Create a Telegram channel on Android, iPhone or desktop: name, username, public or private, settings explained, a sample welcome post and a first-week checklist.
Creating a Telegram channel takes a few minutes and is free. This guide walks through the steps on every platform, explains each setting, and shows what to do in the first week so the channel starts well.
A channel is a one-to-many feed. Only admins post, and subscribers read. There is no limit on the number of subscribers.
A group is a conversation. Every member can write, and a group can hold up to 200,000 members.
If you want to publish and have readers follow you, choose a channel. If you want people to talk with each other, choose a group. You can also link the two, which is covered below. For a full comparison, read Telegram channel vs group.
The exact position of these buttons can move between app versions. If you cannot find them, look for "New Channel" wherever you start a new chat.
Enter a channel name and, optionally, a description.
The examples below are invented to show the idea.
Here is an example you can adapt:
Short, practical Python tips for beginners. One tip every weekday, with a code example you can try in two minutes.
It says who it is for, what they get and how often. That is all a description needs.
You can change this later. Moving from private to public needs a username, and moving from public to private frees the username for someone else to take.
A public channel needs a @username, which becomes its link: t.me/yourname. Choose something short, readable and related to your topic. It must be unique, and you can change it later. But every change breaks links that were already shared, so pick carefully.
Telegram has rules on length and allowed characters, which can change. The app tells you straight away if a username is not allowed or already taken.
These examples are invented:
Say your username out loud. If someone could spell it wrong after hearing it once, try a simpler one.
Telegram offers to add contacts straight away. When creating a channel you can add up to 200 contacts this way. You can skip this and invite people later with your link.
Only add people who would genuinely want the channel. Being added to a channel you did not ask for is annoying, and many will leave at once.
Open the channel's settings (tap the channel name, then the edit or settings option). Here is what the main options do. Names and positions can change between versions.
Some features, such as statistics, stories and custom colours, depend on the channel's size or its boost level. See Telegram channel boosts explained for how levels work.
Before you invite anyone, publish a few posts so new readers see what the channel is about. Three to five good posts is a sensible start. Then pin a short welcome post that explains the topic and how often you post.
Adapt this to your own channel:
Welcome to Daily Python Tips.
Every weekday you get one short, practical Python tip with an example you can run in two minutes. It is aimed at beginners and people coming back to Python.
What to expect:
If a tip helped you, share it with a friend who is learning too.
Pin it so it is the first thing a new visitor sees. Update it when your posting schedule changes.
Then read how to grow a Telegram channel and how to promote a Telegram channel for the next steps.
The channel's settings include an option to delete it. Deleting removes the channel and its posts for everyone and cannot be undone. If you only want a break, stop posting or make the channel private instead.
Yes. Creating and running a channel is free. Some optional extras, such as Telegram Premium, are paid, but you do not need them to start.
There is no limit on subscribers for a channel. Groups are different and can hold up to 200,000 members.
Yes. The desktop app has the same New Channel option in its menu, and the steps are the same as on Android.
Yes, both can be changed in the settings. Changing the username breaks links that were already shared, so choose it carefully.
Public if you want new readers to find you through search and links. Private if the channel is paid, internal or only for people you invite.
Link a discussion group in the channel settings. Each post then gets a comment thread in that group.
Submit it here. A person reviews every submission. Owners can later claim the listing by adding our bot as an admin, which shows an "Owner verified" badge on the page. That badge is ours, not Telegram's own verification. Read how to get verified on Telegram for the difference.
Menu, New Channel, name and description, public or private, @username, settings, first posts, first readers. The decisions that matter most are a findable name, a username you will keep, and public visibility if you want to grow. Spend the first week publishing a few good posts, pinning a welcome post and sharing the link with people who want it.
Ownership confirmed through our claim process — not an endorsement of their content.
