How to Change a Telegram Channel's Link Without Losing Subscribers

Change your channel's username and t.me link safely: what happens to subscribers, what breaks, and a step-by-step plan to move without confusion.

Running a ChannelHow to Change a Telegram Channel's Link Without Losing Subscribers

You change a public Telegram channel's link by changing its username in the channel's settings. Your subscribers stay subscribed, because they are attached to the channel, not to the link. What breaks is every old t.me link you shared elsewhere, so the real work is planning the switch and updating those links.

This guide covers what changes, what does not, and a simple plan for moving to a new link.

What a channel link actually is

A public channel has a username, like @examplechannel. Telegram turns that into a link: t.me/examplechannel. The username and the link are the same thing seen two ways.

Private channels have no username. They use invite links instead, which you manage separately. If your channel is private, see our Telegram invite links guide.

What happens when you change the username

What stays the same

  • Your subscribers. Nobody is removed. They keep receiving posts.
  • Your posts. All old posts stay in the channel.
  • Your channel's name, picture and description. These are separate from the username.
  • Admins and settings. Nothing else changes.

What changes

  • The old t.me link stops pointing to your channel. Anyone who clicks it will not reach you.
  • The old username is released. After a change, someone else may be able to claim it.
  • Links to individual posts change. Post links include the username, so old post links shared elsewhere may stop working.
  • Mentions of @oldname in other chats will no longer lead to your channel.

So you do not lose subscribers directly. You can lose future subscribers who try an old link and hit a dead end.

How to change your channel's link

  1. Open your channel and tap its name to open the channel info.
  2. Open the channel's settings.
  3. Find the channel type or link setting, where the username is shown.
  4. Replace the current username with the new one.
  5. Wait for Telegram to confirm that the new username is available.
  6. Save.

The new link starts working right away. Telegram's rules on usernames, such as allowed characters and minimum length, are shown in the app when you type. If a name is refused, the app will say why.

About collectible usernames

Some usernames are sold as collectibles on Fragment, Telegram's marketplace for usernames and numbers. These follow their own rules. If your current username is a collectible, read Telegram usernames on Fragment before you change anything, so you understand what happens to it.

A safe plan for changing your link

A link change takes seconds. Preparing well makes the difference.

Before the change

  1. Pick the new username carefully. It should be short, easy to spell and unlikely to need changing again.
  2. Check it is free. Type it into the username field without saving to see whether it is available.
  3. List every place your link appears. Website, email signature, social profiles, other Telegram channels, directories, printed material, ads and partner posts.
  4. Tell your subscribers. Post a short announcement: the new link, the date, and that they do not need to do anything.
  5. Contact partners. If other channels have promoted you with your link, let them know so they can update pinned or saved posts.

On the day

  1. Change the username in the channel's settings.
  2. Open the new link from another account to confirm it works.
  3. Pin a post with the new link for a while.
  4. Start updating the links on your list, most-visited places first.

After the change

  1. Watch the old username. Once it is released, someone else may claim it. Remind subscribers that your only official link is the new one.
  2. Keep updating old links as you find them.
  3. Update directory listings. If your channel is listed on TGDirectory, the listing needs the new handle so the page and its measured figures keep working.

Choosing a username you will not need to change again

The best link change is the last one. A few questions help you pick a name that lasts.

  • Does it still fit if your topic widens? A name tied to one narrow subject can feel wrong a year later.
  • Can someone type it after hearing it once? Say it aloud. If you have to spell it out, simplify it.
  • Is it close to your channel's display name? Readers trust a link that matches the name they see.
  • Does it avoid dates and numbers? A year in a username ages quickly.
  • Could it be confused with another channel? Names that look like a well-known brand invite confusion and reports.

How this affects your TGDirectory listing

TGDirectory reads a channel's measured figures, such as subscribers and views per post, from the public posts Telegram shows on the channel's web preview. That preview is found through the username. If the username changes and the listing is not updated, we can no longer read the channel at the old address.

So if your listing exists, make sure it is updated with the new handle after the change. Our guide on claiming your channel on TGDirectory explains how claiming works. If you have not listed your channel yet, you can submit it for free. Every submission is reviewed by a person before it appears.

Common mistakes

  • Changing the username without telling anyone. Subscribers are fine, but everyone outside the channel loses the way in.
  • Changing it often. Each change breaks links again and makes the channel harder to remember.
  • Forgetting post links. Old links to specific posts, shared on websites or in other chats, may stop working.
  • Losing the old name to an impersonator. Released usernames can be claimed by others. Scammers sometimes take an old name to look like the original channel. Warn your audience to check the new link carefully. See how to spot Telegram scams.
  • Picking a name that is hard to spell. A clever username that people mistype costs you visits.
  • Confusing the channel name with the username. Changing the display name does not change the link, and the other way round.

FAQ

Will my subscribers be notified when I change the link?

Not in a way you can rely on. Post your own announcement so everyone knows the new link.

Can I get my old username back?

Only if nobody else has taken it in the meantime. Once released, it may be claimed by another user.

Does changing the channel name also change the link?

No. The name shown at the top of the channel and the username in the link are separate. You can change either without affecting the other.

Will changing the link affect how my channel appears in Telegram search?

Search uses both your name and username, so results may change. A clear username that matches your topic can help. Our guide on Telegram SEO covers search in more detail.

Can a private channel change its link?

A private channel uses invite links rather than a username. You can create new invite links and revoke old ones in the channel's settings.

Summary

Changing a Telegram channel's link means changing its username. Subscribers stay, posts stay, and the new link works immediately. What breaks are the old links you shared elsewhere, and the old username may be taken by someone else. Plan the change, announce it, update every link you can find, and keep your directory listings current.
