Telegram Group vs Supergroup vs Gigagroup

What the terms group, supergroup and gigagroup mean on Telegram today, how they differ, and which setup suits your community as it grows.

ComparisonsTelegram Group vs Supergroup vs Gigagroup

On Telegram today, "group" is the name you see in the app for any shared chat. "Supergroup" is an older term for the more capable kind of group, which Telegram now upgrades to quietly in the background. "Gigagroup" is an informal name for a broadcast group, a mode for very large groups in which only admins can post.

So you rarely choose between them up front. You create a group, and Telegram handles the technical type as you add members and features. This guide explains what each term means and when the differences matter.

Where the three names come from

Basic groups

In earlier versions of Telegram, a new group started as a basic group. Basic groups were meant for friends, family and small teams, with simpler admin tools.

Supergroups

A supergroup was the upgraded form, designed for larger communities. It added features such as detailed admin permissions, a public username and link, pinned messages for everyone, slow mode and a visible message history for new members. Telegram has long upgraded basic groups to supergroups automatically, for example when a group grows or when an admin turns on a feature that needs the upgrade.

In current apps you will usually just see the word "group". The word supergroup still appears in developer documentation, in bot tools and in older guides. Treat it as the technical name for a full-featured group.

Gigagroups, or broadcast groups

"Gigagroup" is a nickname, not a button in the app. It refers to a broadcast group: a mode Telegram introduced for groups that reach the member limit. Ordinary groups can have up to 200,000 members. A broadcast group lets a community keep growing beyond that, but only admins can send messages; members read, and react where reactions are allowed. Check Telegram's help pages for the current rules, including whether the change can be undone.

Comparing the three

Who can post

  • Group (basic or supergroup): every member can post, subject to the permissions admins set.
  • Broadcast group: only admins post. Members read.

Size

  • Group: up to 200,000 members.
  • Broadcast group: made for communities that have reached that limit and want to keep growing. Check Telegram's help pages for current details.

Admin tools

  • Basic group (older form): simple admin rights.
  • Supergroup: detailed admin permissions, slow mode, member restrictions, topics, join requests and moderation bots. See Telegram slow mode and member restrictions.
  • Broadcast group: admin-only posting, so moderation is mostly about controlling who becomes an admin.

Conversation

  • Group: a real conversation. Members talk with each other and with admins.
  • Broadcast group: conversation stops, because members cannot post. It behaves much like a channel, while keeping the existing members and history.

How a broadcast group compares with a channel

A broadcast group and a channel both let admins speak to a large audience. The differences matter if you are deciding which to use:

  • Channel: built for broadcasting from the start, with unlimited subscribers, post view counts, signed posts, statistics for eligible channels and optional comments through a linked group.
  • Broadcast group: starts life as a group, so it keeps the group's members and history. It is mainly a way out for a group that has outgrown the member limit.

If you are starting fresh and plan to broadcast, a channel is usually the cleaner choice. Our guide to Telegram channel vs group explains when each fits.

Which setup should you use?

A normal group

Use a group when members need to talk: support communities, study groups, hobby chats, local groups and teams. Turn on topics if the group covers several subjects. See how to use topics in Telegram groups.

A channel plus a linked group

Use this when you broadcast news or content and also want discussion. The channel carries the posts, and the linked group holds comments and chat. Many large communities use this setup.

A broadcast group

Consider this only when an existing group is close to the 200,000-member limit and you would rather keep everyone in one place than move to a channel. Remember that members lose the ability to post.

Steps for a group that is getting very large

  1. Check your current member count and growth in the group's info page.
  2. Decide what members value most: talking to each other, or reading admin updates.
  3. If conversation matters, consider splitting into topics or regional groups, and add a channel for announcements.
  4. If announcements matter most, consider creating a channel and inviting members to it.
  5. If you choose a broadcast group, read Telegram's current help pages first, warn members in advance and explain where discussion will move.
  6. Set up moderation early. Our guide on how to moderate a large Telegram group helps.

Signs your group needs a different setup

  • Important admin messages get lost among member chatter.
  • The same questions are asked again and again in the main chat.
  • New members leave soon after joining because the chat moves too fast.
  • Admins spend most of their time removing spam rather than helping members.

Each sign points to a change: a separate announcement channel, topics, slow mode or stronger join controls. Fix the structure before the group gets bigger.

Common mistakes

  • Searching the app for a "supergroup" or "gigagroup" button. These are technical or informal names. In the app you create a group, and conversion options appear when relevant.
  • Converting to a broadcast group without warning. Members suddenly cannot post. Tell them first and give them somewhere else to talk.
  • Using a group when a channel fits. If only admins post, a channel gives you view counts and cleaner tools.
  • Ignoring spam until it is too late. Large groups attract spam bots.
  • Trusting old guides blindly. Telegram has changed how groups work over the years. Check inside the app.

TGDirectory accepts channels, groups and bots. Listing is free, and a person reviews every submission before it appears. You can submit your group or channel and choose the right category so members can find it.

FAQ

Is there still a difference between a group and a supergroup?

Technically, yes, but the app handles it for you. Most groups you meet today are supergroups behind the scenes, and Telegram simply calls them groups.

How many members can a Telegram group have?

Up to 200,000 members. Groups that reach that limit can be turned into broadcast groups where only admins post.

Can members talk in a gigagroup?

No. In a broadcast group, only admins can send messages. Members can read and react where allowed.

Should I use a broadcast group or a channel?

For a new audience, a channel is usually better. A broadcast group mainly helps an existing large group keep its members and history when it reaches the limit.

Can I add topics to a group?

Yes. Topics split a group into separate threads. They work best in active groups with several clear subjects.

Summary

"Group" is what you see in the app. "Supergroup" is the technical name for a full-featured group that Telegram upgrades to automatically. "Gigagroup" is a nickname for a broadcast group, a mode for groups at the 200,000-member limit where only admins post. Start with a group for conversation or a channel for broadcasting, combine them when you need both, and check Telegram's help pages before converting anything.
