What makes a Telegram secret chat different from a normal chat, how to start one, and what it can and cannot protect.
A Telegram secret chat is a one-to-one conversation that is end-to-end encrypted, so only the two devices in it can read the messages. It is stored only on those devices, not in Telegram's cloud, and you can set messages to disappear on a timer. Normal Telegram chats do not work this way.
This guide explains how secret chats differ from regular chats, how to start one, and what they protect you from.
Telegram has two kinds of private conversation.
Every normal chat on Telegram is a cloud chat. Messages are encrypted between your device and Telegram's servers, then stored there. That is why you can log in on a new phone, a tablet and a computer and see the same history everywhere.
Cloud chats are convenient, but they are not end-to-end encrypted. Telegram's servers hold your message history so they can sync it.
A secret chat is end-to-end encrypted. The encryption keys exist only on the two devices taking part. Telegram's servers pass the encrypted messages along but cannot read them.
Because of that, secret chats have some important differences:
The exact buttons vary between apps and versions, so look for the option in the contact's profile or menu.
Not every Telegram app supports secret chats. Some desktop and web versions do not offer them. If you cannot find the option, check on your phone or look in Telegram's help pages for your app.
In a secret chat you can set a timer so messages delete themselves after they have been read. Pick a time that suits the conversation.
A few things to understand about the timer:
Some apps try to block or flag screenshots in secret chats, but behaviour differs between platforms. Do not rely on it. If something must never be kept, do not send it.
Each secret chat has an encryption key, which Telegram can show as an image and a string of characters in the chat's info. If you and the other person compare these in person or over a trusted channel and they match, you can be confident no one is sitting in the middle of your conversation.
Most people never do this, and for casual use that is fine. For truly sensitive conversations it is worth the minute it takes.
Secret chats are a good fit when you want to reduce who could ever read a conversation.
End-to-end encryption protects the message in transit and on the server. It does not protect against everything.
Use secret chats when the content would cause real harm if it leaked.
Normal cloud chats are fine for everyday messaging, group plans and anything you want to search later from any device.
Channels and groups on Telegram are always cloud-based. There is no secret mode for them. If you run or join a channel, assume that anything posted can be seen by every subscriber and forwarded beyond it.
If you are curious about how much of your identity shows up in public spaces, read our guide on who can see you in a Telegram channel or group.
Yes. Secret chats are end-to-end encrypted between the two devices in the conversation. Normal chats, groups and channels are not.
No. Secret chats are one-to-one only. Groups and channels are always cloud chats.
Secret chats are tied to the device where they were started. They do not sync to your other devices, and some desktop and web apps do not support them at all.
Secret chats are designed to keep content inside the conversation, and forwarding is restricted there. The other person can still copy or photograph what you send, so the restriction is not a guarantee.
It is lost. Secret chats are not stored in Telegram's cloud, so logging out or losing the device removes them.
Yes. A secret chat needs both devices to set it up, so the other person sees it appear as a separate, marked conversation.
Secret chats are Telegram's end-to-end encrypted option: one-to-one, stored only on the two devices, and able to self-destruct. They are the right tool for sensitive conversations, but they do not protect you from the person you are talking to or from a compromised phone.
