What the clock, one tick and two ticks mean on Telegram messages, how they work in groups, why a message can stay on one tick, and what ticks cannot tell you.
On Telegram, one tick means your message has reached Telegram's servers and been sent, and two ticks mean the recipient has opened the chat and read it. A small clock means the message is still on its way from your device to the server. There is no separate tick for "delivered to their phone", which is why one tick can last a long time without anything being wrong.
Every message you send shows one of these next to its time.
A small clock icon means the message has not left your device yet. Telegram is still trying to send it. This is normal for a moment on a slow connection, or for longer while a large photo or video uploads.
One tick means the message has reached Telegram's cloud. From that point it is stored safely on Telegram's servers, and the recipient can receive it on any of their devices. You can close the app, switch off your phone or lose signal, and the message still arrives.
Two ticks mean the recipient has opened the chat and read the message. In a private chat, the second tick appears when the other person views the chat with your message in it.
A red or warning icon instead of a tick means the message failed to send. It never reached the server. Tap the icon to retry or delete it.
Some messaging apps use one tick for "sent to the server", two ticks for "delivered to the phone" and a colour change for "read". Telegram works differently, because it is a cloud service.
Your message is not delivered to one phone. It is stored in the cloud and appears on whichever of the recipient's devices they open next: phone, tablet, computer or browser. "Delivered to the device" does not mean much when there may be several devices, or none switched on. So Telegram keeps it simple: sent to the cloud, then read.
That is why one tick on Telegram is not a warning sign. It does not mean the message is stuck. It means it is waiting to be read.
If a message has one tick for a long time, the recipient has not opened the chat yet. The reasons are usually ordinary.
You cannot tell these apart from the tick alone. A single tick that lasts weeks, combined with a status of "last seen a long time ago" and a missing profile photo, makes a block more likely. Our guide on what "last seen recently" means explains those status labels.
If the clock does not turn into a tick, the message has not reached Telegram. The cause is on your side.
If messages fail with a warning sign in some chats but not others, you may lack permission to post there, for example in a group where members cannot send media, or your account may be limited. Our guide on Telegram account bans and appeals explains limits.
Groups follow the same idea with one difference.
Two ticks do not mean everyone has read it. In a large group, one member opening the chat is enough.
In smaller groups, newer versions of Telegram can show which members have seen a recent message. Long-press or right-click your message and look for the list of who has seen it. Telegram only offers this in groups below a certain size and for fairly recent messages, and the exact limits can change. In large groups, there is no way to see who read a message.
Channels do not use ticks in a meaningful way for readers. Instead, each post shows a view count, usually marked with an eye icon. That count rises as people see the post.
Views are not the same as reads in a private chat. A view is counted when the post is displayed to a subscriber, whether or not they read it closely. Channel owners can learn more from our guide on Telegram channel statistics and the engagement rate, which compares average views to subscribers.
Telegram does not offer a switch to stop the second tick in private chats. When someone opens a chat with your unread message, it shows as read.
What you can control:
Telegram lets you mark a chat as unread for yourself, as a reminder to come back to it. This only affects your own chat list. It does not remove the second tick the sender already sees.
Secret chats use the same tick system. One tick means the message was sent, and two ticks mean it was read. Because a secret chat exists only on the two devices involved, a message there is tied to that one device of the recipient, not to all of their devices. Our guide to Telegram secret chats explains how they differ from normal cloud chats.
Ticks are useful, but people read more into them than they can carry.
If something is urgent, a phone call or a short follow-up message is more reliable than watching ticks.
These are illustrative scenarios.
Kim sends a friend a message in the morning. It stays on one tick all day. In the evening the friend opens Telegram and the second tick appears. The friend had been working and had notifications muted. Nothing was wrong.
Leo sends a long video while on a train. The clock stays for minutes. The upload is struggling with weak signal. Once he reaches a station with good signal, the clock turns into one tick and the video is sent.
A manager posts an update in a twenty-person group and sees two ticks. Only one colleague has opened it so far. To see who has, the manager long-presses the message and checks the list of members who have seen it, which this smaller group supports.
It means your message reached Telegram's servers and was sent. The recipient has not read it yet.
They mean the recipient opened the chat and read the message. In a group, they mean at least one member read it.
The message has not reached Telegram's servers yet. Check your connection, wait for large uploads to finish, and restart the app if needed.
Reading the preview in a notification does not mark a message as read, so yes, they may have seen part of it. Opening the chat marks it as read.
They have not opened it. That can be because they rarely use Telegram, archived or muted the chat, or blocked you. Telegram does not say which.
Not in a useful way for readers. Channel posts show a view count instead, which rises as subscribers see the post.
A clock means your message is still leaving your device, one tick means it reached Telegram's cloud and was sent, and two ticks mean it was read. Telegram has no "delivered" stage because messages live in the cloud and appear on whichever device the recipient opens. One tick for a long time usually just means unread; in groups, two ticks mean at least one member read it; channels use view counts instead. Read receipts cannot be switched off in private chats, but read times and last seen can be hidden.
