Where the subscriber, view, engagement and growth figures on TGDirectory channel pages come from, what each one means, and why some are sometimes missing.
TGDirectory reads every channel statistic from the public posts Telegram shows on the channel's web preview. Each figure on a channel page is either measured from that source or not shown at all. Nothing is estimated, seeded or back-filled to make a page look fuller.
This guide explains where each number comes from, what it can and cannot tell you, and why a page sometimes shows fewer figures than you expect.
Telegram offers a public web preview for public channels. It shows the channel's name, its subscriber count and a set of its recent posts, each with the view count Telegram displays under it.
TGDirectory reads that preview. It does not use private data, it does not need to join the channel, and it does not ask the owner for numbers. What you see on a channel page is what Telegram itself shows publicly, turned into a few simple figures.
That choice has two consequences worth knowing:
This is the subscriber count Telegram shows for the channel. Channels on Telegram can have unlimited subscribers, so the number can be anything from a handful to very large. If the count cannot be read, the page shows nothing rather than a zero. A zero would wrongly suggest an empty channel.
This is the mean of the view counts shown under the recent public posts. It tells you roughly how many views a typical post collects.
This is the middle value of those same view counts. Put the posts in order from fewest to most views, and the median is the one in the middle. It matters because one viral post can pull the average far up. The median ignores that single outlier, so it often gives a steadier picture of an ordinary post.
This is average views divided by subscribers. It is derived from the two figures above, not typed in.
Example only: a channel showing 10,000 subscribers and an average of 2,000 views per post would have an engagement rate of 2,000 ÷ 10,000, which is 20%. These numbers are made up to show the arithmetic. They are not a benchmark.
For a deeper look at what this ratio means and its limits, read what Telegram channel engagement rate means.
This is how often the channel posts, measured from the dates of the public posts we can see. It helps you judge whether a channel posts several times a day or only now and then.
This is the date of the newest public post we can see. A channel that has not posted in a long time may be inactive, even if its subscriber count is high.
The growth chart is built from one real subscriber count per day, recorded since we started watching the channel. There is no history before that point. We do not draw a curve for months we never observed.
The chart only appears once enough real daily points exist. Until then, the page does not show a chart. A line through two dots would look like a trend without being one.
The rule behind every figure is simple: measured, or not shown. In practice that means:
We explain the reasoning in why TGDirectory never shows invented numbers.
An empty space on a channel page is a fact, not an error. Common reasons include:
In each case the page shows less rather than filling the gap with a guess.
Numbers are most useful when you read them together. A simple routine:
If you want to understand the statistics Telegram itself gives to channel admins, see Telegram channel statistics explained.
No. The figures are read from Telegram's public web preview. Nobody can type in a different number, including us.
The public preview may not show view counts for that channel's posts. Without them, we cannot calculate views or engagement rate, so those figures are left out.
The chart needs enough real daily subscriber counts. If we started watching the channel recently, the chart appears later, once those points exist.
No. The chart only covers days we actually recorded. Anything earlier was never observed, so it is not drawn.
"Best Telegram Channels" ranks by real subscriber count, so that figure matters there. You can see it on the best Telegram channels ranking. The "Top rated" list ranks by reader ratings instead.
Private channels have no public web preview, so these figures cannot be read for them.
Every statistic on a TGDirectory channel page comes from the public posts Telegram shows on the channel's web preview. Subscribers, average and median views, engagement rate, posts per week, last post date and the growth chart are each measured or left out. Nothing is estimated or back-filled. Read the figures together, treat blanks as "not measured", and remember the growth chart starts when we started watching.
