How to Hide Your Phone Number on Telegram

Stop strangers in groups and chats from seeing your phone number, control who can find you by it, and use a username instead.

Privacy & SafetyHow to Hide Your Phone Number on Telegram

You can hide your phone number on Telegram in your Privacy and Security settings by setting who can see it to "Nobody" or "My Contacts". You can also limit who can find you by your number. Set a username so people can still reach you without ever needing your number.

This guide walks through each setting, explains what it does and does not hide, and covers a few situations people often miss.

Why hide your phone number?

Telegram needs a phone number to create an account, but other people usually do not need to see it. A visible number can lead to:

  • Spam calls and texts outside Telegram.
  • Strangers in large public groups adding you on other apps.
  • Your number being linked to your name, photo and other accounts.
  • Targeted scams that use your real details to seem convincing.

Hiding it costs nothing and does not stop anyone from messaging you through Telegram.

Step 1: Set who can see your phone number

The setting names below are typical, but they can change between app versions. If a label is different, look in your app's privacy settings.

  1. Open Telegram's Settings.
  2. Go to Privacy and Security.
  3. Tap Phone Number.
  4. Under who can see your number, choose Nobody or My Contacts.

"Nobody" is the most private. "My Contacts" lets people you have saved in your contacts see it. You can usually add exceptions, so specific people always or never see your number regardless of the main setting.

Step 2: Control who can find you by your number

When you set visibility to "Nobody", Telegram usually shows a second option about who can find you by your number.

  1. In the same Phone Number screen, look for the option about finding you by your number.
  2. Choose My Contacts if you do not want strangers who have your number to find your Telegram account.

This matters because someone who already has your number, for example from a leaked list, could otherwise type it in and see that you use Telegram.

Step 3: Set a username

A username lets people find and message you without knowing your phone number. It appears as an @name and as a t.me link.

  1. Go to Settings and open your profile or account details.
  2. Tap Username.
  3. Choose a name that is available and that you are happy to share publicly.

Share your username instead of your number. If you want more help, see our guide on how to change your Telegram username.

A username is public by design, so do not include personal details in it that you would rather keep private.

What hiding your number does not do

These settings are useful, but they have limits worth knowing.

  • People who already saved your number may still see it. If someone has your number in their phone's contacts and syncs contacts with Telegram, they already know it. The setting controls what Telegram shows; it cannot remove what someone already has.
  • It does not hide that you joined a group. Your name, photo and username can still appear in a group's member list. See who can see you in a channel or group.
  • It does not hide your profile photo or last seen time. Those have their own separate settings.

Other privacy settings worth checking

While you are in Privacy and Security, review these too. Each one is separate from the phone number setting.

  • Last seen and online: who can see when you were last active.
  • Profile photos: who can see your photo.
  • Bio: who can see the text on your profile, if your app shows this option.
  • Forwarded messages: whether your name links back to your account when someone forwards your message.
  • Calls: who can call you.
  • Groups and channels: who can add you to groups without asking.

Setting "Groups" so that only your contacts can add you is a good way to avoid being dropped into spam groups.

Joining groups without exposing your number

When you join a public group, other members can see your profile in the member list unless an admin has hidden the list. With your phone number set to "Nobody", they should not see your number.

Before joining a busy public group:

  1. Check your phone number setting is "Nobody" or "My Contacts".
  2. Make sure your profile photo and name are things you are comfortable sharing.
  3. Consider limiting who can see your last seen time.

What about the number you sign up with?

Telegram still needs a working number for sign-in. Some people prefer not to use their main personal number. Telegram supports anonymous numbers bought on Fragment, Telegram's marketplace for usernames and numbers, which can be used to sign up without a regular SIM card. Check Fragment and Telegram's help pages for how this currently works and what it costs before deciding.

Whatever number you use, keep control of it. If you lose access to the number, recovering your account becomes much harder. Turning on two-step verification with a recovery email helps protect you.

For channel owners

If you run a channel, your subscribers do not see your phone number or your personal profile just because you post. Posts appear under the channel's name.

Your personal account can still show up in places such as the channel's admin list or in comments you leave as yourself. If you want to stay low-profile:

  • Keep your phone number set to "Nobody".
  • Post as the channel rather than as yourself where your app allows it.
  • Use a separate contact username for business enquiries, and say so in your channel description.

Common mistakes

  • Changing only "who can see" and not "who can find me". Someone with your number may still be able to look you up.
  • Forgetting existing contacts. People who already have your number saved will still know it.
  • Putting your number in your bio or channel description. That undoes every privacy setting at once.
  • Using a username that reveals personal details. Usernames are public and searchable.
  • Leaving "who can add me to groups" open to everyone. This invites spam groups that expose your profile to strangers.
  • Losing access to your sign-up number. Keep it active, or recovery becomes much harder.

FAQ

Can people see my phone number if I join a Telegram group?

Not if your phone number is set to "Nobody", or to "My Contacts" and they are not in your contacts. They can still see your name, photo and username, subject to your other settings.

Can a Telegram channel admin see my phone number?

Channel admins do not see subscribers' phone numbers just because they subscribed. What they can see of your profile depends on your privacy settings.

Why can someone still see my number after I hid it?

They probably already have your number saved in their phone's contacts. Telegram cannot remove information someone already has.

Do I need a username to hide my number?

No, but it helps. Without a username, people who want to contact you may ask for your number instead.

Can I use Telegram without a phone number at all?

Telegram requires a number to sign up. One option is an anonymous number from Fragment. Check Telegram's current help pages for what is supported.

Summary

Open Privacy and Security, set your phone number to "Nobody" or "My Contacts", and limit who can find you by your number. Add a username so people can reach you without it, and review your photo, last seen and group settings while you are there. These few changes keep your number away from strangers without making you harder to reach. For a wider look at account safety, read Is Telegram safe?.
