The real reasons Telegram stops you adding someone to a group, from privacy settings and admin rights to spam limits, with a fix for each and the invite-link alternative.
Most of the time you cannot add someone to a Telegram group because of their privacy settings, which let people decide who may add them to groups, or because the group's admins have not given you the right to add members. Other causes are a spam limit on your account, the person having left or been removed from that group before, and Telegram slowing you down after many adds in a row. In almost every case an invite link solves it, because it lets the person join on their own.
Telegram gives people a lot of control over who can put them into chats. Adding someone to a group is not like adding a contact to a list: it places them in a conversation they did not choose. So several checks happen every time you tap add:
If any check fails, the add fails. Each cause below matches one of these checks. The error message you see, or the option Telegram offers instead, usually tells you which one.
Read the exact message Telegram shows when the add fails. It narrows things down quickly.
Then work through the matching cause.
Telegram's privacy and security settings include an option for who can add you to groups and channels. People can allow everybody, only their contacts, or nobody, and can add exceptions for specific people. Many people choose contacts only, precisely to avoid being added to spam groups.
How to recognise it. Telegram tells you that you cannot add this person because of their privacy settings, and may offer to send them an invite link instead. Other people can be added to the same group without trouble.
How to fix it.
If it still does not work. If you cannot message them privately either, they may have restricted who can message them, or blocked you. Ask a mutual contact to pass on the invite link.
This setting protects people. It is worth respecting rather than working around; the person still gets to decide.
Exceptions make it look personal when it often is not. Someone may allow only contacts, or may allow everybody except certain people. From your side, both look the same: the add fails and Telegram offers a link. You cannot tell whether the setting applies to everyone or to you specifically, so there is no point reading anything into it.
In groups, admins decide whether ordinary members can add people. Many group admins switch this off to stop members flooding the group with new accounts.
How to recognise it. The option to add members is missing from the group's info screen, or greyed out. Other members also cannot add anyone. Admins can.
How to fix it.
Admins have individual rights. An admin can be given most rights but not the one for inviting users.
For a fuller explanation of permissions, see our guide on slow mode and member restrictions.
Telegram limits accounts that it suspects of spam, often after other people report them. One of the first things a limited account loses is the ability to add people to groups and channels.
How to recognise it. You cannot add anyone to any group, including groups where you are the owner. You may also be unable to message people who are not in your contacts.
How to fix it.
If it still does not work. If @SpamBot says your account is free of limits, the problem is elsewhere. Go back to Cause 1 and Cause 2.
Mass adding is itself one of the most common reasons accounts get limited, so a limit after adding many people at once is not a coincidence. Our guide on Telegram account bans and appeals explains limits in more detail.
Telegram protects people who chose to leave a group from being pulled straight back in. If someone left a group, you may only be able to add them back if you are mutual contacts, meaning you both have each other's phone numbers saved.
How to recognise it. Telegram shows a message saying that, because this person left the group, only a mutual contact can add them back. You can add other people to the same group without problems.
How to fix it.
If it still does not work. Respect it. They may have left on purpose, and a link lets them decide.
When someone is removed from a group by an admin, Telegram usually keeps them on the group's list of removed users. While they are on it, they cannot join through links and cannot be added back by ordinary members.
How to recognise it. The add fails for one person only. The group's list of removed users includes them.
How to fix it (admins).
If you are not an admin. Ask an admin. Do not try to re-add someone who was removed without checking why; there may be a reason.
If you run a group and need a consistent approach to removals and second chances, see handling conflicts and bans in Telegram groups.
Telegram slows down accounts that perform the same action many times in a short period. Adding people is one of those actions.
How to recognise it. Adding worked for the first several people, then stopped. Telegram may show a message about too many attempts and ask you to wait.
How to fix it.
Why it matters. Rapid mass adding looks like spam to Telegram and to the people being added, who may report the group. Repeated slowdowns can lead to a proper spam limit, which is Cause 3.
Telegram groups can hold up to 200,000 members. A group at that size cannot accept more.
How to recognise it. The group is very large, and adds and link joins both fail with a message about the member limit.
How to fix it.
Our comparison of Telegram channels and groups explains how the two can work together.
Sometimes the problem comes before the add: the person does not appear in the list.
How to recognise it. When you open the add members screen, the person is not in your contacts and search does not find them.
Why it happens.

Bots follow their own rules.
How to recognise it. The person you are adding is a bot, and the add fails or the bot does not respond after joining.

Our guide on adding a bot to a Telegram channel or group walks through it step by step.
Channels and groups look similar, but adding works differently. In a channel, Telegram limits how many people an admin can add by hand. Beyond that, people have to join themselves, usually through a public link or an invite link.
How to recognise it. You are managing a channel, not a group, and adding worked for a while before stopping.
How to fix it.
Some groups use invite links that require admin approval. People who use such a link send a join request instead of entering immediately.
How to recognise it. The person says they tapped the link and are waiting, and they do not appear in the member list.
How to fix it.
Our guide to Telegram invite links explains the different link types.
Rarely, the problem is the app itself.
How to recognise it. The add fails on one device but works on another, or the add screen will not load.
How to fix it.
Sometimes the person is added successfully, and a different problem appears straight after. These are the ones people most often mistake for a failed add.
Groups have a setting for whether new members can see the chat history from before they joined. If it is hidden, a new member starts with an empty chat and may think they were not really added. An admin can change the setting in the group's settings if older messages should be visible.
If the group's default permissions stop members sending messages, or slow mode is on, a newly added person may be unable to write or may have to wait between messages. That is the group working as configured.
People who were added without being asked often leave quickly, and some report the group as they go. If your additions keep leaving, that is a strong sign an invite link with a short explanation would work better.
Someone who has muted notifications for new groups, or archived the chat, may not notice they were added. Send them a short private message so they know where to look. Our guide on pinning, muting and archiving chats explains how these settings hide new chats.
If you are not sure whether the option is missing or just somewhere else, check in the right place for your device. Labels can change between versions, but the location is broadly stable.
Open the group, tap its name at the top to open the info screen, and look for the option to add members near the member list. If you are an admin, the group's edit screen also gives access to members, permissions and invite links.
Open the group, tap its name or picture at the top, and look for the add members option above the member list. Admin settings sit behind the edit button on the same screen.
Open the group and click its name to open the info panel, or use the menu in the top corner of the chat. The add members option appears there for people who have the right.
Telegram's web versions offer the same basic options in the group's info panel, though layouts differ between them. If an option seems missing on the web, check in a mobile app before assuming you lack the right.
If the option is absent in every app, you do not have the right to add members in that group, which is Cause 2.
When you create a new group, Telegram asks you to choose members from your contacts straight away, and you can add up to 200 at that point. The same privacy checks apply: people whose settings do not allow you to add them will not be included, and Telegram may offer to send them a link instead.
It is often better to create the group with a few people you know want to be there, then share an invite link with everyone else. A group created with a hundred surprised people tends to start with a wave of departures and reports.
A common reason for mass adding is moving an existing community, such as a class, club or customer group, onto Telegram. Doing it with links instead of adds is slower by a day or two and far smoother.
People who join this way chose to come, so they are far more likely to stay and take part.
Channel owners sometimes want to bring their subscribers into a discussion group. Telegram does not offer a way to move a channel's subscribers into a group in bulk, and you cannot see most subscribers' details to add them one by one.
The workable approach is to link the group as the channel's discussion group, so comments under posts lead readers into it, and to post the group's invite link in the channel from time to time. Readers who want to talk will follow it.
Even when adding works, an invite link is often the better way to bring people in.
To create one:
Named links show how many people joined through each one, so you learn which places actually bring members.
These scenarios are illustrative.
Lena creates a reunion group and tries to add forty classmates. The first dozen work. Then some adds fail because of privacy settings, and soon Telegram asks her to wait. She stops, creates an invite link, and posts it in the old class chat on another app and sends it to the rest privately. Most classmates join over the next few days, and nobody reports the group.
Omar, a member of a hobby group, wants to add a friend but cannot find the add option. The admins have switched off adding for members after a spam wave. He asks an admin, who sends him the group's invite link to share. His friend joins the same day.
A former member who was removed during an argument asks to rejoin. Members try to add him and fail. The admin finds him on the removed users list, decides he can return, removes him from the list and sends him a link.
Run through this if people regularly struggle to join your group:
Their privacy settings do not allow you to add them directly. Telegram offers to send them an invite link instead, so they can decide whether to join.
Telegram protects people who left a group from being added back by just anyone. Unless you are mutual contacts, send them an invite link so they can rejoin if they want.
A group can hold up to 200,000 members. In practice, Telegram also slows down accounts that add many people in a short time, so for large numbers an invite link is the realistic route.
No. Telegram does not tell you whether a failed add is due to someone's general privacy setting or a choice about you specifically. An invite link works the same either way.
Rights are set per group. One group may let members add people while another reserves it for admins. Your account status is the same for both, so the difference is the group's permissions.
Generally yes, because the other person joins by their own action. Sharing a link with people who did not ask for it can still lead to reports, so share it where it is welcome.
When an add fails, read Telegram's message first. Privacy settings, missing rights and a spam limit cover most cases; an earlier departure or removal, a slowdown after many adds, a full group, a bot's own settings, channel rules and pending join requests cover the rest. The fix is nearly always the same: send an invite link and let people join themselves. It respects their choice, protects your account from limits, and keeps the group free of people who never wanted to be there.
