How to set or change your Telegram username on phone and desktop, what makes a good one, and what happens to your old name and links.
You change your Telegram username in your account settings, by tapping the username field, typing a new one and saving it. Telegram checks right away whether the name is free and allowed. The change is instant, but your old username stops working and someone else can claim it.
This guide walks through the steps on each device, explains the rules a username has to follow, and covers what changing it means for people who already know your old one.
A username is a public handle that starts with @. It lets people find you in Telegram search and message you without knowing your phone number. It also gives you a short link in the form t.me/yourname.
A username is optional. You can use Telegram with only a phone number and a display name. Your display name is different: it is the name shown at the top of your chats, it does not have to be unique, and it cannot be searched in the same way.
Channels, public groups and bots also have usernames. The steps for those are slightly different, and they are covered further down.
The exact layout differs a little between Android and iPhone, and Telegram updates its apps often. The general path is the same.
The new name works immediately. People can now find you as @newname, and your t.me link changes with it.
If you want to stop being findable by username, clear the field and save it empty. People will then only be able to reach you if they have your number, share a group with you, or already have a chat with you. For more on what others can see, read who can see you in Telegram channels and groups.
Telegram Desktop and the web version follow the same idea.
The change syncs to all your devices because your account lives in Telegram's cloud.
Telegram enforces a few rules, and the app shows a message if you break one. In general:
Telegram can change these rules, so trust the message in the app over any list you read online. If the field turns red or shows a warning, the name is not allowed or not available.
Some short or popular usernames are sold as collectibles on Fragment, Telegram's own marketplace for usernames and numbers. Purchases there use TON. If a name you want shows as unavailable, it may be held as a collectible.
Buying a collectible username is optional and has its own risks and costs. Only use Fragment itself, never a third party who offers to "transfer" a name for you. We cover this in more detail in Telegram usernames on Fragment. Nothing here is financial advice.
This is the part people often forget.
Because the old name becomes free, think before giving up a name that many people know. A scammer could take it and pretend to be you.
For a public channel or public group, the username is the public link. You change it in the channel or group settings, usually under the section that controls whether it is public or private.
Only admins with the right permissions can do this. Changing a channel link has bigger effects than changing a personal username, because every post that shared the old link stops working. Read how to change a Telegram channel link before you do it.
If your channel is listed in a directory, update the listing too. On TGDirectory, owners can claim their listing and keep its details accurate. See how to claim your channel on TGDirectory.
A good username is easy to say, spell and remember. Some practical tips:
Before you save, say the name out loud. Ask whether someone hearing it could type it correctly. If you would need to spell it out, a simpler name may serve you better.
Telegram generally lets you change it whenever you like, as long as the new name is available and valid. If the app refuses a change, it will show the reason.
Telegram does not send a special announcement. People who look at your profile will see the new username. If you rely on people finding you by name, tell them yourself.
Only if nobody else has taken it. Once you release a name, it is free for anyone. If it is still available, you can set it again the normal way.
No. A username is optional. Without one, people mainly reach you through your phone number, shared groups or existing chats, depending on your privacy settings.
It usually breaks a rule: it starts with a number, uses a character that is not allowed, or is too short or too long. Try a simpler version using letters, numbers and underscores.
No. Each username is unique across Telegram, including channels, groups and bots.
To change your Telegram username, open Settings, tap the username field, type a new name and save it. The rules are simple and the app checks them for you. Before you switch, remember that your old name and links stop working at once and someone else can claim the old handle. Update your links, warn the people who matter, and choose a name that is short, clear and clearly yours.
