Telegram Paid Media: How to Sell Photos and Videos With Stars

How Telegram's paid media posts work, how to publish one, how to price and caption it, where the Stars go, and how to avoid the mistakes that cost creators buyers.

MonetizationTelegram Paid Media: How to Sell Photos and Videos With Stars

Telegram paid media lets a channel post photos or videos that readers unlock by paying in Telegram Stars. Subscribers see a blurred preview and a price; once they pay, the full media opens for them. The Stars collect in the channel's balance, where the owner can spend them on ads or withdraw them under Telegram's rules.

This guide explains how the feature works, how to publish a paid post on each platform, how to price and present it, and what to check before you rely on it as income.

What paid media is, in plain terms

A normal channel post is free for every subscriber. A paid media post is a post whose photos or videos are locked. Everyone can see that the post exists, read its caption and see a very low-resolution, blurred preview. To see the real media, a reader pays the price set by the channel, in Stars.

Telegram's developer documentation says that paid media currently supports photos and videos only. Text, files, music and voice messages cannot be locked this way. The caption stays readable for everyone, which matters a great deal for selling, as later sections explain.

What Telegram Stars are

Stars are Telegram's in-app currency for digital goods and services. People buy them inside Telegram, often through their phone's app store, and spend them on things like paid posts, bot services, subscriptions and reactions. A full explanation is in Telegram Stars explained.

How paid media differs from other ways to charge

Telegram now has several ways to earn from a channel. They solve different problems.

  • Paid media charges per post. A reader pays once to unlock one set of photos or videos.
  • Paid subscriptions charge for access to a whole channel over time, through a special invite link. See paid Telegram channels explained.
  • Paid reactions let readers tip a post they liked, with no content locked. See Telegram paid reactions explained.
  • Selling through a bot suits files, courses and anything that needs delivery, accounts or invoices.

Paid media works best for a single, self-contained piece of visual content that is worth paying for on its own.

Choosing between paid posts and a paid channel

Creators often ask whether to sell single posts or run a separate paid channel. A few questions settle it:

  • Is your premium content regular and ongoing? A paid subscription fits a steady stream, such as daily lessons. Paid media fits occasional, standout pieces.
  • Do you want one audience or two? Paid media keeps everyone in one channel, so free readers see what they are missing. A paid channel splits your audience, which can feel cleaner but makes it harder for free readers to discover the premium side.
  • How do buyers prefer to pay? Some readers dislike recurring charges and happily pay once for something specific. Others prefer one subscription to many small purchases.

Many creators start with paid media to learn what readers will pay for, then move the most popular formats into a subscription channel once demand is clear.

Who paid media suits, and who it does not

Good fits

  • Photographers selling full-resolution sets from a shoot, while posting free highlights.
  • Educators posting a short video lesson or a worked example as a paid extra, next to free tips.
  • Artists and illustrators sharing process videos, high-quality scans or early access to new work.
  • Analysts and specialists sharing detailed charts or video walk-throughs, where the visual is the value.
  • Travel and food creators offering a full video guide while the free channel carries short clips.

Poor fits

  • Content that is already free elsewhere. If readers can find the same video on another platform, few will pay.
  • Text-heavy material. Paid media cannot lock text. A long guide hidden behind a photo of a page is awkward and hard to read.
  • Anything against Telegram's rules or the law. Telegram's terms apply to paid posts as much as free ones. Pirated material, other people's photos used without permission and illegal content get channels banned. TGDirectory also does not list channels built around adult content, gambling or illegal material.

Before you start

Check these points first. Each one avoids a common problem.

  1. You are the channel owner or an admin with posting rights. Paid posts are made by whoever publishes them.
  2. Your Telegram app is up to date. The paid option only appears in versions that support it.
  3. You own the rights to the media. Selling someone else's photos or clips is a copyright problem, even if you edited them.
  4. You have a free content plan. A channel that only posts locked content gives new readers no reason to stay. Decide what remains free.
  5. You know how you will use the Stars. Read how to withdraw Telegram Stars before you sell, so the rules around waiting periods and eligibility do not surprise you.
  6. You have thought about tax. Income from Stars may be taxable where you live. Telegram income taxes for creators gives general information; check local rules or ask a professional.

How to publish a paid media post

Telegram changes its interface often, and the exact icon or label may differ on your device. The process below describes the pattern. If your screen differs, look for a star symbol or the words "paid" or "price" in the media editor.

On Android and iPhone

  1. Open your channel.
  2. Tap the attachment button and choose the photos or videos you want to sell. You can select one item or several to sell as a set.
  3. On the preview screen before sending, look for the option to make the content paid. It is often shown with a star icon.
  4. Enter the price in Stars. Telegram sets a maximum price, and the app will stop you if you go above it.
  5. Write the caption. This is the part every reader sees before paying, so treat it as your sales text.
  6. Send the post, or schedule it. Scheduling works as with any post.
  7. Open the channel as a reader would and check that the preview is blurred and the price is shown.

On Telegram Desktop

  1. Open the channel and attach the media through the paperclip icon or by dragging files in.
  2. In the sending window, look for the paid or star option. It may be inside a menu next to the caption.
  3. Set the price, write the caption and send.

On Telegram Web

Web versions have added features more slowly than the apps. If you cannot find the paid option in your browser, publish from a phone or Telegram Desktop. Paid posts are visible and purchasable on every platform once published.

Selling several items as one post

If you select several photos or videos together, they can be sent as one paid post at one price. The buyer unlocks the whole set at once. This works well for a photo series, a set of lessons or before-and-after images. Keep the set coherent; a buyer who pays for a series and finds one good image and nine fillers will not buy again.

If the paid option does not appear

  1. Update Telegram on that device.
  2. Make sure you are posting in a channel, not a group or a private chat.
  3. Check that your admin role in the channel allows posting.
  4. Try another device.
  5. Check Telegram's own help pages or channel for any limits on where paid media is available.

Writing the caption and preview that sell

Readers see a blurred image and your caption. That is all they have to decide with. Creators often put all their effort into the media and leave the caption as an afterthought, which is backwards.

What a good paid caption contains

  • What exactly is inside. "12 full-resolution photos from the harbour at sunrise", not "Exclusive content".
  • The format. Number of photos, or the length of the video.
  • Why it is worth paying for. What does the buyer get that the free channel does not give them?
  • Who it is for. "For beginners setting up their first aquarium" filters out people who would be disappointed.
  • Any limits. If a video is a preview of a longer series, say so.

What to avoid

  • Vague teasers. "You won't believe this" invites disappointment and complaints.
  • Over-promising. If the caption claims more than the media delivers, buyers stop trusting all your paid posts.
  • Pressure tactics. Fake countdowns and "only today" lines that are not true damage trust in your channel.

A free sample beside the paid post

The blur hides almost everything. Many creators post one free image or a short free clip just before the paid post, so readers can judge the quality. This turns "should I risk it?" into "I like this, I want the rest".

Pricing paid media

Telegram does not tell you what to charge, and nobody can tell you a correct price for your audience in advance. The useful thing is a method for finding it.

Think in value, not in Stars

Stars are an unfamiliar unit to many readers. Decide what the content is worth to a buyer first, in terms they understand, then convert that idea into Stars. The value of Stars to buyers and creators differs, because buyers pay through app stores and other channels with their own fees.

A simple test-and-adjust method

  1. Start with a price that feels slightly low for what you are offering. Early buyers build trust, and trust sells later posts.
  2. Keep the content type the same for a few posts so you can compare like with like.
  3. Look at how many unlocks each price gets in your channel statistics or Stars history.
  4. Change one thing at a time. If you raise the price and change the content type together, you cannot tell which made the difference.
  5. Create tiers. Small extras at a low price, bigger sets or longer videos at a higher one.

Worked example (illustrative only)

A wildlife photographer posts free daily photos and a paid set once a week. Over a month, she tries two prices on similar sets. At the lower price, more readers unlock each set; at the higher price, fewer readers unlock, but she earns a similar number of Stars overall. She settles on the lower price for regular sets, because more buyers means more people who have seen her best work, and uses the higher price for occasional special sets. These numbers are for illustration; your audience will behave differently, which is why testing matters.

What buyers see and do

Understanding the buyer's side helps you design posts and answer questions.

  1. The reader sees the post with a blurred preview, the caption and a price.
  2. They tap to unlock, and Telegram asks them to confirm the payment in Stars.
  3. If they do not have enough Stars, Telegram offers a way to buy more.
  4. After paying, the media opens for them. They can view it again later from the post.

Buyers should only spend Stars on channels they trust. Stars purchases are generally not easy to reverse. For readers, Telegram Stars refunds explains what is and is not possible.

Protecting what you sell

Once someone can see a photo or video, they can capture it somehow. No setting makes paid media impossible to copy. You can still make casual copying harder.

Restrict saving content

Channels can turn on a setting that prevents forwarding and saving of posts. It stops the easy routes: forwarding to another chat and saving to the gallery. It does not stop screenshots on every device or someone filming the screen with another phone. Details are in how to restrict saving content on Telegram.

Watermark thoughtfully

A small, consistent watermark with your channel name helps people find the original if your content is reposted. Keep it out of the main subject so it does not spoil what buyers paid for.

Know what to do when content is copied

If your paid media turns up for free in another channel, collect links and report the copy to Telegram from the post's menu. Keep your own originals, with their dates, as evidence that the work is yours.

Where the Stars go and how to use them

The channel's Stars balance

Stars earned from paid media are credited to the channel, not to the admin who made the post. The owner can see the balance and a history of transactions in the channel's monetization or Stars section. Exact menu names vary by version, so look in the channel's statistics or settings.

Ways to use them

Telegram describes two main uses for Stars earned by channels:

  • Advertising. Stars can be spent on Telegram Ads to promote the channel. Telegram has said this can be done at a discount compared with buying ads another way.
  • Withdrawal. Stars can be exchanged for Toncoin through Fragment, Telegram's marketplace platform. Telegram applies its own rules, such as waiting periods and minimum amounts, and these can change. Check the current conditions inside Telegram before you plan around them.

Telegram has said it takes almost no commission on Stars transactions for creators, but buyers pay app store or payment fees when they buy Stars, and withdrawal involves crypto. Converting Toncoin to local money is a separate step with its own fees and rules. This is general information, not financial advice; crypto prices move, and you should check the rules where you live.

Keep simple records

Note each paid post, its price and how many unlocks it got. Telegram keeps a history, but your own notes make it easier to compare posts, plan prices and prepare tax records.

Building a paid media strategy

Keep most of the channel free

Free posts bring subscribers in and keep them. Paid posts are the reward for the most interested readers. A channel where almost everything is locked tends to lose subscribers, which shrinks the pool of future buyers.

Make paid posts predictable

Readers like knowing what to expect. "Every Friday: the full set from this week's shoot" builds a habit. Random paid posts feel like interruptions. Planning paid posts in a content calendar helps you keep that rhythm.

Pair paid media with engagement

Comments and reactions on free posts tell you what readers love. The topics that get the strongest response are the best candidates for paid extras. If you have comments switched on, readers will often tell you directly what they would pay for.

Never bait and switch

If a caption promises something, the media must deliver it. One misleading paid post can lose you more than it earns, because buyers talk and the next paid post gets fewer unlocks.

Combine with other earning methods carefully

A channel can use paid media, paid reactions and sponsored posts together. Too many paid prompts in a row feel greedy.

Paid media ideas by niche

Concrete formats are easier to plan than "exclusive content". These are starting points; adapt them to what your readers already respond to.

  • Cooking: the full step-by-step video of a recipe whose result you showed for free; a photo set of each stage for people who cook along.
  • Fitness and yoga: a complete follow-along session video, while the free channel shares single exercises and tips.
  • Language learning: a short video lesson on one grammar point, with examples on screen; free posts carry the daily word or phrase.
  • Design and art: a time-lapse of a full piece from sketch to finish; high-resolution scans of finished work for personal use.
  • Gardening and DIY: a detailed video of a full repair or planting job, while free posts show the before and after.
  • Travel: a video walking route through a neighbourhood, with the free channel posting single highlights.
  • Gaming guides: a video walk-through of a difficult level or build, with free posts covering quick tips.
  • Education and exam prep: a video solving a full past exam question, explained step by step.

Two rules hold across niches. The paid item should be complete on its own, so the buyer does not feel they bought a fragment. And it should be clearly more than the free version, not the same thing with a lock on it.

Announcing paid posts without annoying free readers

Free subscribers did not sign up to be sold to every day. A few habits keep them happy.

  • Keep a steady ratio. Many free posts for each paid one is a common pattern. Decide your own ratio and stick to it.
  • Say what is coming. A short note earlier in the week, such as "Friday's paid set covers the night shoot", lets interested readers look forward to it and lets others ignore it.
  • Do not repeat the same paid post. Re-sharing a locked post several times reads as pressure. One reminder at most.
  • Give something back. Occasionally make an older paid post's best image free. It shows new readers what the paid posts are like.

Measuring what sells

Guessing at what readers want wastes good content. A small amount of tracking makes each paid post better than the last.

  1. Record every paid post in a simple list: date, topic, number of items, price and caption style.
  2. Note unlocks after a fixed period, such as three days, so newer and older posts are compared fairly.
  3. Compare against views. A paid post seen by many subscribers but unlocked by few has a caption or price problem. One seen by few has a timing or reach problem. Your channel's statistics show views per post.
  4. Look for patterns monthly, not after every post. Single posts are noisy.
  5. Ask readers. A short poll asking which paid topic they would like next costs nothing and often gives a clear answer.

Troubleshooting paid media

There is no option to make a post paid

How to recognise it: you attach a photo in your channel but see no star or price option.

  1. Update the app.
  2. Confirm you are in a channel and that you can post there.
  3. Try the mobile app if you are on web.
  4. Check Telegram's help pages for any regional or account limits on the feature.

If that does not work: ask another admin to try from their device. If it works for them, the problem is your app or account.

The price you want is not accepted

How to recognise it: the app refuses the number you type.

Telegram sets a maximum price for paid media, and the app enforces it. Lower the price, or split the content into two posts at lower prices.

A buyer says they paid but cannot see the media

How to recognise it: a reader messages you saying the post is still blurred after paying.

  1. Ask them to update Telegram and reopen the post.
  2. Ask them to check their Stars history to confirm the payment went through.
  3. If the payment shows but the media stays locked, ask them to contact Telegram's support through the app, since only Telegram can see payment details.

Never ask a buyer for their login code or account details to "check" the payment. That is how scammers steal accounts.

Stars do not appear in the balance

How to recognise it: unlocks happened, but the balance looks unchanged.

Balances and withdrawable amounts can be shown separately, and Telegram may hold earnings for a period before they can be withdrawn. Check the transaction history first. If unlocks are missing from the history too, wait a little and check again before contacting support.

Withdrawal is not available

How to recognise it: you have Stars, but the withdrawal option is greyed out or missing.

Withdrawal has conditions set by Telegram, such as waiting periods and minimum amounts, and may depend on other requirements.

Common mistakes

  • Locking everything. A channel with no free value stops growing, and paid posts then reach fewer readers.
  • Vague captions. Buyers cannot see the media first, so the caption has to do the work.
  • Selling content you do not own. It risks copyright complaints and losing the channel.
  • Changing price and content at once. You learn nothing about what worked.
  • Ignoring Telegram's rules. Paid content is still covered by Telegram's terms, and some content is not allowed at all.
  • Expecting full protection. No setting stops a determined copier. Plan for it.
  • Forgetting tax and records. Income from Stars may be taxable. Keep notes from the first sale.
  • Treating Stars as a fixed amount of money. Their value to you depends on how you use or withdraw them, and on crypto prices.

Scams to watch for around paid media

As paid media grows, so do scams built around it.

  • "Pay me Stars and I will unlock all paid posts." Nobody can unlock another channel's paid media for you. This is a scam.
  • Fake support messages. Telegram support will not message you asking for login codes to "release" your Stars.
  • Fake withdrawal services. Use only Telegram's official route through Fragment. A stranger offering to cash out your Stars at a better rate wants your account.
  • Impersonated channels. Scammers copy popular channels and post paid media that delivers nothing. Buyers should check the channel's username carefully.

What to do next

  • Plan which content stays free and which becomes paid, then schedule your first paid post.
  • Learn how readers can also tip your free posts with paid reactions.
  • When your channel is ready for more readers, submit it to TGDirectory. Listing is free, every submission is reviewed by a person, and channel pages show measured figures such as subscribers and views.

FAQ

What can I sell as Telegram paid media?

Photos and videos, singly or as a set in one post. Telegram's documentation says these are currently the only supported types. Text and files cannot be locked this way.

Who receives the Stars from a paid post?

The channel does. Stars are credited to the channel's balance, which the owner manages, not to the individual admin who published the post.

Can I change the price after posting?

Treat the price as fixed once published. If you need a different price, delete the post and publish it again at the new price. Buyers who already unlocked the old post will lose access if you delete it, so think before doing this.

Can buyers save or forward paid media?

What buyers can do with unlocked media depends on your channel's settings and Telegram's rules. Turning on restricted saving blocks forwarding and saving, but not every way of copying.

How do I turn Stars into money?

Channels can exchange Stars for Toncoin through Fragment, subject to Telegram's waiting periods and other conditions. Converting Toncoin to local currency is a separate step. This is general information, not financial advice.

Do I need Telegram Premium to post paid media?

Telegram has not described paid media as a Premium-only feature for channels. If the option does not appear, update the app and check Telegram's help pages for any current requirements.

Summary

Telegram paid media lets channels lock photos and videos behind a price in Stars, with a blurred preview and a readable caption for everyone else. Publish it from the media editor by choosing the paid option and setting a price, and treat the caption as the sales page. Keep most of the channel free, price by testing, protect content where you can, and learn the withdrawal rules before relying on the income. Stars can fund Telegram Ads or be exchanged for Toncoin through Fragment, under Telegram's current conditions.
