Telegram Profile Picture and Channel Avatar Size

What size and shape a Telegram profile picture or channel avatar should be, how the circle crop works, video avatars, and how to fix blurry or badly cropped photos.

Running a ChannelTelegram Profile Picture and Channel Avatar Size

Use a square image for a Telegram profile picture or channel avatar, and keep everything important inside the central circle, because Telegram shows avatars as circles. Telegram does not publish one required pixel size for still photos, so upload a sharp square image of comfortable resolution (a few hundred pixels on each side or more) rather than a tiny one. For video avatars, Telegram's developer documentation says square MPEG-4 videos up to 1080 by 1080 pixels are supported, with 800 by 800 recommended.

This guide covers the shape, size and design choices that matter, how to set the image on each device, and how to fix the common problems.

How Telegram displays avatars

Understanding where your image appears explains most of the advice below.

  • As a circle. In chat lists, message headers, search results and member lists, avatars are cropped to a circle. The corners of your square image are never seen there.
  • Very small. In the chat list, an avatar is shown at roughly fingertip size. Fine details and small text disappear.
  • Larger on the profile page. When someone opens your profile or channel info, the image is shown larger, and on some apps it can be expanded to view in full.
  • Next to many other avatars. In a reader's chat list, your channel sits between friends' photos and other channels. Distinctive colours and simple shapes stand out; busy photos blend in.

The same rules apply to a personal profile, a channel and a group. Bots have avatars too, set through @BotFather.

The right size and shape

Shape: square

Always start with a square image. If you upload a rectangle, Telegram asks you to choose a square area to keep, and you may lose part of the picture. Cropping it yourself beforehand gives you control.

Resolution: big enough to stay sharp

Telegram stores and serves avatars in several resized versions for different screen sizes. A larger, sharp source image gives the app good material to scale down from. A tiny image is enlarged and looks soft on the profile page.

Telegram does not publish a minimum or recommended pixel size for still avatars. As a practical rule, a square image of several hundred pixels per side or more works well on phones and desktops. Very large photos are fine too; Telegram resizes them. If an image is far too small, the app may refuse it with a message that the photo is too small.

File type

Normal photo formats such as JPEG and PNG work when you upload from your gallery or computer. A PNG with a transparent background usually ends up on a solid background, so check how it looks after uploading and add your own background colour if needed.

Video avatars

Telegram supports short looping profile videos. According to Telegram's developer documentation:

  • the video should be square
  • MPEG-4 videos up to 1080 by 1080 pixels are supported
  • 800 by 800 pixels is the recommended resolution
  • you can choose which frame is shown as the still picture in places where the video does not play

Video avatars play when someone opens the profile. In the chat list, the still frame you chose is what most people see, so pick it carefully. Whether a video avatar is available for your account or chat type can depend on the app version, so check in your app.

Emoji and sticker avatars

Telegram also lets you build a profile picture from an emoji or sticker on a coloured background in some apps. Telegram's documentation describes these as a sticker centred on a square background, taking up no more than about two thirds of it, which keeps it clear of the circular crop. If you design your own avatar, the same spacing idea works well: leave a margin around the main shape.

Designing an avatar that works small

Keep the important part in the centre

Imagine a circle that touches the middle of each edge of your square. Everything that matters must sit inside it, with a little breathing room. Logos that run to the corners get clipped.

One simple shape or face

At chat-list size, a single bold shape, letter or face reads best. A group photo, a landscape or a detailed illustration becomes a coloured blur.

Strong contrast

Choose colours that stand out from both light and dark app themes. A mid-grey avatar can disappear against a dark theme, and a white one against a light theme. Test in both.

Avoid small text

A channel name written in small letters on the avatar is unreadable in the chat list and repeats the name shown right next to it. If you use letters, use one or two large ones, like an initial or short monogram.

Make it recognisable as you

For a channel, the avatar is your logo inside Telegram. Use the same mark as on your website or other profiles, so people who know you elsewhere recognise you here.

Worked example: turning a logo into an avatar

An example using a made-up bakery called "Morning Crumb":

  1. The bakery's full logo is a wide wordmark with a small croissant icon on the left. As a circle, the wordmark would be cut off and unreadable.
  2. They take only the croissant icon and place it in the centre of a square canvas.
  3. They give it a warm orange background so it stands out from both light and dark themes.
  4. They leave a margin of empty background around the icon, so the circle crop does not touch it.
  5. They export it as a square image of several hundred pixels per side, upload it, and check it in the chat list on a phone in light and dark mode.

The result is a simple orange circle with a croissant that is recognisable at a glance, which the full logo would never be at that size.

How to set or change the avatar

Menu names change between app versions, so treat these as general directions.

Android and iPhone

  1. Open your profile (for a personal photo) or open the channel or group and tap its name at the top to see its info.
  2. For a channel or group, choose the option to edit it. You need admin rights that include changing the channel's info.
  3. Tap the photo or the option to set a new photo or video.
  4. Choose an image from your gallery, take a new one, or choose an emoji or sticker if the option is shown.
  5. Adjust the square crop so the important part sits in the middle, then confirm.

Desktop

  1. Open the channel or group, then open its info panel.
  2. Open the edit or manage options.
  3. Click the photo area and choose an image file from your computer.
  4. Adjust the crop and save.

Web

The web versions of Telegram also let you change a photo from the chat's info and edit options. Features like video avatars may not be available in every web version, so use a phone or desktop app if an option is missing.

For a bot

Bot avatars are set through @BotFather, using its command for editing a bot's picture. Send it a square image when asked.

Troubleshooting

The avatar looks blurry

How to recognise it: sharp on your computer, soft on the profile page.

  1. Check the source image size. If it was small, find or export a larger version.
  2. Upload from the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo saved from a messaging app, which may already be compressed.
  3. Re-upload and check again after the app has refreshed.

If it is still blurry, the image may contain fine detail that does not survive scaling. Simplify the design.

Part of the logo is cut off

The circle crop is removing the corners. Re-centre the logo on a larger square canvas with empty margin around it, then upload again.

"Photo too small" or the upload is refused

The image is below the size the app accepts. Use a larger source image. Also check the file is a normal image format rather than an unusual one.

The new avatar does not show for others

Telegram updates avatars across devices quickly, but apps cache images. Ask someone to close and reopen the chat or the app. Old cached avatars can also linger on your own devices for a short time; clearing the app's cache can help (see how to clear the Telegram cache). Websites and directories that show your channel's photo usually update the next time they refresh your channel's public information, which may not be instant.

The option to change the photo is missing

In a channel or group, you need an admin right that allows changing the chat's info. Ask the owner to grant it, or ask them to change the photo. See how to add admins to a Telegram channel for how admin rights work.

The colours look different after upload

Telegram may convert or compress the image. Very saturated colours or subtle gradients can shift slightly. Use solid colours and test after upload.

Common mistakes

  • Using a wide logo. It shrinks to nothing or gets cut off. Use an icon or monogram.
  • Putting the channel name in small text on the image. Unreadable at chat-list size and repeated beside the avatar anyway.
  • Changing the avatar often. Readers recognise your channel by its avatar in their chat list. Frequent changes make it harder to find. Change it when you rebrand, not on a whim.
  • Copying another channel's avatar style too closely. It confuses readers and can look like impersonation, which scammers use. Make yours clearly your own; see how to spot Telegram scams for why look-alike channels are a problem.
  • Using images you do not have rights to. A logo, character or photo owned by someone else can get your channel reported.

Before and after you change it: a checklist

  • The image is square and sharp.
  • The important part sits inside the central circle with a margin.
  • It is recognisable at chat-list size.
  • It works on light and dark themes.
  • It has no small text.
  • You own or have the right to use the image.
  • After upload, you checked it on a phone in the chat list and on the profile page.

If your channel is listed in a directory, check the listing after the next update to make sure the new avatar looks right there too. A good avatar helps your channel stand out wherever it appears, including on TGDirectory's category pages. FAQ

What is the best size for a Telegram channel avatar?

Telegram does not publish an exact required size for still images. A square, sharp image of several hundred pixels per side or larger works well. For video avatars, Telegram's documentation recommends 800 by 800 pixels.

Can I use a rectangular image?

You can upload one, but Telegram will make you crop it to a square. Crop it yourself first so you choose what stays.

Why is my avatar a circle when I uploaded a square?

Telegram shows avatars as circles in most places. The full square may be visible when the image is opened in full, but plan your design for the circle.

Can a channel have a video avatar?

Telegram supports video avatars, and they are available in many apps for profiles and chats. Availability can depend on the app and version, so check in your channel's edit options.

Does the avatar affect how my channel ranks in search?

Telegram's search works on text, such as names and usernames, not on images. A clear avatar does make people more likely to tap your channel when they see it in results, which matters just as much.

Can I see old avatars?

People can often see previous profile photos on a personal profile if they have not been deleted. For channels and groups, changes appear as a service message in the chat. Delete old photos you no longer want shown.

Summary

A Telegram avatar should be a sharp square image with its key content inside the central circle, simple enough to recognise at chat-list size and contrasty enough for light and dark themes. Telegram does not set a required pixel size for still photos, so upload a generously sized square image. For video avatars, Telegram's documentation recommends square 800 by 800 pixel MPEG-4 video. Set the avatar from the profile or chat's edit options, check it on a real phone, and keep it stable so readers can find you in their chat list.
