Telegram's per-file size limit for free and Premium users, how photos and videos are compressed, the separate limits for bots, and what to do when a file is too big.
Telegram lets every user send files of up to 2 GB each, and Telegram Premium raises that to 4 GB per file. Anyone can download the larger files Premium users send, and Telegram's cloud storage has no overall cap, so the limit is per file, not per account. Bots using Telegram's standard Bot API have much smaller limits, which is a common source of confusion.
This guide explains each limit, how compression affects photos and videos, and how to deal with a file that is too large.
Telegram changes features from time to time, so if a number matters for something important, check Telegram's own FAQ or the app's message when you try to send.
The limit applies to each individual file in a message. You can send as many files as you like, each up to the limit, and they all stay in Telegram's cloud. A folder of ten 1 GB videos is fine, sent as ten files. A single 5 GB video is not, on any account, until it is split or compressed.
The limit is the same in private chats, groups and channels. If you run a channel, you can post a large file just as you would in a chat, and subscribers can download it.
When you send a picture as a photo, Telegram compresses it to make it load quickly. That is usually fine for casual sharing but softens detail and can change colours slightly.
To keep the original quality, send the image as a file instead. The exact option differs by app:
A photo sent as a file arrives exactly as it was, with its full resolution, and counts against the same per-file limit as any other file.
Photographers, designers and anyone sharing screenshots with small text should send as files. For everyday pictures, normal photo sending is faster for everyone.
Videos follow the same logic. Sent as a video, a clip can be compressed, and many apps let you choose the quality before sending. Sent as a file, it arrives unchanged.
Things to know:
If a video will not play after sending, see Telegram videos not playing.
Premium's file-related benefits, as Telegram describes them, include:
Premium does not change what non-Premium users can download: a free user can receive and download a 4 GB file from a Premium user. Premium is only needed by the person uploading.
If large uploads are your main reason to consider Premium, weigh it against compressing or splitting files, which is free. See is Telegram Premium worth it for channel owners for the other benefits.
Bots are a separate case. A bot talking to Telegram through the standard cloud Bot API has much lower limits than a person using the app. According to Telegram's bot documentation:
Developers who need more can run their own Bot API server, which Telegram's documentation says raises the upload limit to 2000 MB and removes the download limit.
Why this matters to ordinary users: if a bot tells you a file is "too large", it is usually the bot's limit, not yours. You can still send that file directly in a chat or channel. For more on bots, see what are Telegram bots.
Telegram's cloud storage is unlimited, but your phone's storage is not. Files you open are saved to your device's cache, and this can grow large over time, especially if you are in busy groups.
To keep it under control:
Clearing the cache does not delete files from Telegram's cloud. You can download them again later from the chat. See how to clear the Telegram cache for step-by-step instructions.
One exception: files in secret chats are not stored in the cloud in the same way, so deleting them from the device can mean they are gone.
If Telegram says a file is too big, you have several options.
Archive tools on most computers can split one large archive into several parts of a size you choose. Pick a part size safely below the limit, send each part, and the recipient joins them with the same kind of tool. This works for any file type.
Example (illustration only): a 5 GB backup on a free account could be split into three parts of under 2 GB each. The recipient downloads all three and opens the first part with the archive tool, which reads the others automatically.
If you regularly send files between 2 GB and 4 GB, Premium removes the need to split them. It does not help above 4 GB.
For very large files, upload to a storage service you trust and send the link. Only send links to files you own or have the right to share.
Large uploads take time and depend on your connection. Keep the app open, avoid switching networks, and check that your device is not putting the app to sleep to save battery. If uploads are always slow, see Telegram slow download speed; many of the same causes apply to uploads.
Check that your phone has enough free storage, since apps sometimes need temporary space to prepare a file. Update the app. Try from another device, such as the desktop app.
Telegram delivers the file, but opening it needs a suitable app on the recipient's device. A video in an unusual format may need a different player.
If it was sent as a photo or video rather than a file, it was compressed. Ask the sender to resend it as a file.
Up to 2 GB per file for all users, and up to 4 GB per file with Telegram Premium.
Telegram describes its cloud storage as unlimited. The limit is on each file, not on how much you store.
Yes. Telegram says any user can download large files uploaded by Premium users.
Bots using the standard Bot API can only upload files up to 50 MB and download files up to 20 MB. Send the file directly in a chat instead, or ask the bot's developer about the limit.
Yes. Photos and videos sent as files arrive unchanged. Sent as normal photos or videos, they may be compressed.
Telegram deletes accounts that stay inactive for a long period, along with their cloud data. You can see and change how long that period is in the app's privacy or account settings. Using Telegram regularly keeps your files, and nothing is deleted just because a file is old.
Every Telegram user can send files of up to 2 GB each, Premium raises that to 4 GB, and the cloud has no total storage cap. Photos and videos sent normally are compressed; send them as files to keep the original. Bots on the standard Bot API are limited to much smaller files. When a file is too big, compress it, split it into parts, upgrade if it is between 2 and 4 GB, or share a link to a copy you have the right to share.
