Comments Not Showing on Telegram Channel Posts

Why the comment button is missing or comments vanish on Telegram channel posts, how to recognise each cause, and step-by-step fixes for admins and readers.

Running a ChannelComments Not Showing on Telegram Channel Posts

Comments on a Telegram channel only exist when the channel is linked to a discussion group, so a missing comment button almost always means that link is absent, broken, or does not cover the post you are looking at. When the button is there but comments still do not appear, the cause is usually inside the discussion group: its permissions, a restriction on the reader, or something deleting messages. This guide walks through every cause separately, with how to recognise it and how to fix it.

How channel comments actually work

Before fixing anything, it helps to know what is happening behind the button, because nearly every problem follows from it.

A Telegram channel is a one-way broadcast. Only admins can post, and subscribers cannot reply inside the channel itself. Comments are a bridge to a separate chat: a group that the channel owner links as its discussion group.

Once a group is linked, three things happen for every new post:

  1. You publish a post in the channel.
  2. Telegram automatically forwards a copy of that post into the linked discussion group.
  3. The comment button under the channel post opens a thread of replies to that forwarded copy.

So a "comment" is really a reply in the discussion group, displayed as a thread under the channel post. That explains most of the strange behaviour people report:

  • If no group is linked, there is nothing for the comment button to open, so it does not appear.
  • If the forwarded copy in the group disappears, the thread has nothing to hang from.
  • If a reader is not allowed to write in the group, they cannot write a comment either, even though they are looking at the channel.
  • If someone deletes replies in the group, they disappear from under the channel post too.

Keep this model in mind. When something unusual happens, ask yourself "what is happening in the discussion group?" and you will usually find the answer. If you have not set comments up yet, start with our guide on how to enable comments on a Telegram channel.

Before you start: narrow it down in two minutes

The fastest way to a fix is to work out which pattern you are seeing. Answer these four questions first.

  1. Are you an admin of the channel, or a reader? Admins can check settings directly. Readers can only report what they see and ask the admin.
  2. Is the comment button missing on every post, or only some? Every post points to a missing or broken link. Some posts point to a problem with those posts' copies in the group, or to when they were published.
  3. Does everyone see the problem, or only certain people? If only some readers are affected, look at restrictions, account limits and app versions rather than channel settings.
  4. Is the button missing, or present but not working? A missing button is a channel-level issue. A button that opens a thread where you cannot type, or where comments vanish, is a discussion-group issue.

A useful trick for admins: keep a second Telegram account that is not an admin, or ask a friend. Admins see the group with full rights, which hides many problems ordinary readers run into. Testing as a normal subscriber shows you what your audience actually sees.

Cause 1: No discussion group is linked

This is the most common reason by far. Many people assume comments are a switch inside the channel. They are not; they depend on a group.

How to recognise it

  • No post in the channel has a comment button.
  • In the channel's settings, the discussion section is empty or offers to add a group.
  • Readers can only react to posts, not write anything.

How to fix it

  1. Open the channel and go to its settings (tap the channel name, then the edit option).
  2. Find the discussion section. The wording may vary slightly between app versions.
  3. Choose an existing group you own, or create a new one from that screen.
  4. Confirm the link when Telegram asks.
  5. Publish a new test post and check that the comment button appears under it.

If it still does not work

  • Make sure you are the channel owner or an admin with the right to change channel info. Admins without that right may not see the option.
  • If you picked an existing group, check that you are an admin there too. You need rights in both chats.
  • Remember that the fix applies to new posts. Older posts behave differently, which is the next cause.

Cause 2: The post was published before the group was linked

Linking a discussion group is not retroactive in the way people expect. The automatic forward only happens when a post is published, so posts that were already in the channel never got a copy in the group.

How to recognise it

  • Recent posts have a comment button, older ones do not.
  • The cut-off matches the day you linked the group, or re-linked a new one.

How to fix it

There is no setting that adds comment threads to old posts after the fact. Your options are practical rather than technical:

  1. Decide which older posts actually need discussion. Usually only a few evergreen posts do.
  2. Republish those posts as new posts. Forwarding your own old post into the channel or copying its text both create a new post, which gets a fresh thread.
  3. Optionally delete or edit the old version so readers are not split between two copies.
  4. Pin the new version if it is important, so people land on the version that accepts comments.

If it still does not work

If a post published after you linked the group still has no button, the problem is not timing. Move on to Cause 3 and Cause 4.

Cause 3: The post's copy in the discussion group was deleted

This one confuses many admins because the channel looks fine and the link is in place, yet one post has no comments or its comments suddenly vanish.

Remember the model: each channel post has a forwarded copy in the group, and comments are replies to that copy. If the copy is deleted, the thread loses its anchor.

How to recognise it

  • The link to the discussion group is still there.
  • Most posts have working comments, but one or a few do not.
  • Comments that existed on a post have disappeared all at once.
  • In the discussion group, you cannot find the forwarded copy of that post.

What deletes the copy

  • An admin cleaning up the group. Someone sees a stream of forwarded channel posts and deletes them to keep the chat tidy, not realising they are deleting the comment anchors.
  • A moderation bot. Some group bots delete forwarded messages, messages from channels, or messages containing links. Your own channel's automatic forwards can match those rules.
  • A "delete for everyone" in a hurry. When removing a spam reply, it is easy to select the post above it as well.

How to fix it

  1. Open the discussion group and scroll to where the copy should be. Check the group's recent actions log (admins can open it from the group's settings) to see who or what deleted it. The log only covers a limited recent period, so check soon.
  2. If a bot deleted it, open that bot's settings and add an exception for forwards from your own channel, or switch off the rule that matched. The exact option depends on the bot.
  3. If an admin deleted it, explain to your team that the forwarded posts in the group must be left alone.
  4. A deleted copy cannot be restored. To get a working thread again, republish the post in the channel as described in Cause 2.

If it still does not work

If copies keep vanishing after you have checked bots and admins, look at whether the group has an auto-delete timer set for messages. A timer removes the forwarded copies along with everything else once they reach that age, taking the comments with them.

Cause 4: The discussion group was unlinked, deleted or replaced

Sometimes the link itself changes. A co-admin experiments with settings, the group gets deleted during a clean-up, or the owner swaps to a new group.

How to recognise it

  • Comment buttons disappeared from all posts at roughly the same time.
  • The discussion section in the channel's settings is empty again, or shows a different group.
  • Old discussions are still visible inside the old group, but no longer under the channel posts.

How to fix it

  1. Check the channel's recent actions log to see which admin changed the discussion setting and when.
  2. If the old group still exists, link it again from the channel settings.
  3. If the old group was deleted, link a new one. Old threads will not move across; only new posts get threads in the new group.
  4. Review who has the right to change channel info. Fewer admins with that right means fewer accidental changes. Our guide on adding admins to a Telegram channel explains how to give people only the rights they need.

If it still does not work

If the setting looks correct but every post still lacks a button, update the app on the device you are checking with and look again from a non-admin account. If that account sees the button, the problem is the first device, covered in Cause 9.

Cause 5: The discussion group's permissions stop people commenting

Here the comment button is visible, and readers can even open the thread, but they cannot write anything or are pushed to do something first. The cause is the group's own settings, which apply to comments too.

How to recognise it

  • The comment button appears and shows existing comments.
  • Readers see a message about joining the group, a disabled text field, or a countdown before they can send.
  • Admins can comment normally, which is why the owner may not notice.

The group settings that affect comments

  • Members cannot send messages. If the default permission for members is set so they cannot send text, nobody except admins can comment. Some owners switch this off during a raid and forget to switch it back on.
  • Media and link permissions. If members cannot send links, stickers or media, comments containing those fail even when plain text works.
  • Slow mode. A slow mode delay limits how often each member can send. In a comment thread this feels like the field being locked after one comment.
  • Join requirements. Telegram lets public discussion groups require people to join before writing, and can require admin approval for new members. With those on, a reader who has not joined, or whose request is still waiting, cannot comment yet.
  • Private discussion group. If the group is private, readers' access depends on whether they can join it. Test with a non-member account so you see what readers see.

How to fix it

  1. Open the discussion group's settings and look at the default permissions for members.
  2. Make sure members are allowed to send messages, and decide deliberately which media and links you allow.
  3. Check whether slow mode is on and whether the delay is reasonable for a comment section.
  4. Check whether joining or admin approval is required, and decide whether that fits your channel. Requiring approval cuts spam but slows down genuine readers.
  5. Test with a non-admin account.

For the trade-offs between these controls, see our guide to slow mode and member restrictions.

If it still does not work

If general permissions are fine but one reader still cannot comment, the restriction is personal. That is Cause 6.

Cause 6: The reader is restricted or banned in the discussion group

Restrictions in the discussion group follow a person into every comment thread. A reader who was muted or removed from the group months ago may not remember it, and the channel owner may not connect the two.

How to recognise it

  • Most readers comment normally, but one person reports they cannot.
  • That person may see comments but have no text field, or their comments never appear for others.
  • The group's list of removed or restricted users includes them.

How to fix it

  1. Open the discussion group's settings and find the list of removed users and the list of exceptions or restricted members.
  2. Search for the reader by name or username.
  3. If they are listed, decide whether the restriction was intentional. If not, remove them from the list or lift the restriction.
  4. Ask the reader to close and reopen the post, then try again.

If it still does not work

If the reader is not restricted in the group, their own account may be limited by Telegram. That is Cause 8.

Cause 7: Comments are posted but then removed

Readers say they commented, but nobody else sees the comment, or it disappears a few seconds later. Something in the group is removing it.

How to recognise it

  • The commenter briefly sees their comment, then it vanishes.
  • Other readers never see it at all.
  • It happens more with comments that contain links, mentions, forwarded content or certain words.

What removes comments

  • Telegram's built-in anti-spam. Larger groups can switch on an automatic anti-spam filter in the group's admin settings. It works quietly and sometimes catches genuine comments, especially from new accounts.
  • Moderation bots. Keyword filters, link filters and "new member" rules apply to comments because comments are group messages.
  • Admins. A co-admin may be deleting comments they consider off-topic.

How to fix it

  1. Open the group's recent actions log and filter for deleted messages. It shows who deleted what, within the period the log covers.
  2. If the anti-spam filter is removing genuine comments, check whether it lets you mark false positives, and consider whether the group's spam level justifies it.
  3. If a bot is the cause, adjust its filters so normal comments pass. Links are the most common trigger.
  4. If an admin is the cause, agree on written moderation rules so readers are treated consistently.

For heavy spam, a better setup usually beats a stricter filter. See how to stop spam bots in Telegram groups.

If it still does not work

If nothing in the log shows a deletion, the comment may never have been sent. Ask the reader whether they saw an error or a red warning mark beside it. That points to Cause 8 or Cause 9.

Cause 8: The reader's own account is limited

Telegram limits accounts that it suspects of spam, often after other users report them. A limited account can still read, but may not be able to write in groups it has not joined, or in public chats generally. Comments are group messages, so they are affected.

How to recognise it

  • The reader cannot comment on any channel, not just yours.
  • They may also struggle to message people who are not in their contacts.
  • Comments fail with an error rather than being removed later.

How to fix it

The channel admin cannot fix this; only the account owner can. Telegram provides an official bot, @SpamBot, that tells you whether your account is limited and lets you ask for a review if you think it is a mistake.

  1. Open a chat with @SpamBot from Telegram search. Check that it is the official one before you write anything.
  2. Start the bot and read its answer about your account's status.
  3. If it says you are limited and you believe that is wrong, follow its steps to submit an appeal. Explain calmly what you use Telegram for.
  4. Wait for the limit to lift. Telegram decides how long this takes.

Never pay anyone who offers to "unban" your account, and never share your login code. Real Telegram staff do not ask for it. More detail is in our guide on Telegram account bans and appeals.

If it still does not work

If the bot reports no limit, go back to Cause 6 and check the group's restricted list again, then try Cause 9.

Cause 9: The app is out of date or out of sync

Sometimes everything is set up correctly and the problem is simply the device. This is especially likely when only one person, or one of your devices, sees the issue.

How to recognise it

  • The same account sees comments on one device but not another.
  • Other readers see the comment button where you do not.
  • The problem started after a long period without updating the app.

How to fix it on Android

  1. Update Telegram from the store you installed it from.
  2. Close the app completely and reopen it.
  3. If posts still look wrong, clear the app's cache from Telegram's own storage settings. Your messages are stored in Telegram's cloud, so clearing the cache does not delete them. Our guide on clearing Telegram cache explains what is safe to remove.

How to fix it on iPhone

  1. Update Telegram from the App Store.
  2. Close the app from the app switcher and open it again.
  3. Check that the phone has a stable connection and that low data settings are not stopping content from loading.

How to fix it on Desktop

  1. Check for updates in the app's settings, or install the latest version.
  2. Restart the app.
  3. If posts still look stale, clear the local cache from the advanced storage settings.

How to fix it in a web browser

Telegram's web versions do not always offer every feature at the same time as the apps.

  1. Reload the page.
  2. Try the other web version if one exists, or a different browser.
  3. Compare with the mobile app. If the app shows comments and the web version does not, the web client is the limitation.

If it still does not work

Log out and back in on that one device only if you are sure you have access to your login method and know your two-step verification password. Losing access is far worse than a missing button.

Worked examples

These are illustrative scenarios, not real cases, to show how the causes combine.

Example: comments on half the posts

A recipe channel linked a discussion group on a Monday. The owner complains that comments "only work sometimes". Looking closer, every post from Monday onward has a button, and every earlier post does not. This is Cause 2. The fix is to republish the few evergreen recipes people still ask about and pin a short note saying where discussions happen.

Example: one post's comments vanished overnight

A tech news channel had a lively thread under one post. The next morning the thread was gone. The recent actions log shows a moderation bot deleted the forwarded copy of that post, because it contained a link to an external site. This is Cause 3. The owner adds an exception for forwards from the channel, then republishes the post. The old comments are lost, so the owner posts a short apology in the group.

Example: nobody except admins can comment

A study channel switched the discussion group to "members cannot send messages" during a spam wave two weeks ago. The admins comment freely, so nobody noticed until readers complained. This is Cause 5. The owner restores sending for members and turns on slow mode instead, which limits floods without silencing everyone.

Example: one reader cannot comment anywhere

A reader says comments fail on every channel they follow. That is not a problem with any single channel. It points to Cause 8, an account limit, and the reader checks their status with @SpamBot.

Admin checklist for healthy comments

Run through this whenever you change settings or add a new admin:

  • The channel has a discussion group linked, and it is the group you expect.
  • You and at least one backup admin are admins in both the channel and the group.
  • Members of the group are allowed to send messages.
  • Media and link permissions match what you want in comments.
  • Slow mode, if on, has a delay that suits a comment section.
  • Joining and approval requirements are a deliberate choice, not a leftover.
  • No moderation bot deletes forwards from your own channel.
  • No auto-delete timer is quietly removing post copies.
  • The anti-spam filter is not catching normal comments.
  • You have tested the latest post from a non-admin account.

Common mistakes

  • Treating comments as a channel switch. Comments live in the group. Looking only at channel settings misses half of the possible causes.
  • Tidying up the discussion group by deleting forwarded posts. Those copies are the anchors of every thread. Deleting them deletes the comments.
  • Testing only as an admin. Admins bypass most restrictions, so they rarely see what readers see.
  • Fixing a raid with a permanent lockdown. Switching off messages for members stops spam and also stops every genuine comment. Slow mode or join requirements are usually better, and should be reviewed afterwards.
  • Re-linking a different group to "refresh" comments. That breaks the link between older posts and their threads. Only do it when you mean to move discussions to a new group.
  • Logging out to fix a display glitch. It rarely helps, and it risks locking you out if you do not have your two-step verification password to hand.

What to do next

Once comments work, think about how to make them useful. A comment section with no prompts often stays quiet. Ask a clear question at the end of posts where opinions matter, reply to early comments yourself, and set simple rules so readers know what is welcome.

Comments are one of the signals that show a channel has an active audience. If you want to see how your channel compares on measured figures such as views and posting frequency, our guide on Telegram channel engagement rate explains what those numbers mean. When your channel is ready to be discovered, you can submit it to the directory for free; every listing is reviewed by a person before it appears.

FAQ

Can I turn on comments without a discussion group?

No. Telegram's channel comments are built on a linked discussion group. Without one, posts can only receive reactions. Linking a group takes a minute from the channel's settings.

Why do my old posts have no comment button?

Comment threads are created when a post is published into a channel that already has a group linked. Posts published earlier never got a copy in the group, so they have no thread. Republishing an important post is the only way to give it one.

Can I switch off comments on just one post?

Telegram does not offer a simple per-post comment switch in the channel. Some admins delete that post's forwarded copy in the discussion group, which removes its thread. Be aware this also deletes any comments already written there.

Do readers have to join the discussion group to comment?

It depends on the group's settings. A public discussion group can let readers comment without joining, or require them to join, and can also require admin approval. A private group limits commenting to people who can access it.

Where do deleted comments go?

Nowhere you can restore them from. Admins can see recent deletions, and who made them, in the group's recent actions log for a limited period. After that, there is no record in the app.

Why can I comment from my phone but not from the web version?

Telegram's web clients sometimes lag behind the apps or handle threads differently. If the mobile app works, the setup is fine and the limitation is the web client. Try another browser or the other web version.

Summary

A missing comment button means the post has no thread in a linked discussion group: no group is linked, the post predates the link, the group changed, or the post's copy in the group was deleted. A button that is present but does not work points inside the group: member permissions, slow mode, join requirements, a personal restriction, anti-spam, a bot, or an admin removing comments. When only one person is affected, check their account status and app version. Test as a normal reader, check the recent actions log early, and leave the forwarded copies in the group alone.
