Getting StartedHow to Join a Telegram Channel From a Link or QR Code

To join a Telegram channel, open its link or scan its QR code, and Telegram opens a preview of the channel. Tap Join and its posts start appearing in your chat list. For a private channel you need an invite link, and some channels ask the admins to approve your request first.

This guide covers every common way in: public links, private invite links, usernames, QR codes and folder links. It also shows how to check a channel is genuine before you join.

The kinds of channel links

Telegram channels are shared in a few different forms. Knowing which one you have helps you understand what will happen.

  • Public link: looks like t.me/channelname. It opens a public channel that anyone can find and preview.
  • Username: written as @channelname. It points to the same public channel as the link.
  • Private invite link: a longer t.me link with a random-looking code. It opens a private channel.
  • Join-request link: an invite link that sends a request to the admins instead of joining you straight away.
  • Folder link: opens a shared folder containing several chats at once.

How to join from a link

On a phone

  1. Tap the link. It may be in a message, a website, an email or a social post.
  2. If asked, choose to open it in Telegram.
  3. Telegram shows the channel's name, picture, description and, for public channels, a preview of recent posts.
  4. Tap Join.

If the link opens in your browser instead, the page usually has a button to open the channel in the Telegram app. Make sure Telegram is installed and up to date.

On desktop

  1. Click the link.
  2. Your browser may ask to open Telegram Desktop. Allow it.
  3. The channel opens in the app.
  4. Click Join.

You can also paste a t.me link into any chat, such as Saved Messages, and click it there.

How to join from a username

If you only have a name like @channelname:

  1. Open Telegram.
  2. Tap the search bar at the top of your chat list.
  3. Type the username, with or without the @.
  4. Tap the matching result.
  5. Tap Join.

Check the spelling carefully. Fake channels often use names one letter away from the real one.

How to join from a QR code

Channels often share QR codes on posters, websites, slides or business cards. Telegram can create a QR code for any channel link.

Scanning with your phone camera

  1. Open your phone's camera app.
  2. Point it at the QR code and hold steady.
  3. Tap the link notification that appears.
  4. Telegram opens the channel preview.
  5. Tap Join.

Most modern phone cameras read QR codes directly. If yours does not, a trusted QR scanner from your official app store will do the same job.

A QR code is just a link

Scanning a QR code is the same as tapping a link. Before you join, look at the address your phone shows. It should be a t.me link. Do not scan Telegram QR codes from strangers that claim to "log you in" or "verify your account". A login QR code connects a new device to your account, which is very different from joining a channel.

Making a QR code for your own channel

If you run a channel, open its info page and look for the share or QR option. Use the QR code on printed material or slides.

Private channels and join requests

Private invite links

A private channel has no public username. You can only join through an invite link from the owner or an admin. When you open one, you may see the channel name and subscriber count, but not its posts, until you join.

Join requests

Some invite links ask the admins to approve each new member. After you tap the request button:

  1. Telegram tells you your request has been sent.
  2. You wait for an admin to approve or decline it.
  3. Once approved, the channel appears in your chat list.

Admins sometimes use a bot to handle requests. A genuine bot may ask you a simple question. It will never need your phone number, login code or password. If it does, leave.

Expired or invalid links

Admins can revoke invite links or set them to expire. If a link says it has expired or is invalid, ask the person who shared it for a new one.

Joining several channels with a folder link

A folder link lets you join a set of related chats in one go, such as a community's announcements channel and its discussion group. When you open one, Telegram lists the chats inside and lets you pick which to join. Check each one before you add it.

Check a channel before you join

Joining a channel is low risk in itself, because subscribers in a channel are generally not shown to other subscribers. The risk comes from what the channel then asks you to do. Before you join, check:

  • The name and username match exactly. Watch for swapped letters, extra underscores or added words like "official" or "support".
  • The description makes sense. It should say clearly what the channel posts.
  • The posts look real. A public channel shows a preview. Empty or brand-new channels claiming to be a big brand are a warning sign.
  • The link came from a trusted source. The best source is the official website or verified profile of the person or brand.
  • There are no promises of easy money. Guaranteed profits, free crypto and "double your deposit" offers are scams.

For crypto projects in particular, read how to verify a crypto project's official Telegram.

Finding channels without random links

If you want to discover channels rather than rely on links people send you, browse a directory. On TGDirectory, every listing is reviewed by a person before it appears, and illegal, pornographic and scam channels are not accepted. You can browse by categories, see Best Telegram Channels ranked by real subscriber count, or check top rated channels ranked by reader ratings.

How to leave a channel

If a channel is not for you, leave it.

  1. Open the channel.
  2. Tap its name to open the info page, or open the menu.
  3. Tap Leave channel.

You can also mute a channel instead of leaving.

Common mistakes

  • Joining a look-alike channel. Compare the username letter by letter with the official source.
  • Scanning a "login" QR code from a stranger. That can hand over your account.
  • Sharing your login code with a "verification bot". No channel needs it.
  • Assuming an expired link means the channel is gone. It may simply need a new invite.
  • Joining everything in a folder link. Pick only the chats you trust.

FAQ

Can I see a channel's posts before joining?

For public channels, yes. Telegram shows a preview of recent posts. Private channels usually show only the name and some basic details until you join.

Can other subscribers see that I joined a channel?

In a channel, subscribers are generally not shown to each other. Admins can see the subscriber list. Groups are different.

Why does my link say it has expired?

The admin revoked it or set an expiry. Ask for a fresh invite link.

What is a join request?

It is an invite link that asks the admins to approve you. You join once an admin accepts.

Is scanning a Telegram QR code safe?

A QR code for a channel is just a link and is as safe as the channel it opens. Never scan a code that claims to log you in or verify your account unless you started that login yourself.

Summary

Joining a Telegram channel takes a tap: open its link, search its username or scan its QR code, then tap Join. Private channels need an invite link, and some require an admin to approve you. Before you join, check the name, the posts and where the link came from. If you prefer to browse rather than follow random links, a reviewed directory is a safer place to start.
