Bought subscribers look like growth but damage engagement, trust and ad income. Here is why, how to spot them and what to do if you already bought some.
Bought subscribers hurt a Telegram channel because they are fake or inactive accounts that never read your posts. They inflate one number while dragging down the figures that actually matter, like views and engagement. They also damage trust with readers, advertisers and partners, and they can break Telegram's rules.
This guide explains what you are really buying, the specific ways it backfires, how to spot a channel with bought subscribers, and what to do instead.
Services that sell Telegram subscribers usually deliver one of these:
Some services also sell views and reactions. These are produced the same way.
None of these accounts chose your channel because they liked it. That is the root of every problem below.
Engagement rate compares how many people read your posts with how many subscribers you have. Our guide to Telegram channel engagement rate explains it in detail.
When you add fake subscribers, your subscriber count goes up but your views do not. So your engagement rate drops.
An illustrative example, with made-up numbers: a channel with 1,000 real subscribers whose posts each get 400 views reads at 40%. Add 9,000 bought subscribers who never read anything, and the same 400 views now read at 4%. Nothing about the content changed. The channel just looks far less engaging.
On TGDirectory, every channel page shows average views, median views and engagement rate measured from public posts. A large subscriber count with low views stands out clearly.
Anyone serious about buying an ad or doing a cross-promotion checks views against subscribers. A big channel with tiny views is one of the first things they look for. See how to buy ads in Telegram channels without being scammed for the checks buyers make.
Once a channel looks inflated:
The subscriber number you paid for ends up lowering what your channel is worth.
Readers are not blind. A channel showing a large audience with few views, or a flood of identical reactions, feels off. Some readers will conclude the numbers are fake, and wonder what else is.
Trust is the reason people read a channel instead of scrolling past. Bought subscribers spend it for a number.
Telegram removes accounts that break its rules, including spam and fake accounts. Bought accounts may also simply be deleted or leave once the seller's job is done.
That means:
TGDirectory records one real subscriber count per day for each listed channel, so these jumps and drops are visible in a channel's growth chart once enough daily points exist.
Your channel's statistics are how you learn what works. With bought subscribers, those statistics are polluted.
Our guide on Telegram channel statistics explains what clean statistics can tell you.
Using fake accounts or artificial engagement can break Telegram's terms of service. Telegram may act against channels involved in spam or manipulation. Directories, advertisers and partners may also refuse inflated channels. You risk losing far more than you paid.
There is also a scam risk. Some sellers take payment and deliver nothing, or ask for access to your account "to add subscribers". Never give anyone your login code or password. Read never share your Telegram login code.
You may want to check a partner, a channel you plan to advertise in, or a channel you are thinking of buying. Look for several of these signs together:
No single sign proves anything. Some channels have a quiet audience for honest reasons. But several together are a strong warning.
It is not the end of your channel. Be honest with yourself and fix the foundations.
Over time, as real readers join and fake accounts disappear, your figures will start to reflect your actual audience.
Real growth is slower, but it compounds. Readers who like your posts forward them, and forwards bring more readers.
Telegram can act against spam, fake accounts and manipulation under its terms of service. It does not publish exactly when or how it acts. The safest choice is not to buy subscribers at all.
Only to someone who looks at the subscriber count alone. Anyone who compares it with views will see the gap, and that makes the channel look worse, not better.
Usually not. People paid to join rarely read anything and often leave or mute the channel. The effect on engagement is the same.
You may be able to remove individual subscribers manually in the channel's subscriber list, but this is slow and you cannot always tell who is fake. Many will disappear over time. Avoid paid "cleaning" services.
Telegram does not publish how search ranking works. Even if size played a part, the damage to engagement, trust and ad value outweighs any possible gain.
Bought subscribers are a number, not an audience. They lower your engagement rate, put off advertisers and partners, make readers suspicious, can vanish suddenly and may break Telegram's rules. They also blur the statistics you need to improve. If you have already bought some, stop, focus on real readers and judge progress by views. Real growth is slower, but it is the only kind that lasts.
