What Happens When You Delete Your Telegram Account

What is removed, what other people keep, what happens to your channels and groups, and how to prepare before you delete a Telegram account.

Privacy & SafetyWhat Happens When You Delete Your Telegram Account

When you delete your Telegram account, your account, cloud messages and contacts are removed, and you appear as "Deleted Account" in other people's chats. Channels and groups you created can carry on, but you lose control of them unless you hand them to someone else first. Deletion cannot be undone, so prepare before you do it.

This guide explains what disappears, what stays, and the steps to take before you delete.

Two ways an account gets deleted

You delete it yourself

Telegram lets you delete your account on purpose. You usually start this from Telegram's official account deletion page, which is linked from its help pages, or from an option in the app's settings, depending on your app version. You confirm with a code sent to your Telegram app.

Only use Telegram's own app or website for this. A link sent to you in a chat that claims to "delete" or "verify" your account is very likely a scam. See why you must never share a Telegram login code.

It deletes itself after inactivity

Telegram has an account self-destruct setting. If you do not use your account for a period you choose, it is deleted automatically. You can find and change this period in the privacy or security part of your settings.

If you plan to stop using Telegram for a long time but want to keep your account, check this setting first.

What is removed

When your account is deleted, Telegram's help pages describe the following being removed:

  • Your account itself, including your profile, name, photo and username.
  • Your cloud messages, from your side of your conversations.
  • Your contacts list on Telegram.
  • Your sessions, so you are signed out everywhere.

Your username becomes free for someone else to claim later. If your username matters to you or your brand, keep that in mind.

What other people may still have

Deleting your account does not reach into other people's devices and memories.

  • Chat history on the other side. People you talked to may still see the conversation, with your name replaced by "Deleted Account".
  • Messages you posted in groups. These may remain visible in the group, shown as from a deleted account.
  • Anything forwarded, copied or screenshotted. Once someone else has a copy, deletion cannot recall it.
  • Your phone number in their contacts. If they saved your number on their phone, it stays there.

If there are specific messages you want gone, delete them yourself before you delete the account. Check inside the app whether you can delete them for both sides.

What happens to channels and groups you own

This is where people lose the most.

Channels and groups are separate from your personal account. Deleting your account does not automatically delete them. However, you are the owner, and owners have rights no one else does, such as deleting the channel or managing all admins.

Before you delete your account:

  1. Decide the future of each channel and group. Keep it running, close it, or hand it over.
  2. If you want it to continue, transfer ownership to someone you trust. Our guide on how to transfer Telegram channel ownership explains the process and its requirements.
  3. If you want it gone, delete it yourself first. See how to delete a Telegram channel.
  4. Tell your subscribers or members what is happening, so they are not left wondering.

Telegram has rules for what happens to ownership when an owner's account disappears, and those rules can change. Do not leave it to chance. Transfer or close each channel while you still can.

If your channel is listed on TGDirectory

A TGDirectory listing is about the channel, not your personal account. Its figures are read from the public posts Telegram shows on the channel's web preview, and the page shows when the channel last posted. If you claimed the listing, the "Owner verified" badge is tied to proving control through our bot as a channel admin. If ownership changes, the new owner can claim it in the same way.

What happens to bots you created

Bots made with @BotFather are linked to your account. If you delete your account, you lose the ability to manage them through @BotFather. If a bot matters to you or others, check Telegram's current options for passing bots on to another account before you delete.

What happens to Telegram Premium, Stars and usernames

  • Telegram Premium: an active subscription is tied to your account. Check with the store or method you paid through how to cancel it, because deleting the account may not stop billing on its own.
  • Telegram Stars: Stars are held on your account. Spend or deal with them first, as you should expect to lose any balance.
  • Usernames bought on Fragment: check Fragment's own pages for what happens to a collectible username tied to your account, and move it first if that is possible.

These details change, so confirm them in Telegram's and Fragment's help pages.

Can you come back?

You can sign up again later with the same phone number, but it will be a brand-new, empty account. Your old messages, contacts, groups and channels do not come back.

If you are not sure you want to leave for good, consider alternatives first:

  • Log out of all devices and take a break.
  • Mute or archive chats you find distracting.
  • Leave groups and channels you no longer want.
  • Tighten your privacy settings instead.

Before you delete: a checklist

  1. Export what you want to keep. Telegram Desktop offers a data export option for chats, media and contacts. Run it first.
  2. Hand over or close channels and groups you own.
  3. Move or wind down bots you manage.
  4. Cancel Telegram Premium through the store or method you used to pay.
  5. Use up or settle any Stars balance.
  6. Tell important contacts how to reach you in future.
  7. Delete any specific messages you want gone from both sides, where the app allows it.
  8. Use only Telegram's official deletion page or in-app option.

Common mistakes

  • Deleting before transferring a channel. You may lose control of something you spent years building.
  • Not exporting data first. Once the account is gone, so is your history.
  • Assuming messages vanish everywhere. Others may keep copies.
  • Forgetting the self-destruct setting. A long break can delete an account you meant to keep.
  • Following a "delete your account" link from a chat. That is a common scam route.
  • Leaving a paid subscription running. Cancel it through the store you used.

FAQ

Can I recover a deleted Telegram account?

No. Deletion is permanent. You can create a new account with the same number, but it starts empty.

Will my contacts be told I deleted my account?

Telegram does not send them a message, but your name will show as "Deleted Account" in their chats.

Do my messages in groups disappear?

They may remain in the group, shown as from a deleted account. Delete them yourself first if you want them gone.

What happens to my channel if I delete my account?

The channel does not automatically disappear, but you lose control of it. Transfer ownership or delete the channel before deleting your account.

How long until an inactive account self-destructs?

It depends on the period set in your account's self-destruct setting. Check and adjust it in your privacy or security settings.

Summary

Deleting a Telegram account removes your profile, cloud messages and contacts, and it cannot be undone. Other people may keep their copies of your chats, and channels you own carry on without you in control. Export your data, transfer or close your channels, cancel subscriptions, and only delete through Telegram's official route.
