How many members a Telegram group can hold, why channels have no subscriber limit, what broadcast groups are, and what to do when your group is getting full.
A Telegram group can hold up to 200,000 members, while a channel can have an unlimited number of subscribers. When a group approaches its limit, Telegram lets admins convert it into a broadcast group with no member limit, but then only admins can post. There are also smaller limits around adding people directly, which is why large groups and channels grow through invite links rather than manual adding.
The sections below explain each one and what it means in practice.
A Telegram group is a chat where everyone can talk, subject to the permissions admins set. Telegram supports up to 200,000 members per group.
Telegram has historically had two kinds of group:
In current apps, you rarely have to think about this. When a basic group needs a supergroup feature or grows past the basic limit, the app upgrades it. The upgrade is one-way. Most people simply see "a group". For the full background, see Telegram group vs supergroup vs gigagroup.
Long before a group reaches the limit, managing it becomes the real challenge. Thousands of active members can produce more messages than anyone can read, and spam bots target large public groups. That is why large groups lean on:
See how to moderate a large Telegram group for the practical side.
When a group is close to the 200,000-member limit, Telegram lets its owner convert it into a broadcast group, which Telegram's developer documentation calls a gigagroup. A broadcast group has no member limit.
The trade-off is significant:
The option only appears for groups near the limit, and Telegram may change exactly when it is offered. If your community depends on members talking to each other, converting removes the thing that made it a community. Many owners instead start a second group or split by topic or language.
A channel is a one-way broadcast: admins post, subscribers read. Channels have no subscriber limit, which is why the largest audiences on Telegram are channels rather than groups.
A channel can be paired with a discussion group, so that subscribers can comment on posts. The discussion group is a normal group and has the normal group limit. In a very large channel, comments come from the people who join the discussion group, not from every subscriber. See how to enable comments on a Telegram channel.
If you are choosing between a group and a channel, see Telegram channel vs group.
When you create a channel or group, you can add up to 200 of your contacts directly. Beyond that, people join themselves:
Even within the 200, adding someone directly depends on their privacy settings. Many people only allow contacts, or nobody, to add them to groups and channels. In that case the app usually offers to send them an invite link instead. See can't add members to a Telegram group for the reasons an add can fail.
Adding people without asking is the main tool of spammers. Limits on direct adding, together with privacy settings, push large groups and channels to grow through links people choose to tap. That protects users and, in the long run, gives you an audience that actually wanted to join.
There is also a limit on the user's side. A standard account can only be a member of a limited number of groups and channels at once; when you reach it, Telegram shows a message saying you have hit the limit. Telegram says Premium raises this so you can join up to 1,000 channels.
If you reach the limit:
For channel owners, this limit is a small reason why keeping readers interested matters: someone near their limit leaves the channels they value least.
Every member of a group counts towards its limit, whatever their role:
The member count shown in the group's info is the figure that matters. For a channel, the info page shows the subscriber count instead.
The limits are the same for private and public groups and channels. Being private changes how people find and join (only through invite links), not how many can join. See public vs private Telegram channels for the differences that do exist.
Groups and channels can require admins to approve each person who uses an invite link. Approval does not change the limits, but it gives you control over who takes the available places, which matters more as a group fills up.
Telegram also has limits on things like the number of admins, bots in a chat, public usernames per account and invite links. These are rarely reached, and Telegram shows a clear message when you hit one. Because these numbers change and are not all published in one official place, follow the message in the app rather than a list from elsewhere.
An example of how the limits shape decisions (illustration only).
A language-learning community starts as a group for a few classmates. As it grows to hundreds, the app upgrades it to a supergroup. The admins add slow mode and topics for grammar, vocabulary and speaking practice.
At several thousand members, the main chat is too busy for beginners. The owners create a channel for lessons and announcements, with no subscriber limit, and link the original group as its discussion group. Lessons go to everyone; conversation stays in the group.
Years later, if the group itself approached 200,000 members, they would face a choice: convert it to a broadcast group (no more member chat) or keep it as is and open a second group, for example split by language level. Because conversation is the point of their group, they would choose the second.
200,000 members. A broadcast group, which only admins can post in, has no limit.
No. Channels can have an unlimited number of subscribers.
Up to 200 contacts when creating it, subject to their privacy settings. After that, people join through links or search.
New people cannot join until space frees up. The owner may be offered conversion to a broadcast group, which removes the limit but stops members posting.
No. The conversion is one-way.
Your account has reached the limit on groups and channels you can be in. Leave some, or check whether Premium's higher limit suits you.
Telegram groups hold up to 200,000 members, channels have no subscriber limit, and a group near its limit can become a broadcast group with no limit but no member chat. Direct adding is capped at 200 contacts when creating a chat and depends on privacy settings, so growth comes through links and search. If your community is outgrowing a group, move announcements to a channel and split discussion into focused groups before considering a one-way conversion. When your channel is ready for new readers, you can submit it to TGDirectory for free.
