How to Search Inside a Telegram Channel

Find old posts in any Telegram channel by keyword, hashtag, media type or date, and learn why some searches come back empty.

Getting StartedHow to Search Inside a Telegram Channel

To search inside a Telegram channel, open the channel, then open its menu or info page and choose Search. Type a word or hashtag and Telegram shows matching posts, newest first. You can also browse the channel's shared media, files and links, or jump to a specific date.

Channels can hold years of posts, and scrolling is slow. This guide shows the different ways to find what you need, on phone and desktop, plus tips for channel owners who want their posts to be easy to find.

Where the search option is

The search button sits in slightly different places depending on your device and app version.

On a phone

  1. Open the channel.
  2. Tap the three-dot menu at the top, or tap the channel name to open its info page.
  3. Tap Search.
  4. Type your word or phrase.

On desktop

  1. Open the channel.
  2. Click the search (magnifying glass) icon at the top of the chat window.
  3. Type your word or phrase.

Results appear as a list, or you can step through them one by one inside the channel. Tap a result to jump to that post.

If you cannot find the option, update your app. The layout changes from time to time, but search inside a chat has been a core feature for a long time.

Searching by keyword

Keyword search looks at the text of posts and captions.

Tips for better keyword results

  • Use one or two distinctive words. A rare word from the post works better than a full sentence.
  • Try different word forms. If "schedule" finds nothing, try "scheduled" or "scheduling".
  • Search in the channel's language. A channel written in Spanish needs Spanish search terms.
  • Remember that text in images is not searchable. If a post is a screenshot or image with no caption, keyword search will not find it.

Searching by hashtag

Many channels tag posts with hashtags, such as #tutorial or #news. Tap a hashtag in any post and Telegram searches for it.

  • Tapping a hashtag inside a channel usually shows posts with that tag in the same channel.
  • Telegram may also offer to search for the hashtag more widely, across chats you are in or public posts. What is offered depends on your app version.

Hashtags are the fastest way to browse a series of posts. Look at a channel's pinned post or description: owners often list their main tags there.

Browsing media, files, links and voice

Sometimes you do not remember the words, but you remember it was a video or a PDF. Use the channel's shared content instead of search.

  1. Open the channel's info page by tapping its name.
  2. Scroll to the shared content section.
  3. Switch between tabs such as Media, Files, Links, Music or Voice.
  4. Tap an item to open it, or open the post it came from.

On desktop, the same content appears in the channel's info panel. This is also a good way to collect all the files or guides a channel has shared.

Jumping to a date

If you know roughly when something was posted, jump to that date.

  1. Open the channel's search.
  2. Look for a calendar icon near the search field.
  3. Pick the date.
  4. Telegram jumps to the posts from that day.

On some versions you can also tap the date bubble that appears while you scroll to open a calendar. If neither option appears in your app, scroll quickly using the scroll bar on desktop.

Searching across all your chats

The search bar at the top of your main chat list searches more widely. It can find:

  • Chats, channels and groups you are in, by name.
  • Public channels, groups and bots by name or username.
  • Messages that match your words across your chats.

This is useful when you remember a post but not which channel it was in. Global search results for public channels depend on Telegram's own ranking. To find new channels by topic, browse categories or read how to find Telegram channels.

Searching a channel you have not joined

You can open a public channel without joining, using its link or username. While previewing, you can usually still scroll and search its posts. If you want to keep coming back, join it. See how to join a Telegram channel from a link or QR code.

Private channels are different. You need an invite link and must join before you can read or search them.

Why a search finds nothing

If your search comes up empty, check these causes:

  • The word is only in an image or video. Search reads text and captions, not pictures.
  • The post was deleted or edited. Owners can remove or change posts at any time.
  • You are spelling it differently. Try a shorter part of the word.
  • The post is in a linked discussion group. Comments live in the channel's discussion group, which you search separately.
  • The app is out of date. Update and try again.

Tips for channel owners: make your posts findable

If you run a channel, a little structure helps readers find older posts and keeps them reading.

  1. Use a small, fixed set of hashtags. For example, one per post type. List them in your description.
  2. Write captions on images. Add a sentence with the key words, so posts can be found by search.
  3. Pin an index post. Link to your most useful posts and keep it updated.
  4. Use clear titles. Start important posts with a short headline.
  5. Write a clear channel description. It helps people understand your channel before they join. Read how to write a Telegram channel description.

Clear titles and descriptions also help in Telegram's own search. We cover that in Telegram SEO: how to rank in Telegram search.

Common mistakes

  • Searching full sentences. Use one or two distinctive words instead.
  • Expecting search to read images. Text inside pictures is not searchable.
  • Searching the channel for comments. Comments are in the discussion group.
  • Scrolling for minutes. Use the date jump or shared media tabs instead.
  • Forgetting hashtags. Tapping one is often the quickest way through a series.

FAQ

Can I search a Telegram channel without joining it?

For public channels, usually yes. Open it from its link or username, and you can preview and search posts. Private channels require you to join first.

Does Telegram search inside photos and videos?

No. Search finds text in posts and captions. Use the Media tab to browse pictures and videos by eye.

How do I find a post from a specific date?

Open the channel's search and use the calendar option, if your app shows it. It jumps to posts from the day you choose.

Can I search for posts by hashtag across Telegram?

Telegram supports hashtag search, and may let you search beyond the current chat. What is available depends on your app version.

Why do I not see a search button in a channel?

Your app may be out of date, or the option may sit inside the three-dot menu or the info page. Update the app and look there.

Summary

Searching inside a Telegram channel is quick once you know where to look. Use the Search option in the channel's menu for words and hashtags, the shared media tabs for files and videos, and the calendar to jump to a date. If a search finds nothing, the text may be inside an image or in the discussion group. Owners can make posts easier to find with hashtags, captions and a pinned index post.
