.

How to enable comments, step by step

You need to be the owner of the channel, or an admin with the right to change channel info. You also need to be an admin of the group you link.

  1. Open your channel and tap its name to open the channel info.
  2. Open the channel's settings.
  3. Look for the Discussion option.
  4. Choose an existing group you manage, or let Telegram create a new group for you.
  5. Confirm the link. Telegram may ask you to agree that the group's history will be visible to new members.
  6. Publish a new post to check that the comment button appears under it.

Comments usually appear only on posts published after you linked the group. Older posts generally stay without a comment button.

Using an existing group or a new one

A new group is the cleanest choice. It starts empty and exists only to hold comments.

An existing group works too, but its members and old messages come with it. If the group already has its own active chat, channel posts will start appearing in the middle of it. Some owners like that, because it connects two communities. Others find it messy.

How to turn comments off

To remove comments, go back to the Discussion setting in the channel's settings and unlink the group. The group still exists afterwards. Comments already written stay in the group, but the comment button will no longer appear on new posts.

If you want comments on some posts and not others, check the options available in your app. Features for this have changed over time, so look at the post and group settings rather than relying on an old guide.

Moderating comments

Because comments live in the discussion group, all moderation happens there.

Set up admins for the group

Channel admins are not automatically admins of the discussion group. Add the people who should moderate as group admins, with rights to delete messages and ban users. Our guide on adding admins to a Telegram channel covers how admin rights work.

Use the group's built-in tools

Groups have several tools that help keep comments manageable.

  • Slow mode: limits how often each member can send a message. Useful when a post attracts a flood of replies. See slow mode and member restrictions.
  • Member permissions: decide whether members can send links, media or stickers.
  • Join requirements: depending on the app version, you may be able to require that people join the group before they can comment.
  • Reports: members can report messages, and you can act on them.

Deal with spam bots

Popular channels attract spam comments, often with scam links or fake giveaways. Act early.

  1. Restrict links and media for new members if your group allows it.
  2. Add a trusted moderation bot if you need one. Read how to stop spam bots in Telegram groups first.
  3. Delete spam quickly and ban the account.
  4. Pin a short set of rules. Our guide on writing Telegram group rules can help.

Making comments worth having

Turning comments on does not guarantee conversation. A few habits help.

  • Ask a clear question at the end of some posts. "What would you add?" invites replies more than no prompt at all.
  • Reply to early comments. People comment more when they see the author is reading.
  • Thank people for corrections. Readers who catch mistakes are valuable.
  • Keep it on topic. Remove off-topic arguments before they take over a thread.
  • Do not chase every metric. Comments are one signal among many. Our guide on Telegram channel engagement rate explains how to think about engagement more broadly.

Comments and reactions

Telegram also offers reactions, which let readers respond with an emoji without writing a comment. Reactions are set separately in the channel's settings. Many channels use both: reactions for a quick signal and comments for real discussion. If your audience is small, reactions alone may be enough at first.

Common mistakes

  • Linking a busy existing group by accident. Channel posts will flood its chat. Use a fresh group unless you mean to merge the two.
  • Forgetting to appoint group moderators. Without them, spam can sit under your posts for hours.
  • Expecting comments on old posts. The comment button usually appears only on posts published after linking.
  • Leaving links open to everyone. This is the easiest path for scam links.
  • Treating the discussion group as private. Members of the group, and anyone who opens comments, can read what is written there. Tell people not to post personal details.
  • Never replying. A comment section the author ignores tends to go quiet or turn sour.

FAQ

Why is there no comment button under my posts?

Most often, no discussion group is linked, or the post was published before you linked one. Check the Discussion setting and publish a new post to test.

Can people comment without joining the group?

This depends on the group's settings and the current app version. Some setups let people comment from the channel directly, others require joining. Check the group's permissions to see what your options are.

Can I delete a single comment?

Yes. A group admin with the right to delete messages can remove any comment, either from the comment thread or from the group itself.

Can I see who commented?

Yes. Comments show the name of the account that wrote them, unless the person posted as a channel they manage. See who can see you in Telegram channels and groups for what readers can and cannot see.

Do comments help a channel grow?

They can make a channel feel more alive and give you ideas for content. They are not a shortcut to growth on their own. Our guide on how to grow a Telegram channel covers the bigger picture.

Summary

To enable comments on a Telegram channel, link a discussion group in the channel's Discussion setting. New posts then get a comment button, and every comment is stored in that group. Appoint group moderators, restrict links for new members, and reply to early comments. If comments stop being useful, you can unlink the group at any time.
