Telegram Paid Reactions Explained

What Telegram's paid Star reactions are, how channel owners turn them on, how readers send them and stay anonymous, and where the Stars end up.

MonetizationTelegram Paid Reactions Explained

Paid reactions, also called Star reactions, let readers support a channel post by reacting with Telegram Stars instead of a free emoji. Channel owners switch them on in the channel's reaction settings. The Stars go to the channel, and each post shows a small leaderboard of top supporters, which readers can choose to stay off.

This guide explains how they work for owners and readers, whether they are worth enabling, and what to check when they do not appear.

What paid reactions are

Ordinary reactions are free emoji that readers tap under a post. They show what people think, but they cost nothing and earn nothing. A paid reaction looks similar but carries Telegram Stars, the in-app currency people buy inside Telegram. When a reader sends one, those Stars move from the reader to the channel.

Think of it as a tip jar attached to every post. Nothing is locked. Every reader can still see the whole post, whether or not anyone pays. That makes paid reactions very different from paid media, where photos and videos stay hidden until someone pays to unlock them. If you want to sell content rather than collect tips, read Telegram paid media.

Where paid reactions appear

Telegram introduced Star reactions for channels. They show up as a star in the row of reactions under a post, usually first in the row. Groups and private chats use ordinary reactions; if you run a group, these steps will not apply.

What Stars are

Stars are bought inside Telegram, often through the phone's app store, and spent on digital goods and services. Owners can later use earned Stars for advertising or exchange them under Telegram's rules. The background is in Telegram Stars explained.

How to turn on paid reactions

You need to be the channel's owner, or an admin with rights to change its settings. Menu names move between app versions, so look for the reactions section in the channel's settings.

On Android and iPhone

  1. Open your channel and tap its name at the top.
  2. Tap the edit option.
  3. Open the reactions setting.
  4. Find the option to enable paid reactions and switch it on.
  5. Save.
  6. Publish or open a post and check that a star appears among the reactions.

On Telegram Desktop

  1. Open the channel and choose to manage or edit it from the menu.
  2. Open the reactions setting.
  3. Switch on paid reactions and save.

On Telegram Web

If your browser version does not show the option, change it from a phone or desktop app. The setting applies across every device once saved.

Paid reactions are separate from your choice of free reactions. You can keep a short list of free emoji, allow all of them, or turn free ones off and keep only the star. For setting up free reactions, see how to set up Telegram channel reactions.

Turning them off again

Return to the same setting and switch paid reactions off. Readers will no longer see the star on posts. Stars already received stay in the channel's balance.

How readers send a paid reaction

From a reader's side, the process is short.

  1. Open a post in a channel that has paid reactions enabled.
  2. Tap the star reaction to send Stars. A single tap sends a small amount.
  3. To choose a larger amount, press and hold the star. A screen opens where the reader can pick how many Stars to send.
  4. Confirm. If the reader does not have enough Stars, Telegram offers to sell them more.

Readers can send paid reactions to the same post more than once. The post shows the total, and the reader's own contribution is counted towards their place on that post's leaderboard.

Like other Stars purchases, paid reactions are generally treated as final once sent. Readers should only send what they are happy to give. For questions about getting Stars back, see Telegram Stars refunds.

The leaderboard and staying anonymous

Each post with paid reactions can show the people who sent the most Stars to it. For many supporters, appearing there is part of the appeal: it is a public thank-you.

Not everyone wants that. Telegram lets readers choose not to appear on the leaderboard when sending paid reactions. In the screen where they pick an amount, there is an option to show or hide their name. Readers who choose to stay hidden still send their Stars; they simply do not appear by name.

Owners should respect that choice. Do not ask anonymous supporters to reveal themselves, and do not shame anyone for not sending Stars.

Where the Stars go

Stars from paid reactions are credited to the channel's balance, not to the admin who wrote the post. Telegram has said that channels receive the full amount of Stars that readers send through reactions. The owner can see the balance and transaction history in the channel's monetization or Stars section.

From there, Telegram offers two main uses:

  • Advertising. Stars can pay for Telegram Ads that promote the channel. See the Telegram Ads platform explained.
  • Withdrawal. Stars can be exchanged for Toncoin through Fragment, Telegram's official platform, subject to waiting periods and other conditions that Telegram sets and can change. The steps are in how to withdraw Telegram Stars.

The amount a buyer paid for Stars and the value an owner gets from them are not the same thing, because buyers pay app store and payment fees, and withdrawal goes through crypto. Telegram Stars value in USD explains how to think about it. This is general information, not financial advice. Income from Stars may also be taxable; see Telegram income taxes for creators and check local rules.

Should you enable paid reactions?

Reasons to switch them on

  • It costs readers nothing who do not use it. Every post stays free.
  • It suits channels with loyal readers. If people often say "thank you" in comments, paid reactions give them a way to show it.
  • It rewards quality posts specifically. Unlike a subscription, the Stars arrive on the posts readers valued most, which tells you what to make more of.
  • It funds growth. Stars can pay for ads that bring new subscribers.

Reasons to wait

  • Very new channels. With few readers, a star with no Stars next to it can look empty. Some owners wait until they have a steady audience.
  • Brand or support channels. A company's announcement channel asking for tips can look odd to customers.
  • Sensitive topics. Channels about crises or help resources may not want any money attached to posts.

There is no rule saying you must decide forever. Try it for a month, then look at the results and your readers' reaction.

Encouraging support without begging

The star is visible on every post. Readers will notice it. A few habits help it feel natural.

  • Mention it once, clearly. A short post explaining that Star reactions now exist, what the Stars will fund, and that everything stays free, is enough.
  • Say what the support pays for. "Stars help us pay for ads so more people find the channel" or "Stars fund the camera for the next series" gives readers a reason.
  • Thank supporters in general terms. A monthly "thank you to everyone who sent Stars" works. Naming people is fine only if they appear on the leaderboard by choice.
  • Do not attach Stars to every post as a call to action. A request under each post turns a tip jar into a toll booth.
  • Never promise rewards you cannot keep. If you offer a shout-out or extra content for supporters, deliver it.

Do not run "send Stars to win" schemes. Promising prizes for paid reactions can look like gambling, which Telegram's rules and many countries' laws treat seriously.

Worked examples

A history channel (example)

A channel posting long, researched threads about local history turns on paid reactions after a year. The owner posts one message explaining that Stars will fund archive fees and promotion. The most detailed posts attract Stars from a handful of regular readers, some named on the leaderboard and some anonymous. The owner uses the Stars to buy ads, and the channel grows.

A daily deals channel (example)

A channel sharing shopping deals tries paid reactions, but readers rarely use them. Its readers come for quick, practical posts, not to support a creator. After a month, the owner turns the feature off and focuses on sponsored posts instead.

Troubleshooting

There is no paid reactions option in the settings

  1. Update Telegram on your device.
  2. Check that you are in a channel's settings, not a group's.
  3. Make sure you are the owner or an admin with rights to change settings.
  4. Try from a different device or app.

If it is still missing, check Telegram's help pages for any current limits on where the feature is available.

The star does not appear under posts

  1. Re-open the reactions setting and confirm paid reactions are on.
  2. Check from another account; some apps take a moment to show the change.
  3. Make sure readers have updated their apps. Very old versions may not show paid reactions.

A reader says their Stars did not arrive

  1. Ask them to check their own Stars transaction history.
  2. Check the channel's history for the same time.
  3. If the reader was charged but nothing arrived, they should contact Telegram's support through the app. Never ask a reader for their login code or account details.

Common mistakes

  • Turning them on with no explanation. Readers wonder if posts are now paid. One short post fixes this.
  • Pushing for Stars under every post. It drives readers away faster than it earns.
  • Treating Stars as cash in hand. Their value depends on withdrawal conditions, fees and crypto prices.
  • Forgetting that the channel owns the balance. Admins who write posts do not receive the Stars personally. Agree within your team how support is shared.
  • Using paid reactions as a prize draw. It risks breaking rules on gambling.

FAQ

Are paid reactions the same as Star reactions?

Yes. Telegram calls them Star reactions in some places and paid reactions in others. Both mean reactions that send Telegram Stars to a channel.

Can I choose who sees that I sent Stars?

You can choose whether to appear on a post's leaderboard of top supporters. If you hide your name, your Stars still count, but you are not listed.

Do paid reactions lock any content?

No. Every post stays free to read. Paid reactions are a way to support a post, not to unlock it. For locked content, channels use paid media.

Who receives the Stars?

The channel's balance does. The owner manages it and can use the Stars for Telegram Ads or exchange them under Telegram's rules.

Can groups use paid reactions?

Paid reactions were introduced for channels. Groups use free reactions. Check Telegram's announcements if you are unsure about a newer version.

Summary

Paid reactions let readers tip channel posts with Telegram Stars while every post stays free. Owners switch them on in the channel's reaction settings, readers tap or hold the star to send Stars, and a per-post leaderboard thanks supporters who choose to be named. The Stars go to the channel's balance, where they can fund Telegram Ads or be exchanged under Telegram's current rules. Explain the feature once, say what support pays for, and never pressure readers to pay.
