What channel admins, group members and other subscribers can and cannot see about you, and the settings that control it.
In a Telegram channel, other subscribers cannot see that you joined, and your activity is mostly invisible unless you comment. Channel admins can see at least part of the subscriber list. In a group it is different: members can usually see who else is in the group, and everyone sees your name and photo next to your messages.
This guide breaks down who sees what in channels and groups, and which privacy settings decide how much of your profile they see.
The biggest difference is direction.
If you are not sure which you have joined, our guide on channels vs groups explains the difference.
Other subscribers do not see a list of who has joined. They see the subscriber count, the posts and, depending on the channel's settings, the view count and reactions on each post. None of that reveals you.
Admins can view the channel's subscriber list, at least in part. For large channels Telegram may not show every subscriber. What they see about each person depends on that person's privacy settings, such as the profile photo and phone number.
Admins can also see more in some situations:
A post's view count is a number. It does not show admins or anyone else who viewed it.
Reactions on channel posts normally appear as counts. Some newer reaction features may show names, for example on a list of top supporters. If a feature offers you a choice to stay anonymous, check it before you send.
Comments are where your identity shows. Many channels link a discussion group, and comments are messages in that group. When you comment, your name and photo appear to everyone who opens the comments.
Some apps let you comment as one of your own channels instead of your personal account, where that option is offered.
Polls can be anonymous or show who voted. The poll itself usually makes this clear before you vote. If you cannot tell, assume your vote may be visible.
In most groups, members can open the group's info and see who else is in it. Admins of larger groups may be able to hide the member list from regular members. Even then, admins can still see it.
Every message you send in a group shows your display name and profile photo, subject to your privacy settings. Anyone in the group can tap your name to open your profile.
In smaller groups, the sender of a message may be able to see who has read it. Telegram does not offer this in every group, and the details can change.
Group admins can see the member list, remove or restrict members, and see recent admin actions in the group. In many groups, admins can choose to post anonymously as the group, so you may not know which admin wrote a message.
Whether you are in a channel or a group, people who can see your profile see what your privacy settings allow. Check these in your app's Privacy and Security settings.
Your display name is always visible to people who can see your messages, so choose one you are comfortable with.
Respecting your audience's privacy builds trust.
If you run a public channel and list it on TGDirectory, our channel pages show only aggregate figures read from the channel's public web preview, such as subscribers, views per post and posts per week. They do not show who your subscribers are.
Admins can see the channel's subscriber list, at least in part, so they may see that you joined. Other subscribers cannot.
Other users cannot see a list of channels you have joined. Admins of each channel may see you in their own subscriber list.
No. View counts are totals and do not identify viewers.
Only if your phone number setting allows them to. Set it to "Nobody" or "My Contacts" to keep it hidden from strangers.
Groups may show a service message when someone joins or leaves, depending on settings. Admins can see the member list change. Assume some people may notice.
No. Comments show your name and photo, unless your app lets you comment as a channel you own.
In channels you are mostly invisible to other subscribers, but admins can see at least part of the subscriber list and anyone can see your comments. In groups, members usually see who else is there and everyone sees who wrote each message. Your privacy settings decide how much of your profile shows in both places, so review them before you join.
