Telegram Account Banned: What It Means and How to Appeal

Work out whether your Telegram account is spam-limited, banned or just locked out, how to appeal each through official channels, and how to avoid scams posing as unban services.

Privacy & SafetyTelegram Account Banned: What It Means and How to Appeal

A "banned" Telegram account usually means one of two things: a spam limit, where the account still works but cannot message strangers or add people to groups, or a full ban, where the phone number can no longer log in. Limits are checked and appealed through Telegram's official @SpamBot; a full ban is appealed through Telegram's own support channels. Several other problems look like a ban but are not, so the first step is working out which situation you are actually in.

Which situation are you in?

The word "ban" gets used for very different problems. Each has a different cause and a different fix, so match your symptoms before doing anything else.

You can log in and read, but some actions fail. You cannot message people who are not your contacts, cannot add people to groups, or cannot post in public groups. This is a spam limit on your account. It is the most common case.

You can use Telegram normally, except in one group or channel. You cannot write there, or you were removed. That is a decision by that chat's admins, not by Telegram.

The login screen says your phone number is banned. This is an account-level ban. It is the most serious case and the hardest to reverse.

Telegram asks you to sign up as if you were new. Your old account may have been deleted, for example by the inactivity self-destruct setting. That is not a ban.

You were logged out and cannot get back in, or your password does not work. Someone may have taken over the account, or you may have lost access to your number. That is an account recovery problem.

A channel or bot shows a notice that it cannot be displayed. That is a restriction on the channel or bot, not on your account.

The sections below take each one in turn.

Why Telegram limits or bans accounts

Telegram does not publish a complete rulebook for its anti-spam systems, and it adjusts them over time. What is clear from its terms and its anti-spam help pages is the general shape: accounts are limited or banned for behaviour that harms other users, and reports from other users are a major signal.

Behaviour that commonly leads to limits:

  • Messaging many people who do not have you as a contact, especially with the same or similar text.
  • Being reported as spam by the people you messaged. When a stranger receives an unwanted message, Telegram offers them a button to report it.
  • Adding many people to groups or channels without their asking, or inviting people in bulk.
  • Posting the same message or link in many groups, particularly promotional links.
  • Joining large numbers of groups quickly and writing in all of them.
  • Using automation that sends messages or actions far faster or more regularly than a person could.

Behaviour that can lead to a full ban:

  • Scams, fraud and impersonation.
  • Sharing illegal content.
  • Repeated or severe spam after earlier limits.
  • Breaking Telegram's terms of service in other serious ways.

Sometimes a genuine user gets caught too. A small business owner who messages every customer from a list, or a group admin who adds old classmates one by one, can look like a spammer to an automatic system. That is exactly what the appeal process is for.

Situation 1: Your account is spam-limited

A spam limit restricts what you can do towards people who have not chosen to talk to you. It does not delete your account, your chats or your contacts.

What a limited account usually cannot do

  • Send messages to people who do not have you as a contact.
  • Add people to groups or channels.
  • Write in some public groups, including comment sections, depending on the chat.
  • Create new public groups or channels in some cases.

What it usually can still do: read everything, chat with existing contacts and with people who message you first, and use groups where you are already active. The exact restrictions can change, so the bot's message is the authority on your account.

How to check whether you are limited

Telegram runs an official bot, @SpamBot, that reports your account's status.

  1. Open Telegram search and type SpamBot.
  2. Open the official @SpamBot. Check the username carefully; copycat accounts use similar names.
  3. Tap Start.
  4. Read the reply. It tells you whether your account is free of limits, or limited, and may say until when.

If it says your account is not limited, the problem is somewhere else. Look at the other situations in this guide.

How to appeal a spam limit

If the bot says you are limited and you believe that is a mistake, it offers a way to ask for a review.

  1. In the chat with @SpamBot, choose the option saying the limit is a mistake or that you want to appeal. The exact wording varies.
  2. Answer its questions honestly. It may ask whether you sent unsolicited messages.
  3. Write a short explanation when asked. Keep it factual and calm.
  4. Submit, and then wait. Do not send the appeal repeatedly.

What to write in an appeal

Moderators read many appeals. A clear one helps. A good appeal says who you are in general terms, what you use Telegram for, what probably triggered the limit, and what you will do differently.

Example appeal (illustrative): "I use Telegram to talk with family and to run a small cooking group. Yesterday I added about thirty old classmates to a reunion group without asking them first, and some probably reported it. I did not mean to spam. From now on I will share an invite link instead of adding people. Please review the limit on my account."

What to avoid:

  • Demanding, threatening or insulting language.
  • Claiming you did nothing when you know what triggered it.
  • Pasting long legal texts or copying a template from the internet.
  • Including your login code or password. The bot never needs them.

How long a limit lasts

Telegram decides. Some limits are temporary and lift on their own after a period, which @SpamBot may tell you. Others stay until an appeal is reviewed. There is no official timeline to promise, so treat any website that gives an exact number of days with caution.

While you wait, avoid the behaviour that caused the limit. Messaging strangers again during a limit is the surest way to make it last longer.

What a limit does not affect

A spam limit is narrower than it feels. It does not delete your messages, contacts or media, does not remove you from groups you are in, and does not stop people from messaging you. Channels and groups you own keep running, and you can usually still post in your own channels. People you write to are not told that your account is limited; your messages to non-contacts simply fail on your side.

That matters for how you react. There is no need to rush into a new account or move your channels elsewhere. Appeal, change the behaviour that caused it, and carry on with the people who already talk to you.

What a limit means for people you want to reach

If you need to reach someone who has not added you as a contact, ask a mutual contact to pass on your username, or ask the person to message you first. Once they write to you, you can reply normally.

If you think you were reported unfairly

Reports are a signal, not a verdict, but a burst of them can still lead to a limit. That can happen after an argument in a large group, or when a post annoys a lot of people at once.

If you believe that is what happened:

  1. Do not retaliate by reporting the other people back. It does not help your case.
  2. Say what happened in your appeal, briefly and without accusations. For example, that you disagreed with others in a group and were reported afterwards, but did not send spam.
  3. Leave chats where the conflict continues, at least until the limit is reviewed.
  4. If you run the group where it happened, write clear rules so disagreements are handled by admins rather than by mass reporting.

Telegram does not explain its decisions in detail, and you will not be told who reported you. A calm, factual appeal is the only route.

Situation 2: You were banned from one group or channel

If Telegram works everywhere except one chat, the admins of that chat removed or restricted you. Telegram is not involved.

Signs it is a group ban

  • One group shows that you cannot send messages, or it disappeared from your chat list.
  • A public group shows a join button again, but joining fails.
  • Messages you post are deleted straight away, and only in that group.

Getting back into the group

  1. Read the group's rules if you can still see them, to understand what may have triggered it.
  2. Contact an admin privately, if their username is public, and ask politely.
  3. Explain what happened and whether you will follow the rules in future.
  4. Accept their decision. Each group sets its own rules, and Telegram does not review bans inside groups.

If you run a group yourself and want to handle bans fairly, our guide on handling conflicts and bans in Telegram groups covers it from the admin side.

Situation 3: Your phone number is banned

This is a full account ban. When you try to log in, Telegram tells you the phone number is banned, or refuses to send a code with a message about the number.

What it means

Telegram has decided that the account associated with this number broke its rules seriously or repeatedly. The account cannot be used. Creating a new account with the same number is usually not possible while the ban is in place.

How to appeal

Telegram does not run a public appeal form specifically for banned numbers that works in every case, and support options can change. These are the official routes:

  1. The option on the login screen. When Telegram shows the banned message, it may offer a way to contact support or send an email from that screen. Use it if it is there.
  2. Telegram's support page. Telegram's official website has a support section with a contact option. Check telegram.org for the current way to reach support.
  3. A friend's in-app support. Telegram's settings include an option to ask a question, which connects to Telegram's support volunteers. A trusted friend can use it on your behalf, explaining that your number is banned and asking how to appeal. Never give that friend your login code.

When you write, include:

  • Your phone number in full international format, with the country code.
  • A short, honest explanation of how you use Telegram.
  • If you know what triggered it, say so and say what you will change.
  • The language you are most comfortable with, if not English.

Then wait. Send one clear request rather than many; repeated messages do not move you up a queue. Telegram does not promise to reply to every request or to reverse bans.

If the ban is not lifted

Be realistic. A full ban for scams, illegal content or repeated spam is unlikely to be reversed. If your account mattered for a business or a channel, the lesson for the future is to keep a second admin on everything you run, which is covered further down.

Situation 4: Your account was deleted, not banned

Telegram deletes accounts that have been inactive for a set period. You choose that period in the privacy and security settings, under the option for deleting your account if you are away. If you did not open Telegram on any device for longer than that, the account and its cloud messages were deleted.

Signs the account was deleted

  • Telegram asks you to sign up, rather than saying the number is banned.
  • Your old contacts see you as a new account if you register again.
  • Your chats and groups are gone.

Starting again after deletion

You cannot appeal this, because it is a setting working as designed, and deleted accounts cannot be restored. You can register again with the same number and start fresh. Our guide on what happens when you delete a Telegram account explains what is lost and what other people still see.

To avoid it in future, set a longer period in the privacy settings and open Telegram at least occasionally on one device.

Situation 5: You were logged out or locked out

Being unable to log in is not always a ban. Common causes:

  • Someone else took over the account. A scammer obtained your login code, logged in, and may have set a two-step verification password you do not know.
  • You lost access to your phone number. Your SIM changed, the number was recycled, or you are abroad without it.
  • You forgot your two-step verification password. Telegram's password reset options depend on whether you set a recovery email.

Signs that point to a takeover rather than a ban: you received a login code you did not ask for, contacts say you sent them odd messages or links, or Telegram asks for a two-step verification password you never set. If you are still logged in on any device, act from there first:

  1. Open the active sessions list in the privacy and security settings and end every session you do not recognise.
  2. Set or change your two-step verification password, and add a recovery email you control.
  3. Warn your contacts not to act on recent messages from you.

None of these are bans, and @SpamBot will not help. Follow our guide on recovering a hacked Telegram account, and read why you should never share your Telegram login code to understand how most takeovers happen.

Situation 6: A channel or bot is restricted, not you

Sometimes a channel or bot shows a notice that it cannot be displayed, or disappears from search. That is a restriction on that channel or bot, usually for copyright, legal or safety reasons, or because of rules for apps distributed through certain app stores. Your account is fine.

If you own the channel, see our guide on why Telegram channels get banned and how to appeal.

Situation 7: The login code never arrives

A missing login code feels like a ban, but it usually is not. Telegram does not tell banned numbers that a code is on its way; it says the number is banned.

Where the code actually goes

If you are already logged in to Telegram on another device, such as a computer or tablet, Telegram usually sends the login code there as a Telegram message first, not by SMS. People waiting for a text message often miss it.

Steps to try

  1. Check every device where you might still be logged in, including Telegram Desktop and any browser with Telegram Web open. Look for a message from Telegram's official service account.
  2. Wait a little before asking again. Requesting codes repeatedly can trigger a temporary wait before Telegram sends another.
  3. If you are not logged in anywhere, look on the login screen for an option to receive the code by SMS or a call, where offered.
  4. Check that your phone can receive texts at all: signal, roaming settings, and whether your carrier blocks short-code messages.
  5. Make sure you typed the number with the correct country code.

If the code still does not come

If Telegram offers no SMS option and you have no logged-in device, the login screen may provide a support option. A code problem is not a reason to try third-party "code receiving" websites, which expose your number and code to strangers.

Whatever happens, never forward a login code to anyone. Telegram's own warning in the code message says the same. A person who asks for it, even if they claim to be helping you log in, can take your account.

Beware of "unban" scams

People who have just lost access are a favourite target for scammers. Watch for these patterns:

  • Accounts posing as Telegram support that message you first. Telegram's support does not cold-message users offering to fix bans.
  • Paid "unban services" advertised in groups or on websites. Nobody outside Telegram can lift a limit or ban. Paying them loses your money and often your account.
  • Requests for your login code or password. Anyone asking for these is trying to take your account. No legitimate appeal needs them.
  • Fake bots with names close to @SpamBot. Check the exact username, and open it from Telegram search rather than from a link someone sent you.
  • Links to "verify your account" on websites that ask for your phone number and code.

Our guide on how to spot Telegram scams covers these in more depth. If you meet one, report the account to Telegram from its profile.

If you run channels or groups: protect them from a ban

If your personal account is limited, you can usually still manage your channels and groups. If it is banned outright, everything you run with that account may be stranded. A little preparation prevents that.

  1. Add a trusted second admin to every channel and group you own, with the rights needed to keep it running. Our guide on adding admins to a Telegram channel explains the rights.
  2. Know how ownership transfer works before you need it, so a trusted person can take over if you lose access.
  3. Keep your main account clean. Do promotion through methods people opt into, such as invite links, rather than mass messaging from the account that owns your channels.
  4. Turn on two-step verification so a takeover cannot be followed by your account being used for spam.

Checklist before you appeal

Run through this before sending anything, so your appeal goes to the right place and says the right things.

  • You have confirmed which situation you are in, using the symptoms at the top of this guide.
  • For a limit, you checked @SpamBot from Telegram search, not from a link.
  • You know roughly what triggered it: bulk messages, mass invites, repeated links, automation.
  • You have stopped that behaviour, and can say so.
  • Your explanation is short, honest and polite, in your own words.
  • You have not included your login code, password or any private documents.
  • You are sending one request, not several.
  • For a banned number, you have the number written in full international format.

Contacting customers without risking a limit

Businesses get limited more than most, usually because they treat Telegram like an email list. Telegram is built so that people opt in to hearing from you. Working with that design avoids limits entirely.

  • Give customers a link to start the chat. A link to your public username lets a customer open a chat with you. Once they write first, you can reply freely.
  • Use a channel for announcements. People subscribe if they want updates, and you never need to message them individually.
  • Use a bot for orders or support. Bots can only message people who have started them, which matches what anti-spam systems expect. Our guide on Telegram customer support for business covers setups.
  • Share your link where customers already are. Receipts, your website, packaging and email signatures all work.

The result is a list of people who chose to hear from you, which is worth more than a list that reports you.

How to avoid being limited again

Most limits are triggered by a pattern of unwanted contact. These habits keep your account in the clear:

  • Let people come to you. Share an invite link instead of adding people to groups.
  • Do not cold-message strangers in bulk, even with a friendly message.
  • Vary nothing to get around filters. Changing a word in a copied message to avoid detection is exactly what spam looks like.
  • Post links in groups only where the rules allow them, and not in many groups at once.
  • Avoid unofficial tools that automate messages, invites or joins.
  • Be careful with brand-new accounts. A new account that immediately messages many strangers looks like a spam account, whatever the intent.
  • Ask before adding. If someone is your contact but has not agreed to join a group, ask first.

A worked example

Example (illustrative): Sam opens an online shop and creates a Telegram channel. To get started, Sam messages two hundred people from an old customer list, all with the same text and link. Many of them have never talked to Sam on Telegram, and some report the message. The next day, Sam cannot message anyone outside their contacts.

Sam checks @SpamBot, which confirms a limit. Sam appeals honestly, explaining the message went to former customers and that it will not happen again. While waiting, Sam shares the channel link on the shop's receipts and website instead, so customers join only if they want to. That approach does not risk a limit, and the subscribers it brings are actually interested.

Common mistakes

  • Treating every problem as a ban. A deleted account, a hacked account and a group ban all need different fixes. Identify your situation first.
  • Appealing over and over. Repeated appeals do not speed anything up.
  • Creating new accounts to get around a limit. New accounts used for the same behaviour are limited quickly, and evading enforcement can make things worse.
  • Paying an unban service. Only Telegram can lift a limit or ban.
  • Sharing your login code with "support". This is the most common way accounts are stolen.
  • Running a business channel from one account with no backup admin. One ban can strand the whole channel.

FAQ

How do I know if my Telegram account is limited?

Open the official @SpamBot from Telegram search and tap Start. It tells you whether your account has any limits and, in some cases, when they end.

Can a limited account still read messages?

Yes. A spam limit restricts contacting people who have not chosen to talk to you. You can usually still read chats, talk with contacts and use groups you are already in.

How long does a Telegram ban last?

It depends on the type. Some spam limits are temporary and lift on their own; others last until an appeal is reviewed. A full ban on a phone number is generally permanent unless Telegram reverses it after an appeal.

Can I use the same phone number for a new account after a ban?

Usually not while the number is banned. If your account was deleted for inactivity rather than banned, you can register again with the same number.

Will Telegram tell me why my account was banned?

Telegram rarely gives detailed reasons. The bot or ban message may give a general category. Think honestly about recent activity, such as bulk messages or mass invites, to understand what likely triggered it.

Is there anyone who can unban my account for a fee?

No. Only Telegram can lift limits or bans, and it does not charge for appeals. Anyone offering a paid unban is a scammer.

Summary

First identify what kind of "ban" you have. If you can log in but cannot message strangers or add people to groups, check and appeal with the official @SpamBot. If one group blocked you, talk to its admins. If the login screen says the number is banned, use the support option shown there or Telegram's official support channels, with one clear, honest request. An account that asks you to sign up again was probably deleted for inactivity, and being locked out is a recovery problem, not a ban. Ignore anyone offering paid unbans, never share your login code, and keep a second admin on every channel you run.
