Find out why a Telegram group won't let you write, how to tell which restriction applies to you, and what members and admins can do about each one.
If you cannot send messages in a Telegram group, it is almost always because of a setting rather than a fault. The admins may have closed messaging for everyone, restricted you personally, turned on slow mode, limited certain kinds of messages, or require you to join or verify first. Less often, your own account is limited by Telegram, or a connection problem stops messages leaving your phone.
The text where the message field should be usually tells you which one it is. This guide explains how to read those signs, then goes through each cause with what you can do as a member and, where relevant, what an admin can change.
Before changing anything, look at the bottom of the chat. Telegram replaces or changes the input field depending on the reason. Typical signs:
Note the exact wording on your screen. It narrows the problem to one or two causes and saves you from trying fixes that cannot help.
How to recognise it. You see a "Join" or "Join group" button at the bottom instead of a text field. This often happens when you open a group from a link, a search result or a preview.
What to do
If it does not work. If your join request is pending, there is nothing to do but wait or contact an admin another way. Sending repeated requests does not speed it up.
Many channels link a group for comments. Some of these groups are set so that you must join the group before you can comment or write in it. If you try to comment on a channel post and are told to join first, that is the reason. Joining the linked group solves it. The setting belongs to the group, so only its admins can change it.
How to recognise it. Nobody except admins has posted recently, and the input area says members cannot send messages, or is missing entirely. This is common in announcement groups, support groups outside opening hours, and groups that close overnight.
What is going on. Admins can switch off the "send messages" permission for all members at once. The group then works like a channel: everyone can read, only admins write.
What you can do as a member
What admins can do. In the group's settings, open the permissions section and turn on sending messages for members. You can also allow messages but restrict media, links or stickers separately.
How to recognise it. Other members chat normally, but your input field says that admins have restricted you, sometimes with an end date. You may have broken a rule, been caught by an automatic filter, or been restricted by mistake.
What is going on. Admins can restrict an individual member: prevent them sending messages entirely, or only certain types, either permanently or until a set time. A temporary restriction ends on its own.
What you can do
If it does not work. If admins do not respond, accept the decision. Each group is run by its admins, and Telegram does not overrule group-level moderation.
What admins can do. In the member list, open the member's permissions or the list of restricted users, and lift the restriction or shorten it. Our guide on handling conflicts and bans in groups covers fair ways to use restrictions.
How to recognise it. You sent one message, and the next one is refused with a countdown or a note about slow mode. The input field may show a timer.
What is going on. Slow mode sets a minimum gap between messages from each member. It keeps busy groups readable and reduces spam. Admins are not affected by it.
What to do
What admins can do. Slow mode is set in the group's permissions. Choose a shorter interval or turn it off. Details in slow mode and member restrictions.
How to recognise it. Text sends fine, but stickers, GIFs, photos, files, voice messages, video messages, polls or links are refused or the buttons are greyed out. Sometimes a message containing a link simply fails.
What is going on. Admins can allow or block each type of content separately. Many groups block links to stop spam, block stickers to keep chat readable, or block voice messages because members find them hard to follow.
What to do
What admins can do. In the group's permissions, adjust each content type. Consider allowing links for members who have been in the group for a while, using a moderation bot if you need that kind of rule.
How to recognise it. You just joined, and a bot greeted you with a button such as "I am not a robot", a question, or a request to press something within a time limit. Until you do, you cannot write.
What is going on. Many groups use bots that restrict new members until they prove they are human. This blocks automated spam accounts.
What to do
Stay alert. A real captcha asks you to press a button in the group or answer a simple question. It never asks for your phone number, login code or password, and never asks you to open a website and sign in. That is a scam. Read how to spot Telegram scams.
How to recognise it. The group has topics, like separate threads, and you can write in some but not in one particular topic. The input area may say the topic is closed.
What is going on. In groups with topics, admins can close a topic so only admins can post in it. Announcement or rules topics are often closed. The General topic can also be hidden or limited.
What to do
What admins can do. Reopen the topic from its menu, or create a new open topic for discussion. More in how to use topics in Telegram groups.
How to recognise it. Instead of a plain send button, the input area shows a price in Telegram Stars, or sending opens a payment confirmation.
What is going on. Telegram allows some groups to charge members Stars for each message, which admins use to reduce spam or to earn from a popular community. Admins and exempt members are not charged.
What to do
Stars are Telegram's in-app currency, bought inside the app. Only pay groups you trust, and remember that each message costs the price shown.
How to recognise it. The group disappears from your list, or opening it shows that you were removed, or the Join button fails when you try to come back.
What is going on. An admin removed you. A removed member can sometimes rejoin through a link; a banned member cannot until an admin lifts the ban.
What to do
How to recognise it. You cannot send messages in several groups at once, or you get an error about your account when sending. You might also be unable to message people who are not your contacts. This usually follows reports that your account sent spam.
What is going on. When enough people report an account for spam, Telegram may limit what it can do for a period. This is separate from any group's settings and affects you everywhere.
What to do
If it does not work. If the restriction is permanent or your account has been banned, read Telegram account banned for what you can still do.
How to recognise it. You can type and press send, but the message shows a clock icon and never goes through, or turns into an error mark. This happens in every chat, not only the group.
What is going on. Your phone cannot reach Telegram. The group is fine.
What to do
For a full walkthrough, see Telegram stuck on Connecting.
How to recognise it. The chat shows a service message saying the group was upgraded or moved, the history stops at a point, and you cannot write in it.
What is going on. Older small groups are sometimes upgraded to larger supergroups. Depending on how it happened, you may see the old chat as a read-only history while the active group continues elsewhere. A group can also be deleted by its owner, which leaves nothing to write in.
What to do
How to recognise it. You sent many messages or forwarded many posts quickly, and Telegram refuses more, sometimes with a message to wait. It clears after some time.
What is going on. Telegram limits how fast any account can perform some actions. Posting the same message in many groups in a short time is a classic spam pattern and can lead to temporary limits.
What to do
If you use automation or a third-party tool that posts for you, check whether it is sending far more than you think.
Sometimes the input field looks normal and the message simply fails, or the wording is vague. Work through these tests in order. Each one rules out a group of causes.
Do these in order rather than at random. Each step is quick, and together they cover nearly every case.
If the reason is a group setting, admins are the only people who can help. A considerate message gets a faster answer.
Find the admins. Open the group info and look at the member list. Admins are usually shown at the top or labelled with a title such as "admin" or "owner". Many groups also name a contact in the description or pinned message.
Check the rules first. Admins answer the same questions often. If the pinned message already explains that links are banned or that the group closes at night, you have your answer.
Write once, clearly. A short message works best, for example:
Example only: "Hi, I'm a member of the Cycling Club group. Since yesterday I can't send any messages; it says admins have restricted me. I'm not sure what I did. Could you check?"
Be patient. Admins are often volunteers. If you get no reply, do not message every admin in turn or create a fuss in other groups. Some admins do not accept private messages at all, and their privacy settings may stop you writing to them.
The most common reason members cannot write is that admins locked a group down during a spam wave and never relaxed it. A balanced setup protects the group without silencing real people.
For a complete moderation approach, read how to moderate a large Telegram group.
If many members message you to ask why they cannot write, your settings may be stricter than you intend. Review them now and then:
Some groups let members who boost the group ignore certain restrictions, such as slow mode. If you use this, say so in your rules, so members understand why some people can post more freely.
Example only. Tom opens a product's support group at 11 p.m. and finds no text field. Earlier in the day, he chatted there.
Nothing is wrong with his account; the group is closed.
Example only. Nadia shares a useful article link in a hobby group. The message fails, but her text messages work.
Example only. Raj cannot send messages in any public group he joins, and he cannot message a new acquaintance.
Once you know the cause, decide whether the group is still worth your time.
You are either not a member, the admins made the group read-only, you have a personal restriction, or slow mode or a captcha is holding you. The text at the bottom of the chat tells you which.
The input area usually says that admins restricted you, sometimes with an end date. If others are chatting normally and you cannot, a personal restriction is likely.
As long as the admin set. Some end at a date shown on screen; others last until an admin lifts them.
No. Group restrictions are set by the group's admins. Only they can change them. Telegram support deals with account-level limits.
The admins have restricted those content types. Send the information as text or ask an admin.
Your account is probably limited by Telegram, often after spam reports. Check with @SpamBot.
When a Telegram group will not let you write, read the input area first. A Join button means you are not a member; a "not allowed" note means the group is read-only; a restriction notice means an admin limited you; a timer means slow mode; greyed-out buttons mean that type of content is blocked. Captcha bots, closed topics, paid messages, removal, account limits and connection problems are the other causes, each with its own fix. Members can wait, follow the rules or ask an admin politely; admins can review permissions, restrictions and exceptions in the group's settings.
