Tonkeeper vs Telegram Wallet: Which One to Use

The real difference between Tonkeeper and Telegram Wallet is who holds the keys. Learn what each does well, the risks of each, and how many people use both.

Crypto & TONTonkeeper vs Telegram Wallet: Which One to Use

Use Telegram Wallet if you want the simplest way to buy, hold and send small amounts of crypto inside Telegram and are comfortable with a service holding your funds for you. Use Tonkeeper if you want to hold your own keys, connect to Fragment and other TON apps freely, and accept full responsibility for your recovery phrase. Many people use both: Wallet as a convenient entry point and Tonkeeper as the place they keep what they want to control themselves.

The deciding question is custody, so this guide starts there, then compares the two in detail, works through realistic situations, and covers the scams that target users of each. Nothing here is investment advice.

Before you choose: four questions

Answer these honestly and the choice usually makes itself.

  1. How much will you hold? A small amount for trying things out carries little risk either way. A balance you would be upset to lose deserves a deliberate decision about which risk you prefer.
  2. Can you keep a piece of paper safe for years? If not, self-custody will be stressful. If yes, it gives you independence.
  3. What do you need to do? Sending to friends in Telegram points to Wallet. Fragment, collectibles and TON apps point to a self-custodial wallet.
  4. How secure is your Telegram account? If you have not set up two-step verification, do that before putting meaningful funds in any wallet tied to the account.

The one difference that decides everything: custody

Every crypto wallet comes down to one question: who holds the private keys that control the funds?

  • Custodial. A company holds the keys and keeps track of your balance in its own system, much like a bank account. You log in to the company's service to use your funds. If you forget your password, the company can let you back in. If the company freezes your account, restricts your country or stops operating, your access depends on what it decides.
  • Self-custodial (non-custodial). You hold the keys, usually in the form of a recovery phrase of several words. Nobody can freeze your funds on the wallet's side, and nobody can recover them for you. If you lose the recovery phrase and the device, the funds are gone.

Neither is "better". Custodial wallets trade some control for convenience and recoverability. Self-custodial wallets trade convenience for control and independence.

What Telegram Wallet is

Telegram Wallet is the wallet you reach inside Telegram as a mini app, linked to your Telegram account. It is run by a separate company as a service integrated into Telegram, rather than being part of Telegram's core messaging app, and it has its own terms and support. For a full introduction, see Telegram Wallet explained.

Wallet has offered two kinds of storage:

  • A custodial crypto wallet. This is the main, simplest part. Wallet holds the funds and shows your balance. It typically offers buying crypto with a card where available, exchanging between supported assets, a P2P market, and quick transfers to other Telegram users. Some features and higher limits require identity verification, and availability varies by country. Our guide on Telegram Wallet limits and verification explains how this generally works.
  • A self-custodial TON wallet inside the same app. Wallet has also offered a separate self-custodial section, where you hold a recovery phrase and use the TON blockchain directly. Its name and the way it appears inside Wallet have changed over time, so look inside the app for the self-custodial option and read how it is described there.

The two sections are separate. Funds in the custodial part are not automatically in the self-custodial part, and the security rules differ.

Wallet's self-custodial section vs Tonkeeper

Because Wallet has offered a self-custodial section of its own, a fair question is why anyone would install Tonkeeper at all. The honest answer is that, for self-custody, the two approaches are closer than the custodial comparison suggests: in both, you hold a recovery phrase and nobody can restore it for you.

The practical differences are about where you use it and what you can do with it. A self-custodial section inside Wallet keeps everything in one place inside Telegram, which some people find convenient. A dedicated app like Tonkeeper runs outside Telegram, so it keeps working if you are logged out of Telegram, and it is designed around connecting to TON apps and holding collectibles. Some people also prefer to keep their self-custody wallet in a different app from the one tied to their messaging account, so that a problem with one does not affect the other.

Whichever you use, back up its recovery phrase. A self-custodial section is only self-custodial if you have the phrase written down.

What Tonkeeper is

Tonkeeper is an independent, self-custodial wallet for the TON blockchain. It is available as a mobile app and in other forms such as desktop and browser versions. When you create a wallet, Tonkeeper shows you a recovery phrase. That phrase is the wallet; Tonkeeper itself does not hold your keys and cannot restore them.

Tonkeeper is widely used to:

  • Hold and send Toncoin and tokens on TON.
  • Hold collectible items on TON, such as Telegram usernames or anonymous numbers bought on Fragment, and gifts exported to the blockchain.
  • Connect to TON websites and apps through the standard TON wallet connection method, so you can approve transactions from your phone.

If TON itself is unfamiliar, read TON and Telegram explained first.

Side-by-side, point by point

Setting up

  • Telegram Wallet: open it inside Telegram and follow a short start-up flow. Your Telegram account is your login for the custodial part. Very quick for beginners.
  • Tonkeeper: install the app from an official store, create a wallet, and write down the recovery phrase before you continue. Takes a few minutes longer and requires care.

Who can recover your access

  • Telegram Wallet, custodial part: access is tied to your Telegram account and the service's own checks. If you lose your phone, logging back into Telegram typically restores access, subject to the service's security procedures.
  • Tonkeeper and any self-custodial wallet: only the recovery phrase restores access. No support team can help if it is lost.

This point cuts both ways. Losing your Telegram account can mean losing easy access to a custodial wallet linked to it. Losing a recovery phrase means losing a self-custodial wallet for good. Read how to recover a hacked Telegram account to understand how tightly the custodial wallet depends on your account's security.

Who can freeze or restrict your funds

  • Telegram Wallet, custodial part: the service can restrict accounts, require verification, or limit features by country, under its terms and the laws it follows.
  • Tonkeeper: nobody can freeze the funds in your wallet on the wallet's side. Individual tokens can have their own rules, and services you send funds to have theirs, but your Toncoin in your own wallet is under your control.

Sending to friends

  • Telegram Wallet: transfers to other Wallet users are quick and simple, often by choosing a Telegram contact. Transfers inside the service may not touch the blockchain at all.
  • Tonkeeper: you send to a TON address. Every transfer is a blockchain transaction with a network fee. You can also send to people who use any TON wallet, not only those in one service.

Buying crypto with money

  • Telegram Wallet: typically offers ways to buy crypto with a card or through its P2P market, where available, inside the app. For steps, see how to buy TON in Telegram Wallet.
  • Tonkeeper: has offered access to third-party purchase providers in some regions. Many users buy elsewhere and send Toncoin to their Tonkeeper address.

Fees

  • Telegram Wallet: the service sets its own fees for things like withdrawals to external addresses, exchanges and purchases. Internal transfers may be free or cheaper. Check the fee shown before confirming.
  • Tonkeeper: you pay the TON network fee for each transaction, plus any fees charged by apps you use. The wallet shows the estimated fee before you approve.

Fees change, so compare what each app shows on screen for the action you need rather than relying on any figure you read elsewhere.

Fragment, collectibles and TON apps

  • Tonkeeper: built for this. It connects to Fragment and other TON websites through the standard connection method, and holds usernames, numbers and other collectibles directly. See Telegram usernames on Fragment.
  • Telegram Wallet: the custodial part is not designed to hold collectibles you control on-chain. The self-custodial section can connect to TON apps; check inside Wallet which connections it supports.

Identity verification and privacy

  • Telegram Wallet, custodial part: the service may ask for identity verification for some features or above certain limits, following the rules it is subject to.
  • Tonkeeper: creating a wallet does not require identity verification. But every blockchain transaction is public, and the services you use to buy or sell crypto may verify your identity.

Devices

  • Telegram Wallet: works wherever you use Telegram and can open its mini apps.
  • Tonkeeper: a separate app; you install it on each device you want to use and restore the wallet there with the recovery phrase.

Which one suits which person

Choose Telegram Wallet first if

  • You are new to crypto and want to try a small amount without learning about recovery phrases yet.
  • You mostly send small amounts to friends who also use Wallet.
  • You value being able to regain access through your account if you lose your phone.
  • You are happy to follow the service's verification rules.

Choose Tonkeeper first if

  • You want to hold your own keys and not depend on any company's decisions about your account.
  • You want to buy usernames or numbers on Fragment, or hold collectibles on TON. Our guide to Telegram anonymous numbers explains why the wallet that holds a number matters so much.
  • You use TON apps and websites regularly.
  • You are confident you can store a recovery phrase safely offline.

Use both if

  • You buy crypto conveniently in Wallet, then move what you want to keep long-term, or need for on-chain use, to Tonkeeper.
  • You keep a small spending balance in a custodial wallet and larger amounts in self-custody.

Many experienced users end up with exactly this split: convenience for small, everyday amounts; control for anything they would hate to lose to an account problem.

Realistic scenarios

Example 1 (illustrative only): Rosa wants to tip a creator and pay for a mini app. She opens Telegram Wallet, buys a small amount, and sends it within minutes. She never needs a recovery phrase. For her needs, Wallet is the right choice.

Example 2 (illustrative only): Felix wants to bid on a collectible username on Fragment. Fragment asks him to connect a TON wallet. He installs Tonkeeper, writes down the recovery phrase on paper, buys Toncoin elsewhere and sends it to his Tonkeeper address, then connects to Fragment. His username will be held in Tonkeeper, under his control.

Example 3 (illustrative only): Ines has used Wallet for a year and her balance has grown. She is uneasy that a problem with her Telegram account could block access. She creates a Tonkeeper wallet, backs up the phrase, sends a small test amount from Wallet to her Tonkeeper address, confirms it arrived, then moves most of her balance. She keeps a little in Wallet for quick transfers to friends.

How to move funds from Telegram Wallet to Tonkeeper

  1. Create and back up the Tonkeeper wallet first. Write the recovery phrase on paper and store it safely. Do not skip this step "for later".
  2. Copy your Tonkeeper receiving address from inside Tonkeeper.
  3. In Telegram Wallet, choose to send or withdraw the asset to an external address.
  4. Paste the address and check it carefully, including the first and last several characters, and the network the screen names.
  5. Check whether a memo or comment is needed. For sending to your own Tonkeeper wallet it usually is not; for sending to an exchange it often is.
  6. Send a small test amount first.
  7. Confirm it arrived in Tonkeeper. Then send the rest.
  8. Note the fee charged for the withdrawal so you are not surprised next time.

To move in the other direction, copy your deposit address from Wallet and send from Tonkeeper, again testing with a small amount first.

Security habits for each

For Telegram Wallet

  1. Protect your Telegram account with two-step verification. The custodial wallet is only as safe as the account it is tied to. See how to set up Telegram two-step verification.
  2. Never share your login code. Anyone who logs in to your Telegram account may reach the wallet. Read never share your Telegram login code.
  3. Open Wallet only from inside Telegram, from the official bot. Check the username carefully; look-alike bots exist.
  4. Review active sessions in Telegram's privacy and security settings and end any you do not recognise.
  5. Use any extra protection Wallet offers, such as a passcode for the wallet itself.

For Tonkeeper

  1. Store the recovery phrase offline. Paper, kept somewhere safe; consider a second copy in a different safe place.
  2. Never type the phrase into a website or bot. No legitimate service asks for it.
  3. Install only from official app stores or the official website, and check the developer name.
  4. Read every transaction request before approving. A request to transfer all your assets or grant broad permissions for a simple action is a warning sign.
  5. Use a separate wallet for experiments. If you try new TON apps, use a second wallet with a small balance, and keep valuable collectibles in a wallet you rarely connect anywhere.

For channel owners

If you run a channel that earns Stars or accepts tips, the wallet question comes up in a specific way.

  • Withdrawing Stars. Channels and bots that earn Stars have a withdrawal route through Fragment, subject to Telegram's current conditions, and it pays out to a TON wallet. A self-custodial wallet you control is the natural destination. See how to withdraw Telegram Stars and check the current rules in Telegram.
  • Accepting crypto tips. Posting a self-custodial wallet address lets readers send TON from any wallet. Remember that the address and its full transaction history are public.
  • Separate business and personal funds. A wallet used only for channel income makes record-keeping and taxes simpler.
  • Team access. A recovery phrase cannot be safely shared like an admin role. Decide who controls the channel's wallet before money starts arriving, and write the decision down.

Scams that target both

  • Fake apps. Look-alike apps in unofficial stores, or links in chats, install a wallet that sends your phrase to the scammer. Install from official sources only.
  • Fake support. Accounts contact you claiming to be Wallet or Tonkeeper support and ask for your phrase, your login code or to "verify" your wallet on a site. Real support never asks for these.
  • Fake bots. Bots with names close to the official Wallet bot ask you to deposit or log in. Check the exact username.
  • Drainer sites. Websites ask you to connect your wallet for an airdrop or a free gift, then request a transaction that hands over your assets. See how Telegram airdrops work for what real airdrops look like.
  • "Sync your wallet" messages. There is no such thing as syncing a wallet by entering a phrase on a website.

For the wider picture, see crypto scams on Telegram and P2P crypto scams on Telegram.

What to do next

  • If you are just starting: open Telegram Wallet, turn on two-step verification on your Telegram account, and try a small amount.
  • If you need Fragment or on-chain collectibles: install Tonkeeper, back up the phrase, and test with a small transfer.
  • If you have been using one for a while: review whether your current balance would hurt to lose in that wallet's main risk, an account problem for custodial or a lost phrase for self-custodial, and rebalance between the two.
  • If you plan to collect on TON: set up a dedicated self-custodial wallet for collectibles only, separate from the wallet you use to try new apps, so that one careless approval cannot reach your most valuable items.
  • Once a year: check that you can still find your recovery phrase, that your Telegram account still has two-step verification with a working recovery email, and that you still recognise every active session.
  • If you are unsure about tax: crypto transactions may have tax consequences where you live. This is general information; check local rules or ask a professional.

Tokens, stablecoins and collectibles

Most people start with Toncoin, but both wallets deal with more than that, and the differences matter.

Tokens on TON

Tokens issued on TON can be held in any TON self-custodial wallet, including Tonkeeper. Anyone can create a token and give it any name, so a token called the same as a well-known asset is not necessarily the real one. Tonkeeper and other wallets mark tokens they recognise and may hide unknown ones; treat unrecognised tokens that appear in your wallet uninvited as suspicious, and do not interact with them.

What the custodial Wallet supports

A custodial wallet supports the assets the service chooses to list, and it may support some assets on blockchains other than TON. When you withdraw one of those, the network you pick matters: sending on a network the receiving wallet does not support can lose the funds. The withdrawal screen names the network; read it every time.

Telegram gifts and collectibles

Collectible gifts that you move out of Telegram to the blockchain need a TON wallet that you control, and the same is true for usernames and anonymous numbers bought on Fragment. If you plan to collect anything on TON, a self-custodial wallet is part of the plan from the start. Our guide on how to sell or upgrade Telegram gifts explains the gift side.

Backing up a recovery phrase properly

The recovery phrase is the part of self-custody that people most often get wrong, so it is worth slowing down.

  1. Write it on paper, in order, with the word numbers. Check each word against the screen twice.
  2. Do not photograph it or save it in notes, email or cloud storage. Anything synced online can be reached by someone who gets into that account.
  3. Store it somewhere private and durable, away from obvious places and protected from water and fire as far as you reasonably can.
  4. Consider a second copy in another location, so one accident does not wipe out both.
  5. Test the backup. On a spare device, or after deleting the app, restore the wallet with the phrase and confirm the same address appears. Do this while the balance is small.
  6. Tell nobody the phrase. If someone you trust needs to access funds if something happens to you, think about how to leave instructions safely, for example sealed with other important papers, rather than sharing the phrase now.

A recovery phrase is not a password you can change. If it may have been seen by someone else, create a new wallet with a new phrase and move everything to it.

Troubleshooting common problems

A transfer from Wallet has not arrived in Tonkeeper

Recognise it: Wallet shows the withdrawal as sent, Tonkeeper shows nothing.

  1. Check the withdrawal status in Wallet. External withdrawals can take a little time to process.
  2. Check that the address you sent to is exactly your Tonkeeper address.
  3. Look up the transaction on a TON blockchain explorer using your address.
  4. If the explorer shows it arrived, refresh Tonkeeper. If Wallet still shows it as processing after a long time, contact Wallet's support through the app.

Tonkeeper shows a different address or zero balance after restoring

Recognise it: you restored with the correct phrase, but the address differs from the one you used before. TON wallets exist in several technical versions, and the same phrase can correspond to more than one address. Look in Tonkeeper's settings for an option relating to wallet versions or other addresses, and check whether your funds sit at one of them. Do not send anything to the new address until you understand which one holds your funds.

SponsoredBitcoin News DE40K members · CryptoOpen in Telegram

Funds sent to an exchange did not arrive

Recognise it: the transaction succeeded on the blockchain, but the exchange balance did not change. Exchanges often require a memo or comment to identify your deposit. Contact the exchange's support with the transaction details; do not send again.

You can no longer open Wallet

Recognise it: you lost access to your Telegram account, or Wallet asks for verification you cannot complete. Recover your Telegram account first, then contact Wallet's support through official channels. This is the main risk of keeping large amounts in a custodial wallet tied to one account.

Common mistakes

  • Treating the two as the same kind of wallet. One holds your funds for you, the other gives you the keys.
  • Skipping the recovery phrase backup in Tonkeeper. It is the only way back in.
  • Leaving a large balance in a custodial wallet without account protection. Two-step verification on Telegram is essential.
  • Sending to an exchange without the required memo. Funds can get stuck until support finds them.
  • Not sending a test amount first.
  • Approving wallet connections without reading them.
  • Assuming the self-custodial section of Wallet shares the custodial balance. They are separate.
  • Typing a recovery phrase into anything that asks for it online.

FAQ

Is Telegram Wallet custodial or non-custodial?

Its main crypto wallet is custodial: the service holds the funds for you. Wallet has also offered a separate self-custodial section where you hold a recovery phrase. Check inside the app which part you are using.

Is Tonkeeper safer than Telegram Wallet?

They carry different risks. Tonkeeper removes the risk of a company freezing or losing your funds, but adds the risk of you losing the recovery phrase. Telegram Wallet's custodial part is easier to recover but depends on the service and on your Telegram account's security.

Which wallet do I need for Fragment?

Fragment connects to TON wallets through the standard TON connection method. A self-custodial wallet such as Tonkeeper is the usual choice, because it holds the usernames or numbers you buy directly.

Can I move funds between the two?

Yes. Send from one to the other's TON address, check the address and network carefully, and send a small test amount first.

What happens if I lose my phone?

With Telegram Wallet's custodial part, logging back into your Telegram account typically restores access, subject to its security checks. With Tonkeeper, you restore the wallet on a new device using the recovery phrase.

Do I need identity verification for either?

Telegram Wallet may ask for verification for some features or limits, depending on your country. Creating a Tonkeeper wallet does not require it, though services you use to buy or sell crypto may.

Summary

Tonkeeper and Telegram Wallet differ mainly in custody. Telegram Wallet's main wallet is custodial: easy to start, tied to your Telegram account, with quick transfers to other users, buying options and verification rules set by the service. Tonkeeper is self-custodial: you hold the recovery phrase, connect freely to Fragment and TON apps, and carry full responsibility for backups. Choose Wallet for small, convenient amounts and Tonkeeper for control and on-chain collectibles, or combine them. Whichever you use, protect your Telegram account with two-step verification, keep any recovery phrase offline, test transfers with small amounts, and never share a code or phrase with anyone.
