Add and switch between several Telegram accounts on Android, iPhone, desktop and web, keep work and personal apart, and avoid the mistakes that link or lose them.
You can use several Telegram accounts in the official app by adding them under your profile and switching with a tap; each account needs its own phone number. The desktop app works the same way, and on the web you can use separate browser profiles. The real work is keeping the accounts properly separate, so a work contact never sees your personal profile and a lost number never costs you an account.
This guide covers adding and switching accounts on every platform, getting a second number, separating privacy settings and notifications, and using a second account as a safety net for a channel you run.
A Telegram account is tied to a phone number. That number is how you sign up, how you receive login codes and, by default, how people who have your number in their contacts find you. Two accounts therefore means two numbers.
It is worth separating two ideas that are often confused:
If all you want is Telegram on your computer as well as your phone, you need the first, and our guide to Telegram on desktop and web covers it. This guide is about the second.
Telegram's terms do not allow using accounts to spam, to dodge a ban or to fake engagement. Multiple accounts for legitimate separation are normal; dozens of accounts used to inflate views or message strangers are what gets accounts banned. If you are considering buying subscribers or running fake accounts for a channel, read why bought Telegram subscribers hurt first.
The official apps let you add a small number of accounts and switch between them. At the time of writing, Telegram's apps allow three accounts per app, and Telegram Premium raises that by one. Telegram changes limits from time to time, so the reliable check is in the app: when you reach the limit, the option to add another account is replaced by a prompt about the limit.
If you need more than the app allows, you can use another device, the desktop app (which keeps its own account list), or the web version in a separate browser profile.
Every account needs a number that can receive Telegram's login code at least once, and ideally for as long as you use the account. The options, from most to least robust:
Whatever number you use, set a two-step verification password and a recovery email on every account. With that password in place, a login code alone is not enough to get in, which protects you if the number ever ends up with someone else.
On iOS you can usually switch accounts quickly by pressing and holding the Settings tab at the bottom of the screen. A list of your accounts pops up.
The desktop app keeps its own list. Accounts added on your phone do not appear on the desktop automatically, and the reverse is also true.
The web versions are built around one account per browser session. To use two accounts in a browser:
A private or incognito window also works but logs you out when you close it.
Switching is instant on all platforms. Telegram keeps every account connected in the background, so messages arrive for all of them, not just the one on screen.
When a message arrives for an inactive account, the notification usually shows which account it is for. Tapping it switches to that account and opens the chat.
The most common slip with multiple accounts is posting from the wrong one. Make the difference obvious at a glance:
Adding a second account is easy. Making sure it does not leak back to the first takes a few deliberate settings. Each account has its own privacy settings, so you must set them on each one.
By default, Telegram can upload your phone's contact list to an account so it can show which of your contacts use Telegram. If both accounts sync the same phone contacts, everyone in your address book may be told that "your" new account has joined Telegram, and may see it in their contacts.
Do this before or straight after adding the account. Our guide on stopping "contact joined Telegram" notices explains the other side of this.
In the second account's privacy settings, set phone number visibility to "Nobody", and set who can find you by your number to "My Contacts" where the option exists. Then people need your username, not your number, to reach that account. See how to hide your phone number on Telegram for every related setting.
Do not reuse your main username with a number added. Choose a username, name and photo that fit the purpose of the account. A business account can use your company name. A private account for public groups might use a first name only.
Last seen, profile photo, bio, forwarded messages, calls and groups are all set per account. Go through them on the second account rather than assuming it copied the first.
Joining the same small groups from both accounts makes the link obvious to anyone who looks at member lists. If separation matters, keep each group on one account.
Because all accounts stay connected, you can get notifications from all of them. That is usually what you want, but not always.
A worked example: Priya has a personal account and a shop account. In the evening she switches to her personal account and turns off notifications from other accounts, so customer messages wait until morning. On weekdays at 9:00 she switches back and turns them on again. No messages are lost; she just chooses when they interrupt her.
If notifications from one account stop arriving at all, see our troubleshooting guide on Telegram notifications not working.
The local passcode lock protects the app on that device. With several accounts, check how your version applies it. On many versions the passcode guards the whole app, so anyone who opens Telegram on your device must enter it before seeing any account. Set it in each account's privacy and security settings if your version asks per account.
Two-step verification is per account, and it is the single most important setting here. Without it, anyone who receives a login code for that number can log in. With it, they also need your password.
Each account has its own list of active sessions in privacy and security settings. Check both lists now and then. A session you do not recognise should be ended at once. If an account has already been taken over, our guide on recovering a hacked Telegram account walks through what to do.
If you own a Telegram channel or group, losing your account usually means losing the channel too. A second account you control is a cheap insurance policy.
Telegram also has rules about what happens to ownership when an owner's account disappears, but relying on them is a gamble. A trusted backup admin you control is far more predictable.
A second account is also the simplest way to test what readers experience. Join your own channel from it and check:
Removing an account from an app is simply logging out of it on that device.
Logging out does not delete the account. Its chats remain in Telegram's cloud and return when you log in again, except secret chats, which only ever lived on that device. Deleting an account is a completely different, permanent action. Read what happens when you delete a Telegram account before you ever choose it.
Some people prefer one account per device: a work phone and a personal phone. This gives the strongest separation, because nothing is shared, not even the notification settings or the app passcode.
Some Android phones also offer a "dual apps" or "app clone" feature that runs a second copy of an app. Telegram's built-in account switching makes this unnecessary for most people, and a cloned copy can behave unpredictably with notifications. The built-in option is the better default.
Third-party Telegram apps sometimes advertise more accounts. Be careful: any app you log in to has full access to your account. Read our guide to third-party Telegram clients before trusting one with an account.
Run through this list once, straight after adding the account. Every item is a setting that is per account, so none of it is inherited from your main one.
Ten minutes here saves the two common disasters: an address book that suddenly knows about your private account, and a backup account that is deleted for inactivity just when you need it.
If the number already has a Telegram account logged in somewhere, Telegram usually sends the code inside Telegram, to that other device, not by SMS. Look in the chat from Telegram on the phone or computer where the account is active. If there is no such device, wait for the option to receive the code by SMS or a call, which the login screen offers after a short delay.
If nothing arrives at all, the cause is often the number itself: a virtual number that cannot receive short codes, a SIM without signal, or a carrier blocking messages from short senders. Our full guide on Telegram not sending the login code goes through each cause.
Requesting codes again and again triggers a temporary block on that number. The wait can be long. Stop requesting codes and try again later; repeated attempts can extend the wait. See Telegram "too many attempts" for what the different messages mean.
If the number was used for Telegram before, by you or by a previous owner of a recycled number, entering it logs you in to that existing account, as long as you can pass any two-step password on it. If you hit a password prompt you do not know, the account belongs to someone else or to an old you. Do not try to reset it unless it is genuinely yours. Use a different number.
You have probably reached the number of accounts the app allows. Remove one by logging out, or use the desktop app or another device for the extra account.
A number previously used for spam may be blocked from signing up. Telegram's support can review a ban you believe is a mistake, but a recycled number with a bad history is usually not worth the fight. See our guide on banned Telegram accounts for the appeal routes.
Sometimes the issue is not adding an account but keeping one alive when its number changes, for example when a work phone is returned. Telegram has a built-in way to change the number on an account while keeping all chats, contacts and channels.
Telegram may notify people who have your old number saved, depending on the options you choose. If the account is meant to stay private, check those options before confirming.
Do this before you lose the old number, not after. Changing the number needs you to be logged in, and logging in on a new device later may need the old number.
A related point: if a new number you bought already has a Telegram account attached to it from a previous owner, you cannot simply move your account onto it. The existing account occupies that number until it is changed or deleted.
Multiple accounts are often a business question in disguise. The right structure depends on how many people answer messages.
A freelancer or shop owner with personal and business accounts in one app is the classic case, and everything above applies. If you use Telegram's Business features, such as away messages and quick replies, set them up on the business account only. Our guide to Telegram quick replies and away messages explains those tools.
A small team can log in to the same support account on several devices. Everyone sees the same chats and replies come from one name, which is what customers expect. The downsides are that you cannot tell who sent which reply, and anyone with access can change settings or log the others out. Keep the two-step password with one owner, and review active sessions whenever someone leaves the team.
For larger teams, individual accounts are cleaner. Customers can be routed to a group or a bot, and each staff member answers under their own name. Access is removed by taking someone out of the group, not by changing a shared password. Our guide to customer support on Telegram compares these setups in more depth.
No. Each account is tied to one number. If you want two identities, you need two numbers. You can, however, use one account on several devices at the same time.
They can, if contact sync is on for that account and they have your second number saved, or if Telegram shows a "joined Telegram" notice. Turn off contact sync on the new account and hide your number to reduce this.
No. The free app supports several accounts. Premium raises the number you can add to one app, according to Telegram at the time of writing. Check the account list in your app for the current limit.
Yes, by default. Telegram keeps every added account connected, so notifications arrive for all of them. You can turn off notifications from inactive accounts in notification settings.
You can stay logged in on devices where the account is already active. To log in on a new device you will need either the number or another logged-in device to receive the code, plus your two-step password. Move the account to a number you control as soon as you know the old one is going.
No. Accounts cannot be merged. You can forward chats or files from one to the other, or export chat history from the desktop app, but the accounts stay separate.
Telegram lets you add several accounts to one app and switch instantly, each with its own number, chats and settings. Use a number you control for every account, never a public SMS site. On each new account, turn off contact sync, hide your number, choose a distinct profile and turn on two-step verification. Use themes and photos to tell accounts apart, decide whether inactive accounts may notify you, and consider a second account as a backup admin for any channel you run.
