When a Telegram Stars refund is possible, who can give it, how to ask a bot with /paysupport, how to report a refusal, and why app-store chargebacks backfire.
Usually not from Telegram itself: Telegram's terms for Stars treat purchases of Stars as final, and it does not refund Stars you bought by accident or no longer want. But if you spent Stars in a bot or mini app that did not deliver what it promised, the developer can refund those Stars to you, and Telegram expects bots to handle such requests. If a developer refuses a fair claim, you can report it to Telegram.
This guide separates the two situations, explains the steps for each, and covers the app-store route that many people try first and regret.
People asking about Stars refunds usually mean one of two things, and the answers differ completely:
The second situation has a clear path. The first rarely does. If you are not sure what Stars are or how they are bought, start with Telegram Stars explained.
Telegram's Terms of Service for Stars, which you can read on Telegram's website, describe Stars sales as final. Telegram does not refund Stars because you changed your mind, bought the wrong amount or tapped by accident. Check the current terms yourself before relying on any summary, including this one, because Telegram updates them.
If you bought Stars through the App Store or Google Play, the store handled the payment, and the store has its own refund process. People sometimes ask the store for a refund or file a chargeback with their bank.
Know the consequences before you do. At the time of writing, Telegram's terms say that when a store or bank reverses a Stars purchase, the matching Stars are removed from your balance, and Telegram does not compensate for that. If you already spent those Stars, the removal can cost you digital items or subscriptions you bought with them. Telegram can also act against accounts that abuse chargebacks.
So a store refund is only realistic for Stars you have not spent, and even then it is the store's decision, not Telegram's.
Example (illustrative only): Nadia meant to buy a small Stars package but tapped a larger one. She has not spent any of it. Telegram will not reverse the purchase. She can ask her app store for a refund, accepting that if it is granted, the Stars will be removed from her balance. Since she has not spent them, she loses nothing else. Had she already used them in a mini app, the reversal could have taken away what she bought.
When you spend Stars in a bot or mini app, you are buying from that bot's developer, not from Telegram. The developer receives the Stars and is responsible for delivering what was sold.
Telegram gives developers a built-in way to return Stars to a buyer. When a developer refunds a payment, the Stars go back to your balance. This is the main route for getting Stars back.
Developers can still refund in these cases if they choose, but they are not expected to.
Telegram expects bots that accept Stars to provide payment support, and the standard way to reach it is the /paysupport command.
If the developer agrees, the Stars return to your balance and appear in your transaction history as a refund.
A clear request is much more likely to be refunded quickly. Example (illustrative only): "On 3 May I paid 250 Stars for the premium export in this bot. The payment went through, but the export button still says locked. Transaction ID is attached. Please unlock it or refund the Stars." It names the item, the amount, the problem and the outcome you want, without accusations.
If /paysupport gets no answer, or the developer refuses a legitimate claim, you can report the problem to Telegram. At the time of writing, Telegram's Stars terms say that after you have tried /paysupport, you can report a bot that is acting in bad faith using Telegram's reporting tools, with the transaction ID from your Stars history.
Telegram does not promise to refund you itself. A report helps Telegram act against bots that take payments without delivering, which protects other users even when it does not return your Stars.
Stars spent on paid posts, paid media or paid reactions in a channel go toward the channel owner. These are usually instant, delivered purchases: once you unlock a paid post, you have it. There is no /paysupport-style route for a channel post. If a paid post misrepresented what it contained, you can report the channel, and you can ask the owner directly. For how these features work, see Telegram paid media posts and Telegram paid reactions.
Some channels and bots sell access as a subscription paid in Stars, renewing each period. A refund for a period that already started is unlikely, so the useful habit is cancelling in time.
Cancelling stops the next charge; it does not return Stars for the current period. Checking the list once a month avoids paying for something you no longer use. See paid Telegram channels explained for how subscription channels work.
Gifts sent with Stars are generally not refunded once delivered. A recipient may be able to convert a regular gift into Stars for themselves, but that benefits them, not the sender. Check the recipient's name before sending. See how to sell or upgrade Telegram gifts for what recipients can do with gifts.
If you sell anything for Stars, a fair refund process protects you as much as your buyers.

Refunds are a common lure. Watch for these:

No. Telegram's Stars terms treat Stars purchases as final, including accidental ones. An app-store refund may be possible but removes the Stars from your balance.
Open the bot, send /paysupport, and describe the problem with the transaction ID from your Stars history. The developer can refund the Stars to your balance.
Report the bot to Telegram with the transaction ID and your evidence. This helps Telegram act against bad-faith bots, though it does not guarantee a refund.
A developer refund returns Stars to your Stars balance, not money to your card.
Generally not after it was delivered. Check the recipient before sending.
Telegram does not refund Stars purchases you regret: its Stars terms treat them as final. If you bought through an app store, the store may refund you, but the Stars are then removed, and spent Stars can cost you what you bought with them. Stars spent in a bot or mini app that failed to deliver are a different case: send /paysupport to the bot with your transaction ID, and the developer can refund the Stars to your balance. If a developer refuses a fair claim, report the bot to Telegram. Never pay or give a login code to anyone offering to "recover" Stars.
