Telegram Notifications Not Working: Fixes for iPhone and Android

A step-by-step way to find why Telegram notifications are silent or late on iPhone and Android, from muted chats and Focus modes to battery savers and push services.

Getting StartedTelegram Notifications Not Working: Fixes for iPhone and Android

When Telegram notifications stop, the cause is almost always one of three layers: a setting inside Telegram (a muted chat or a switched-off category), a setting on your phone (notification permission, Focus or Do Not Disturb, battery saving), or the connection that delivers notifications. Check them in that order and you will usually find the culprit in a few minutes. Android phones have one extra common cause: aggressive battery management that stops Telegram from running in the background.

This guide gives a quick test to narrow things down, then works through each cause with its own fix, separately for iPhone and Android where they differ.

How Telegram notifications reach your phone

Understanding the path helps you fix it. When someone messages you, Telegram's servers send a push notification through the phone maker's push service: Apple's on iPhone, and Google's on most Android phones. Your phone's operating system decides whether to show it, based on your settings. Telegram itself also decides, based on which chats you muted and which categories you enabled.

So a notification can be stopped in three places:

  • Telegram's settings, such as a muted chat or a disabled category.
  • The phone's settings, such as permissions, Focus modes, Do Not Disturb or battery restrictions.
  • The delivery path, such as a poor connection, a phone without Google's push services, or a problem on Telegram's side.

Before you start: a quick test

Do this first. It tells you which part of this guide to read.

  1. Ask a friend to send you a message in a private chat that you have not muted. Or send one to yourself from another account.
  2. Lock your phone and wait.
  3. Note what happens, and whether you were using Telegram on a computer at the time. That can change whether your phone buzzes, as explained below.

Then match the result:

  • Nothing at all, from any chat. Start with the phone's permission and Focus sections, then Telegram's global settings.
  • Notifications from some chats but not others. Check muted chats, exceptions and archived chats.
  • Notifications arrive late or only when you open Telegram. Check battery and background settings on Android, and connection issues on both.
  • A sound or banner is missing, but the badge appears. Check notification style and sound settings.

Cause 1: the chat is muted

Signs of a muted chat

Some chats notify you and others never do. The silent chat shows a crossed-out speaker icon next to its name in the chat list.

Fix it

  1. Open the chat.
  2. Tap its name at the top to open its info.
  3. Find the mute or notifications option and turn notifications on.
  4. Check whether a custom setting was applied, such as "mute for a period" or "notify without sound".

Muting is easy to do by accident with a long press or a swipe. Our guide on how to pin, mute and archive Telegram chats explains each option.

If it still stays silent

Check whether the chat is archived. Archived chats that are muted stay in the archive and stay silent. Unarchive the chat and unmute it.

Cause 2: a whole category is switched off in Telegram

Signs of a disabled category

No private chats notify you, or no groups, or no channels, while the other types still do.

Fix it on iPhone and Android

  1. Open Telegram's Settings.
  2. Open the notifications and sounds section.
  3. Look at the separate entries for private chats, groups and channels.
  4. Make sure notifications are turned on for each type you want.
  5. Look at the exceptions list in each category. An exception for a specific chat overrides the category setting, so a chat can be silenced there even if the category is on.

Reset everything if you are unsure

Telegram's notification settings include an option to reset all notification settings, usually at the bottom of the section. It returns every category and every custom chat exception to the defaults. Use it when you cannot work out which of many exceptions is causing trouble, but note it also removes exceptions you set on purpose.

Cause 3: the phone is not allowing Telegram notifications

Signs of a blocked permission

Nothing from Telegram appears at all, even from unmuted chats, and Telegram's own settings look fine.

Fix it on iPhone

  1. Open the iPhone's Settings app, then Notifications, then Telegram.
  2. Make sure notifications are allowed.
  3. Turn on the lock screen, notification centre and banners if you want to see them.
  4. Check that sounds and badges are on.
  5. If notifications are set to arrive in a scheduled summary, change that to immediate delivery so they come at once.

Fix it on Android

  1. Open the phone's Settings, then Apps, then Telegram, then Notifications. The exact path varies by manufacturer.
  2. Make sure notifications are allowed for Telegram.
  3. Look at the list of notification categories Telegram has created. Android lets each category be switched off separately, so private chats may be on while groups are off.
  4. For the categories you care about, check that sound and pop-up are allowed and the importance is not set to silent.
  5. On newer Android versions, Telegram asks for notification permission on first launch. If you refused it then, allow it here.

If it still does not work

Restart the phone. Permission changes sometimes need a fresh start of the app to take effect.

Cause 4: Focus or Do Not Disturb is on

Signs of a Focus mode

Notifications appear in the notification list later but never made a sound or lit up the screen. A moon or Focus icon appears in the status bar or on the lock screen.

Fix it on iPhone

  1. Open Control Centre and check whether a Focus mode is active, such as Do Not Disturb, Sleep or Work.
  2. Turn it off, or open Settings, Focus, choose the active Focus, and add Telegram to the allowed apps.
  3. Check for scheduled Focus modes that switch on automatically at certain times or places.
  4. If you use Focus filters, check whether Telegram is excluded.

Fix it on Android

  1. Pull down the quick settings and check whether Do Not Disturb or a similar mode is on.
  2. Turn it off, or open the Do Not Disturb settings and allow Telegram as an exception.
  3. Check for schedules, such as bedtime modes, that turn it on automatically.
  4. Some manufacturers have their own modes, such as gaming or driving modes, which also silence notifications. Check those too.

Cause 5: battery saving stops Telegram in the background (mainly Android)

Signs of battery restrictions

Notifications arrive late, in bursts, or only when you open Telegram. It often gets worse when the phone has been idle for a while or the battery is low.

Why it happens

To save battery, Android and many manufacturers restrict what apps can do when not on screen. Some phone makers are especially aggressive and can stop apps from receiving anything in the background. Telegram's push messages may then be delayed until you open the app.

SponsoredCrypto Trading26K members · TradingOpen in Telegram

Fix it on Android

  1. Open the phone's Settings, then Apps, then Telegram, then Battery.
  2. Set battery usage to unrestricted, or the setting that allows background activity. Names vary by manufacturer.
  3. Look for a battery optimisation list in the phone's battery settings and exclude Telegram from it.
  4. If your phone has an app-sleeping feature that puts unused apps to sleep, make sure Telegram is not on the sleeping list.
  5. Turn off battery saver mode, or allow Telegram as an exception if your phone supports that.
  6. Check whether background data is allowed for Telegram in the app's mobile data settings.

Telegram's own options on Android

Telegram for Android has offered extra options in its notification settings to help with unreliable delivery, such as keeping a background connection or a service that keeps the app alive. These use more battery. If your phone kills Telegram constantly, try them. If they are not shown in your version, the steps above are what matter.

Fix it on iPhone

iPhones handle push notifications reliably even when the app is closed. Low Power Mode can delay some background activity, so if notifications seem late only when it is on, that is the reason. Background App Refresh affects how fresh the app's content is when you open it, rather than whether push notifications arrive.

Cause 6: no Google push services on the phone

Signs of missing push services

You use an Android phone without Google's services, such as some recent phones sold without them, or a custom system without Google apps. Notifications never arrive, or arrive only when Telegram is open.

Why it happens

Most Android apps receive push notifications through Google's push service. Without it, Telegram has to keep its own connection open in the background, which battery management may close.

Fix it

  1. Install Telegram from an official source that supports your phone.
  2. Turn on any background connection option Telegram offers in its notification settings.
  3. Exclude Telegram from battery optimisation as in Cause 5.
  4. Allow Telegram to start automatically if your phone has an auto-start or launch manager setting.

If it still does not work

Some phones simply cannot keep a background connection open reliably. In that case, notifications may only be dependable while the app is running. Telegram Desktop on a computer can be a useful backup for important chats.

Cause 7: you were active on Telegram Desktop or Web

Signs of desktop activity

Your phone stays quiet while you are working at a computer with Telegram open, then behaves normally afterwards.

Why it happens

Telegram tries not to notify you twice. While you are actively using Telegram on another device, your phone may not buzz for messages you are already seeing there. This is intended behaviour, not a fault.

What to do

Nothing, usually. If you want your phone to notify you regardless, close Telegram on the computer when you step away, or check Telegram Desktop's notification settings for related options.

Cause 8: connection problems

Signs of a connection problem

The top of Telegram says connecting, updating or waiting for network for a long time. Notifications are late and messages load slowly when you open the app.

Fix it

  1. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data and see whether it changes.
  2. Turn off any VPN temporarily and test again. Some VPNs and networks interfere with push delivery.
  3. If you use a proxy inside Telegram, check it still works, or turn it off to test. Our guide to Telegram proxy setup explains the settings.
  4. On iPhone, check that Low Data Mode is not on for your current network.
  5. On public or work Wi-Fi, try mobile data instead; some networks block the connections push services need.

If Telegram seems stuck connecting rather than just late, see our guide to Telegram stuck on connecting.

Cause 9: sounds, previews and badges are set to quiet

Signs of quiet notification styles

A notification arrives in the list but makes no sound, or the lock screen says only "new message" without the text.

Fix it

  1. In Telegram's notifications settings, check the sound chosen for each category. "None" means silent banners.
  2. Check whether message previews are turned off in Telegram. Without previews, banners show no text.
  3. On iPhone, check the phone's own preview setting under Notifications. If previews show only when unlocked, locked banners will hide the text.
  4. On Android, check the lock screen notification setting, which can hide sensitive content.
  5. Check that the phone's ringer or media volume is not off. On iPhone, the side switch silences notification sounds.

A message that was sent silently

The sender may have chosen to send a message without sound. Telegram lets senders do this, and the message arrives with no sound regardless of your settings. Our guide to silent messages explains how it works from both sides.

Cause 10: notifications for a second account

Signs of a multi-account problem

You use more than one Telegram account in the same app, and only one notifies you.

Fix it

  1. Switch to the silent account in Telegram.
  2. Open its Settings and the notifications section. Settings are separate per account.
  3. Check that notifications are enabled for each category, as in Cause 2.
  4. Look for an option about showing notifications from all accounts, and turn it on if you want to hear from the account you are not currently viewing.

Our guide on using multiple Telegram accounts covers switching and per-account settings.

Cause 11: an outdated or corrupted app

Signs of an app problem

Settings all look correct, other apps notify normally, and the problem started after a phone update or seemingly at random.

Fix it

  1. Update Telegram from the official app store.
  2. Restart the phone.
  3. Log out of Telegram and back in, making sure you know your two-step verification password and can receive a login code first. Logging in again registers the device for push notifications afresh.
  4. As a last step, reinstall Telegram. Your chats are stored in Telegram's cloud and return after you log in, except secret chats, which exist only on the device where they were created.

Cause 12: a problem on Telegram's side

Signs of a wider outage

Several people around you notice the same thing at once, messages are slow to send as well as to notify, and nothing you change makes a difference.

What to do

  1. Check whether other apps notify normally. If they do, and many Telegram users nearby report trouble, the problem is probably not your phone.
  2. Wait rather than changing many settings. Undoing a dozen changes later is harder than waiting an hour.
  3. Once service returns, run the quick test again. If notifications are still missing, go back through the causes above, because an outage can coincide with a setting problem.

After moving to a new phone

Notifications often fail right after switching phones, because several settings do not travel with your account.

  1. Allow notifications when Telegram asks. On a new phone, Telegram requests permission on first launch. If you tapped "don't allow" in a hurry, fix it in the phone's settings as in Cause 3.
  2. Recreate Focus and Do Not Disturb exceptions. These belong to the phone, not to Telegram. Some phones copy them during a transfer and some do not.
  3. Redo battery exceptions on Android. A new phone, or even a reinstall, resets battery optimisation for Telegram.
  4. Check that the old phone is logged out. If it is still signed in and active somewhere, it may be getting the attention instead. Review active sessions in privacy and security.
  5. Remember what did travel. Telegram's own settings, such as muted chats and category settings, are generally tied to your account and follow you.

Our guide to moving Telegram to a new phone covers the rest of the switch.

Smartwatches, cars and other connected devices

Telegram notifications on a watch or in a car usually mirror what your phone receives, so the phone is where to fix them.

  • Apple Watch generally follows the iPhone's notification settings for Telegram. If the iPhone does not notify, the watch will not either. If the iPhone does but the watch does not, check the Watch app on the iPhone and make sure Telegram notifications are mirrored.
  • Android watches depend on the companion app on the phone, which has its own list of apps allowed to send notifications to the watch. Make sure Telegram is enabled there.
  • Cars and earbuds that read messages aloud use the phone's notifications and the car or earbud app's permissions. If the phone's notification is silent or hidden, they have nothing to announce.

When a connected device misbehaves, test the phone first with the quick test above. Fix the phone and the rest usually follows.

If you also use Telegram Desktop

Desktop notifications work separately from the phone and have their own settings.

  1. In Telegram Desktop, open Settings and the notifications section, and check that desktop notifications are on.
  2. Check the computer's own notification settings. Windows and macOS both let you block notifications per app and have their own focus or do not disturb modes.
  3. If you use the web version in a browser, the browser needs permission to show notifications for that site, and the tab usually has to stay open.

Remember Cause 7 from the phone's side: if Desktop is open and active, your phone may stay quiet on purpose.

The opposite problem: too many notifications

Sometimes people turn notifications off entirely because Telegram was too noisy, then forget and wonder why it went quiet. A better balance prevents both problems.

  • Mute busy groups and channels, but leave private chats on.
  • Use exceptions so the few groups that matter still notify you.
  • Set less important chats to notify without sound, so they appear in the list but do not interrupt.
  • Use folders to keep high-volume chats out of your main view.
  • Turn off contact-joined alerts if you do not need them.
  • Review once in a while. Exceptions pile up; a quick tidy every few months keeps settings understandable.

Avoid "notification booster" apps

App stores contain apps that promise to fix notifications for every messenger. Most simply ask for broad permissions, such as reading all notifications on your phone, which is a privacy risk, and they cannot change how Telegram or the push service work. The steps in this guide use only your phone's and Telegram's own settings, which is all that is needed.

Mentions, replies and muted groups

Many people mute busy groups but still want to know when someone mentions or replies to them. Telegram shows mentions and replies in muted chats with a marker in the chat list, so you can spot them when you look. Whether a mention in a muted group also produces a notification depends on your settings and app version, so check the notifications section for options about mentions.

If you want a group to stay quiet but not invisible, a middle path is useful: keep it unmuted but set its notifications to arrive without sound. Or put busy groups in a folder so they do not crowd out important chats. Our guide to Telegram folders explains how to set that up.

For channel owners: why subscribers say they missed a post

Admins sometimes hear that readers "never got a notification" for a post. Before changing anything, consider the reader's side.

  • Many readers mute channels. It is common to follow channels muted and read them when convenient. A muted channel never notifies, whatever you do.
  • You may have posted silently. Telegram lets admins publish a post without sound. Readers still see it in the channel, but their phone stays quiet.
  • Their phone may be filtering. Everything in this guide applies to your readers too: Focus modes, battery savers and categories.
  • Too many posts teach readers to mute. A channel that posts constantly often ends up muted. Fewer, better-timed posts keep notifications welcome. Our guide on how often a channel should post discusses this balance.

You cannot force notifications on anyone, and you should not try. Make the important posts count, pin what matters, and accept that some readers will check in on their own schedule.

Worked examples

These are illustrative cases showing how the quick test leads to the fix.

Example: the silent evenings

An iPhone user gets no Telegram notifications after nine at night. A Sleep Focus is scheduled from nine. They add Telegram to the Focus's allowed apps for family chats only, by allowing specific people, and keep everything else quiet.

Example: notifications only when the app opens

An Android user's messages all appear at once when they open Telegram. The phone's battery manager has put Telegram to sleep. Setting Telegram's battery use to unrestricted and removing it from the sleeping apps list fixes it.

Example: one quiet group

A user hears every chat except their work group. The group has a crossed-out speaker. Someone long-pressed it during a busy week and muted it. Unmuting it in the chat info restores notifications.

SponsoredOnly Finance83K members · FinanceOpen in Telegram

Example: quiet at the desk

A user notices their phone never buzzes during office hours. They use Telegram Desktop all day. Telegram is avoiding double notifications. This is expected behaviour, and their phone behaves normally once they leave.

A checklist to work through

  1. Is the specific chat muted or archived?
  2. Are private chats, groups and channels each enabled in Telegram's notifications settings?
  3. Does an exception override the category?
  4. Does the phone allow Telegram notifications, including the right categories on Android?
  5. Is a Focus mode, Do Not Disturb or scheduled summary on?
  6. On Android, is Telegram restricted by battery saving or app sleeping?
  7. Is Telegram open on a computer at the same time?
  8. Is the connection stable, and is a VPN or proxy interfering?
  9. Is the sound set to none, or previews hidden?
  10. Are you looking at the right account?
  11. Is the app up to date, and does logging out and back in help?

Common mistakes

  • Only checking Telegram's settings. The phone's own permissions and Focus modes are just as often the cause.
  • Forgetting Android notification categories. One category can be off while the rest are on.
  • Fighting battery savers with repeated reinstalls. Reinstalling does not change battery restrictions; exclude Telegram instead.
  • Resetting all notifications without noting exceptions. You will lose custom settings you wanted.
  • Expecting secret chats to survive a reinstall. They exist only on the device where they were created and are lost if you remove the app.
  • Blaming Telegram when a desktop session is open. Your phone may be quiet on purpose.
  • Ignoring silent messages. A sender can choose to send without sound.

FAQ

Why do Telegram notifications come late on my Android phone?

Usually battery optimisation or an app-sleeping feature is restricting Telegram in the background. Allow unrestricted battery use for Telegram and remove it from any sleeping list.

Why don't I get notifications when Telegram is closed on iPhone?

Push notifications on iPhone work when the app is closed, so check the iPhone's notification permission for Telegram, Focus modes and scheduled summaries. Also check Telegram's own notification settings.

How do I get notifications for only some groups?

Mute the groups you do not want, or set exceptions in Telegram's notifications settings so only selected groups notify you.

Why do I get notifications for channels I never read?

Channel notifications are on for that channel. Mute it from its info page, or turn off channel notifications as a category and add exceptions for the few you want.

Does reinstalling Telegram delete my chats?

Cloud chats return when you log in again. Secret chats do not, because they are stored only on the device. Check before reinstalling.

Why do I get a notification when a contact joins Telegram?

That is a separate setting. Our guide to stopping "contact joined Telegram" notifications explains how to turn it off.

Summary

Telegram notifications pass through Telegram's settings, your phone's settings and a push delivery path. Start with a test message from an unmuted private chat. If one chat is silent, unmute or unarchive it. If a whole type is silent, check categories and exceptions in Telegram. If nothing arrives, check the phone's notification permission and any Focus or Do Not Disturb mode. On Android, late notifications almost always mean battery restrictions, so allow Telegram unrestricted background use. Remember that an active desktop session, silent messages and second accounts can all explain quiet moments, and logging out and back in re-registers your phone for push notifications.
