How to Send Silent Messages on Telegram

Send a Telegram message that arrives without a sound or vibration, on phone or computer, and post silently in channels and groups you run.

Getting StartedHow to Send Silent Messages on Telegram

To send a silent message on Telegram, press and hold the send button and choose "Send Without Sound". The message arrives normally, but the recipient's phone does not ring or vibrate for it. On Telegram Desktop you right-click the send button instead, and in channels you can switch a post to silent before publishing.

Below you will find the steps for each device, how silent posting works in channels and groups, how it combines with scheduling, what the recipient actually sees, and when silence is the polite choice.

What a silent message is, and what it is not

A silent message is an ordinary message with one flag set: "do not make a sound for this". Telegram delivers it like any other message. It appears in the chat, raises the unread count, and can still show a banner or a badge depending on the recipient's phone.

What changes is the alert. The recipient's device does not play a notification sound and does not vibrate for that message.

What it is not:

  • Not hidden. The recipient can see it as soon as they open Telegram.
  • Not secret. It is a normal cloud message. For end-to-end encrypted one-to-one chats, see Telegram secret chats.
  • Not self-deleting. It stays until someone deletes it. For timed deletion, read how to auto-delete messages.
  • Not a way around someone's settings. If they muted you or the chat, nothing makes a sound anyway.

Send a silent message on Android

  1. Open the chat and type your message.
  2. Press and hold the send button (the paper plane) instead of tapping it.
  3. A small menu appears. Tap "Send Without Sound".

The same menu usually offers "Schedule Message" too. If you release your finger too quickly, the message is sent normally, so hold until the menu shows.

Send a silent message on iPhone and iPad

  1. Type your message.
  2. Press and hold the send arrow.
  3. Choose "Send Without Sound" from the menu that slides up.

On iPhone, a light press and a long press can behave differently. If the menu does not appear, hold a little longer without moving your finger.

Send a silent message on Telegram Desktop

  1. Type your message in the input field.
  2. Right-click the send button.
  3. Choose "Send without sound".

The right-click menu on Desktop also offers scheduling options. In Telegram Web, try right-clicking or long-pressing the send button; the web versions offer similar options, though their layout changes more often. Our guide to Telegram on Desktop and Web explains how the versions differ.

Silent media, files and voice messages

Photos, videos and files use the same send button, so the same long-press works. After choosing media, hold the send button in the preview screen and pick the silent option.

Voice and video messages are different. They are sent the moment you release the record button, so there is no menu. If you need a voice note to arrive quietly, one workaround is to lock the recording (slide up while recording), stop, and then use the send button, which in some versions offers the long-press menu. If your version does not, there is no reliable silent option for voice notes.

Silent posts in a channel

Channel admins often need this most. A post at 6 a.m. that buzzes thousands of phones is a good way to collect mutes.

On a phone

  1. Open your channel and start typing a post.
  2. Look for a bell icon in the input field. Tapping it toggles between notifying and silent broadcasting.
  3. When the bell is crossed out, posts are sent silently.

The toggle stays as you left it, so remember to switch it back for posts that should notify. Alternatively, ignore the bell and use the long-press menu on the send button for one-off silent posts.

On Desktop

The channel input field also shows a bell icon in many versions. Click it to switch silent mode on or off, or right-click the send button for a single silent post.

When to post silently in a channel

  • Small follow-ups to a post you just sent, such as a correction or an extra photo.
  • Posts outside your audience's waking hours, if you cannot schedule.
  • Routine updates where speed does not matter.

Save normal, notifying posts for content readers would want to know about straight away. Subscribers who feel buzzed too often mute the channel, and muted readers see fewer posts. If you want to know how posting rhythm affects that, read how often a Telegram channel should post.

Silent messages in groups

In a group, a silent message spares every member who has the group unmuted. That is a courtesy in large groups, especially for late-night messages or quick replies like "thanks".

Admins sometimes post rules reminders or pinned updates silently. Note that pinning has its own notification choice. When you pin a message, Telegram may ask whether to notify all members. Choosing not to notify keeps the pin quiet even if the original message made a sound.

Combine silent sending with scheduling

You can schedule a message and also make it silent, depending on your version.

  1. Long-press (or right-click) the send button.
  2. Choose "Schedule Message".
  3. Pick the date and time.

In a channel, set the bell to silent before scheduling, and the scheduled post goes out quietly. In private chats, some versions offer a "Send When Online" option, which delivers the message when the other person next appears online. That is a different tool: it chooses the moment, while silent sending removes the sound.

What the recipient sees

On the recipient's side:

  • The message appears in the chat list with the unread badge.
  • The phone may show a banner or lock-screen preview without sound, depending on their phone's notification style.
  • Nothing in the chat labels the message as silent. They will not see a "sent silently" note.

That last point matters. Silent sending is a polite tool, not a covert one, and the recipient cannot tell whether you used it.

Silent sending, muting and Do Not Disturb compared

People often mix up three tools that all reduce noise. They work on different sides of the conversation.

  • Silent sending is chosen by the sender, for one message (or, with the channel bell, for posts until switched back). The recipient's settings stay untouched.
  • Muting a chat is chosen by the recipient, for one chat. Every message in that chat arrives without sound until they unmute it, whatever the sender chose.
  • Do Not Disturb or Focus modes are chosen by the recipient on their phone. They silence Telegram along with other apps, usually on a schedule.

The practical lesson: silent sending is the only one of the three you control as the sender. If you are the one who wants peace, mute the chat instead. The guide to pinning, muting and archiving chats covers that side.

Silent messages from bots

If you build or run a bot, the same feature is available through the Bot API. Methods that send messages accept a parameter for disabling the notification, so a bot can send a quiet update instead of a loud one. That suits routine messages such as "your daily report is ready", where the user will open it when convenient.

Good habits for bots:

  • Notify for things the user asked to be told about straight away, such as an alert they set up.
  • Send quietly for summaries, confirmations and anything the user triggered themselves. They are already looking at the chat.
  • Let users choose. A simple settings command that switches a bot's messages between quiet and normal is easy to build and is appreciated.

Troubleshooting: "my silent message still made a sound"

A few situations make it look as if silent sending failed.

The message was sent normally

The most common cause is a tap instead of a hold. Check by sending a test silent message to a friend who agreed to help, and watch whether the menu appears before you release.

A different message caused the sound

If you sent a silent message and then a normal one a few seconds later, the second one plays the sound. People then remember the sound against the first. Send follow-ups silently too, or combine them into one message.

The recipient's phone shows a sound from another source

Smartwatches, tablets and some notification-mirroring apps can generate their own alerts. The silent flag tells Telegram's apps not to alert, but a third-party mirroring app may not respect it. That is outside your control as the sender.

The channel bell was set back

On a new device or after reinstalling, the channel bell may default to notifying. Check it on each device you post from.

Example: a considerate late-night message

Example only. Sam needs to tell a colleague that tomorrow's meeting moved. It is 11:40 p.m.

  1. Sam types the message.
  2. He holds the send button and chooses "Send Without Sound".
  3. The colleague sees it at breakfast, with no buzz at midnight.

If Sam had wanted it to arrive at 8 a.m. instead, scheduling would have been the better choice.

Common mistakes

  • Tapping instead of holding. A quick tap sends normally. Hold until the menu appears.
  • Leaving the channel bell on silent. The toggle persists. An important announcement then goes out without a sound. Check the bell before posting.
  • Expecting secrecy. A silent message is a normal message. Do not use it for anything you would not send openly.
  • Using silence for urgent news. If something is urgent, the sound is the point.
  • Assuming silent pins. Pinning is a separate action with its own notify choice.

FAQ

Can the recipient tell I sent a message silently?

No. Telegram does not mark the message, so it looks like any other.

Does a silent message still show a notification banner?

It can. The sound and vibration are skipped, but the recipient's phone may still show a quiet banner or badge.

Can I make all my messages silent by default?

Not in private chats as a single switch. In channels, the bell toggle stays on silent until you change it, which works like a default for that channel.

Why is there no "Send Without Sound" option?

You may be tapping rather than holding, using an outdated app, or sending a voice note, which skips the menu. Update the app and hold the send button longer.

Does sending silently help my channel's reach?

Not directly. It can reduce the irritation that leads people to mute a channel, but how many people read a post depends on its content and your audience. See Telegram channel engagement rate for how reading is measured.

Summary

Hold the send button and choose "Send Without Sound" on Android or iPhone, or right-click the send button on Desktop. In channels, the bell icon in the input field switches posts between notifying and silent. Silent messages are delivered and visible as normal; only the sound and vibration are skipped. Combine silence with scheduling for posts at awkward hours, and keep notifying posts for news your readers want straight away.
