A step-by-step check to confirm you are in a crypto project's real Telegram channel or group, and the signs that reveal a clone or impersonator.
To verify a crypto project's official Telegram, start from the project's official website, follow the Telegram link it publishes, and compare the username character by character. Then check that the channel's history, admins and links agree with what the project says elsewhere. Never trust a link forwarded by a stranger, and never trust an account that messages you first. This guide is about safety, not about whether any project is a good idea, and it is not investment advice.
Clone channels and groups are one of the main tools of crypto scammers on Telegram. A clone copies the real project's name, logo, description and even pinned posts. It then posts fake airdrops, fake "migration" links or fake support contacts. Because Telegram makes it easy to create a channel, anyone can build a convincing copy in minutes.
Confirming you are in the real place is the first defence. It does not tell you whether a project is trustworthy or worth your money. It only tells you who is speaking.
These signals help, but none of them is proof on its own.
Telegram verifies some well-known accounts, channels and bots. A real verification checkmark appears next to the name, shown by Telegram itself. Be careful: scammers often put a check emoji inside the display name or description to imitate it. A checkmark that is part of the name text is not verification. Read how to get verified on Telegram to understand what Telegram's checkmark means.
Many legitimate projects are not verified, so a missing checkmark is not proof of a fake.
Telegram sometimes labels accounts it has identified as scams or impersonators. If you see such a label, leave. If you do not see one, that does not mean the account is safe.
Scroll back through the posts. A real project channel usually has a long, consistent history. A clone often has a short history, a sudden burst of posts or copied posts all dated recently.
A large number does not prove much, because subscribers can be bought. A small number does not prove a fake either. Use it only alongside other signals. Our guide on why bought Telegram subscribers hurt explains why counts can mislead.
Real communities usually allow some discussion and questions. Clones often turn comments off so nobody can warn others. A linked discussion group where every message is praise and nobody asks questions is also a warning sign.
Check how the project says it handles support. Most legitimate projects state that admins will never message you first. If someone claiming to be an admin contacts you privately, treat it as a scam.

Directories, including TGDirectory, can help you find channels, but a listing is not proof that a channel is official. On TGDirectory, every submission is reviewed by a person and scam channels are not accepted. An "Owner verified" badge means the owner proved they control the channel by adding our bot as an admin. That confirms control of that channel, not that it is the project's official one, and it is not an endorsement. Always confirm against the project's own website. You can browse listings through categories. If a channel you find there claims to be a project's official one, check it against the project's website before you trust it.
If you find a clone listed anywhere on our site, report it from the listing's page.
A real Telegram checkmark is a strong sign that the account is authentic. It says nothing about whether the project is a good idea. Check the username against the official website too.
Be extra cautious. Without an independent source to check against, it is very hard to confirm what is official.
They cannot take the exact same username while it is in use, but they can register a very similar one. That is why character-by-character checking matters.
Most legitimate projects say admins will never message you first. Treat private messages from "admins" or "support" as scams.
No. Confirming who is speaking is not the same as judging a project. This guide is not investment advice, and crypto carries real risk of loss.
Use Telegram's report option on the channel and tell the real project. Our guide on how to spot Telegram scams covers more warning signs.
To find a crypto project's real Telegram, start from its official website, open the link it publishes and compare the username exactly. Then check the history, comments, admins and Telegram's own checkmark, remembering that no single signal is proof. Never trust links from strangers or admins who message you first, and never share codes or recovery phrases. Knowing the channel is real tells you who is speaking, not whether to trust what they sell. This is general safety information, not investment advice.
