What a +888 anonymous number is, how it is bought on Fragment and used to sign in, what it hides and what it does not, and how to keep the account safe.
A Telegram anonymous number is a +888 number sold on Fragment, Telegram's marketplace, that you can use to create or sign in to a Telegram account without a SIM card. It is not a real phone line: it cannot receive calls or ordinary SMS, and its login codes arrive through Fragment instead. Ownership lives in a TON crypto wallet, which makes it more private in one way and riskier in another.
This guide explains how these numbers work from start to finish, who they actually help, what they do not hide, and the security habits that decide whether the account stays yours.
Every Telegram account is tied to a phone number. Normally that is the number of a SIM card in your phone, and Telegram proves you own it by sending a code by SMS or to another device where you are already signed in.
A +888 number replaces the SIM with a blockchain record. The number exists as a collectible item on the TON blockchain, the network closely linked to Telegram. Whoever holds that item in a TON wallet is treated as the owner of the number. When someone tries to log in with it, Telegram does not send a text message, because there is no mobile network to send one through. Instead, the code is made available to the owner through Fragment.
Three properties follow from this design:
Telegram created the +888 range and offers numbers on Fragment, the same platform it uses for collectible usernames. Some numbers are sold at auction, others at a fixed price, and owners can resell numbers they hold. Short or patterned numbers tend to be treated as collectibles and attract higher bids, while plain random numbers are the cheaper way in. Prices move with demand and with the value of Toncoin, so check the current listings on Fragment itself rather than relying on any figure you read elsewhere, including in older articles.
If you have read about collectible usernames, the model will feel familiar. Our guide to Telegram usernames on Fragment explains the marketplace side in more detail.
People buy +888 numbers for a handful of different reasons, and it helps to know which one is yours, because the right setup differs.
In many countries a SIM card is registered to a passport or ID. A Telegram account on that SIM is therefore indirectly linked to a name, even if you never show the number to anyone. An anonymous number removes that link at the carrier level. This is the main privacy argument for +888 numbers.
Channel owners sometimes want an admin account that is not connected to their personal phone number at all. A brand account, a community moderation account or a shared team account can sit on a +888 number while the owner's personal account stays on their SIM. Our guide to running several Telegram accounts covers how to switch between them on one device.
A SIM can be lost, stolen, cancelled for non-payment, or swapped by a criminal who talks a carrier into issuing a new card. An anonymous number cannot be swapped through a phone shop, because no phone shop is involved. The trade-off is that you now depend on keeping a crypto wallet safe instead.
Some numbers are bought mainly as collectibles, in the same spirit as rare usernames. That is a separate activity from privacy, and buying a number as a speculative asset carries the usual risk that it may be worth less later. Nothing in this guide is investment advice.
Many people who search for +888 numbers only want strangers not to see their phone number. Telegram already handles that for free.
In the privacy settings you can choose who sees your phone number and who can find you by it. With a username set, people can message you without ever learning the number. Group members and channel subscribers do not see your number unless your settings allow it. Our step-by-step guide on how to hide your phone number on Telegram walks through each option, and who can see you in Telegram channels and groups explains what other members actually see.
The difference is this:
If your concern is other users, hiding your number is enough and costs nothing. If your concern is the link between your account and an ID-registered SIM, a +888 number is the tool designed for that. Our broader guide on using Telegram without a phone number compares all the routes.
Check these points before you spend anything:
The exact screens on Fragment change from time to time, so treat these steps as the general shape of the process rather than a list of button names.
Write down which wallet holds the number. People who use several wallets regularly forget which one they used, and later cannot find where their login code is delivered.
Example: Mira runs a hobby channel and wants a separate admin account. She already has a self-custody TON wallet. She opens Fragment, filters for numbers with a fixed price, picks an ordinary random-looking number, and approves the transaction. Ten minutes later the number shows under her wallet's assets on Fragment. She has not yet created an account with it; she has only bought the key. The next section is the part that turns it into an account.
Once you own the number, you sign up through the normal Telegram login screen.
If the login screen does not offer to deliver the code for the number, check that you typed it correctly and that the number really sits in the wallet you connected. A typo in a long number is the most common reason nothing arrives.
Once the account exists, you can log in on other devices the same way, or by scanning a QR code from a device where you are already signed in, which avoids a fresh code. Desktop and web versions support QR login; see Telegram on desktop and web for how that works.
People often ask whether they can move their current account onto a +888 number. Telegram's change-number option exists, and Fragment has offered ways to connect numbers to accounts, but the exact options have changed since launch. Check Fragment's own help information and the change-number option inside Telegram for what is currently possible, and do not follow third-party instructions that ask you to send anyone your login code.
This is the part most guides skip, and it matters more than anything else in this article.
With a normal SIM, the question "who can receive my login code?" has the answer "whoever has my SIM, or whoever can trick my carrier". With a +888 number, the answer is "whoever controls the wallet that holds the number". That shifts every security decision.
A person who obtains your wallet's recovery phrase can move the number to their own wallet. They can then request a login code for your account and read it on Fragment. Without further protection, they would be inside your account.
If you lose the recovery phrase and the device the wallet is on, you can no longer receive login codes for the number. As long as you stay logged in on at least one device, the account keeps working. The moment you are logged out everywhere, there is no way to receive a code. There is no carrier shop you can visit to get a replacement.
Selling the number means handing the buyer the ability to receive login codes for any account still registered on it. That is the single most dangerous misunderstanding about these numbers. Before you transfer a number that has an account on it, either move that account to a different number using Telegram's change-number option, or delete the account if you no longer need it.
Example of why step 1 matters: Leo keeps his +888 number in the same wallet he uses for trading. A fake airdrop site tricks him into approving a transaction that moves his collectibles away, including the number. The thief requests a login code. Because Leo set a two-step verification password, the thief reaches the password screen and stops there. Leo then has time to log in on his desktop, end unknown sessions and move the account to a regular number.
"Anonymous" describes the number, not you. Several things can still link the account to a person, and it is better to know them before relying on one.
The purchase of the number is a transaction on a public blockchain. Anyone can see which wallet bought it and where that wallet's funds came from. If you funded the wallet from an exchange account verified with your ID, the chain of transactions points back toward that account.
Telegram processes the connection information any online service needs, such as IP addresses and device details, for things like security and spam prevention. An anonymous number does not change that. For a plain explanation of what Telegram stores and what is encrypted, see is Telegram safe.
Messages in normal chats are encrypted between your device and Telegram's servers but are not end-to-end encrypted. Secret chats are end-to-end encrypted, one-to-one and tied to the device. An anonymous number does not change any of this. Our guides on whether Telegram is end-to-end encrypted and on secret chats explain the difference.
Your profile photo, name, writing style, the groups you join and the people you contact all say something about you. Using the same username as on other platforms, or contacting the same people from both accounts, connects them in an obvious way.
This is a frequent real-world use, so it deserves its own walkthrough.
Example scenario: a three-person team runs a public news channel. Until now, the channel has been owned by the founder's personal account. The team wants an account dedicated to the project, so that the founder's phone number is not the single key to the channel.
The point of the separation is that the channel no longer depends on one person's phone contract or one person's SIM, while the account itself is still protected by more than one factor.
If the channel is listed on TGDirectory, ownership of the listing is a separate question from who owns the Telegram channel. The listing's "Owner verified" badge comes from adding our bot as an admin and letting the site check with Telegram, which is explained in how to claim your channel on TGDirectory.
Because +888 numbers involve crypto and a marketplace that newcomers do not know well, they attract scams. The common patterns:
Lookalike sites copy Fragment's design and ask you to connect a wallet, then request a transaction that drains it. Always type the address yourself, check the domain carefully, and read every transaction request in your wallet before you approve it. A request to approve access to all your assets for a simple purchase is a warning sign.
Sellers in chats offer ready-made accounts on anonymous numbers. The seller keeps the wallet, so they can request a login code and take the account back whenever they like, or sell it again. Buying an account this way also conflicts with the idea of the account being yours. If you want a number, buy the number into your own wallet.
Someone claiming to be Fragment support, Telegram support or a buyer asks you to read them your login code "to verify the transfer". No genuine process asks for that. A login code is the key to your account, whatever kind of number it is. Read never share your Telegram login code for the reasons and the common tricks.
A buyer offers to purchase your number privately and suggests a middleman. Use the marketplace's own sale tools rather than private arrangements, where you cannot verify anyone. Our broader guide on how to spot Telegram scams covers the warning signs in general.
Some services offer to "rent" you a +888 number for a while. The owner of the wallet controls the login codes during and after the rental. An account created on a rented number can be taken over at any time.
If you have already lost access to the account, follow the steps in how to recover a hacked Telegram account. Be realistic: if the thief holds the number and you are logged out everywhere, recovery may not be possible.
No. The number is only a Telegram login key. It cannot receive calls or text messages from anyone, and other apps or banks cannot use it.
Through Fragment, for the wallet that holds the number. You connect that wallet to Fragment and read the code there. A device where you are already logged in may also show it.
It removes the link between the account and an ID-registered SIM. It does not make chats end-to-end encrypted, hide your connection data from Telegram or erase the public record of the purchase on the blockchain.
The buyer can request login codes for any account still on that number. Move the account to another number, or delete it, before you sell.
Yes. If you lose the wallet and are logged out of every device, you cannot receive a new code. Staying logged in on a second device and backing up the recovery phrase prevent this.
This guide does not give investment advice. Prices change with demand and with Toncoin's value, and a number may be worth less later. Buy one because you need what it does.
A +888 anonymous number is a Telegram-only login key sold on Fragment and held in a TON wallet. It lets you create an account without a SIM, which removes the carrier and SIM-registration link, but it cannot take calls or SMS and every login depends on Fragment and your wallet. The wallet becomes the real key to the account, so protect it like one: a dedicated wallet, an offline recovery phrase, two-step verification on the account, and a second logged-in device. Move or delete the account before you ever sell the number, and ignore anyone offering rented numbers, ready-made accounts or help that involves your login code. If all you want is to hide your number from other users, use the free privacy settings instead.
