Why a Telegram invite link says it is expired or invalid, how to tell which cause applies, and what both members and admins can do to get a working link.
When Telegram says an invite link is expired or invalid, the link no longer leads to a chat you can join. Usually an admin set it to expire, it reached its maximum number of uses, or it was revoked and replaced. Less often the chat was deleted, its public username changed, you are banned from it, or the link was copied incorrectly. The only full fix is a new, working link from someone in the chat.
There are two kinds of links that lead into Telegram chats, and they fail in different ways.
Admins can give an invite link an expiry date, a maximum number of uses, a name, and a requirement for admin approval. They can also revoke a link at any time. Each of those settings is a way a link can stop working. Our guide to Telegram invite links explains them from the admin side.
A surprising number of "invalid" links are simply damaged. Check these first; they take seconds.
If the link looks complete and correct, work through the causes below.
What happened. The admin set the link to stop working after a certain date or time. This is common for event groups, limited-time offers and giveaways.
How to recognise it. The link worked for others earlier, and the post you found it in is not recent.
What to do. Ask the person who shared it, or someone already in the chat, for a current link. If you found the link in a channel post or on a website, look for a newer post from the same source.
What happened. The admin limited how many people can join through that link. Once that number joined, the link stopped working for everyone else.
How to recognise it. The link was shared widely, perhaps as part of a "first come" offer, and friends who tried earlier got in.
What to do. Ask for a new link. If the limit was deliberate, for example a group meant for a fixed number of people, there may be no space for you.
What happened. An admin revoked the link. Admins do this when a link leaks to the wrong place, attracts spam, or when they simply want to control who joins. Revoking the main link usually creates a new one in its place, and the old one stops working at once.
How to recognise it. The link was shared publicly, or it is old. Other people with the same link also cannot join.
What to do. Contact the chat's admins or whoever shared the link, and ask for the current one.
What happened. The group or channel was deleted by its owner, or blocked by Telegram. Every link to it stops working.
How to recognise it. No link from any source works, and the chat cannot be found in search. Former members no longer see it in their chat lists.
What to do. There is nothing to join. If the community moved somewhere else, its organisers may have announced a new chat on another platform or website.
What happened. Public links use the chat's username. If the owner changes the username, the old link stops leading there. If the chat is switched from public to private, it no longer has a public link at all. Another chat could even take the old username later.
How to recognise it. The link is short and contains a readable name rather than a random code. It either fails or opens a different chat than you expected.
What to do. Search Telegram for the chat's name to find its current username, but check carefully that you have the real one; copycat channels use similar names. If the chat went private, you need an invite link from someone inside. Admins can read how to change a Telegram channel link to avoid breaking old links unexpectedly.
What happened. If an admin removed you from the group or channel, you are usually kept on its list of removed users. Links will not let you back in while you are on that list.
How to recognise it. The link works for other people but not for you.
What to do. If you think the removal was a mistake, contact an admin privately and ask politely. Only an admin can take you off the removed list. Creating a new account to get around a ban breaks most groups' rules and can lead to that account being removed too.
What happened. Telegram can limit accounts it suspects of spam. A limited account may be unable to join certain chats. Telegram can also slow down an account that joins many chats in a short time.
How to recognise it. Joining fails for several different links, not only one, or you see a message asking you to wait.
What to do. If Telegram asks you to wait, wait and try later. Check your account's status with the official @SpamBot from Telegram search. If you are limited and think it is a mistake, appeal through the bot. Our guide on Telegram account bans and appeals explains limits.
Some links do not let you in immediately. If the admin turned on approval for a link, tapping it sends a request to join instead. Telegram shows that your request was sent, and you wait for an admin to approve it.
This is easy to mistake for a broken link because nothing seems to happen. If you see a message that your request was sent, the link is working. Wait for approval, or contact an admin if it takes a long time. Some groups ask applicants a question through a bot first; read any message you receive after requesting.
If you tap a link to a chat you already belong to, Telegram simply opens that chat. If you expected a join screen and landed in a familiar chat, you are already in it. Check your archive and folders if you cannot find it in your main list; our guide on Telegram folders explains where chats can hide.
When a link stops working, scammers sometimes step in. Watch for:
Telegram never needs your login code to let you join a chat. Get new links from the admins, the official website or social accounts of the project, or the person who invited you. Our guide on how to spot Telegram scams has more warning signs, and never share your Telegram login code explains why the code is so valuable to scammers.
If members often report broken links, the setup is usually the cause. A few habits fix it.
Example (illustrative): A study group shares one invite link in a pinned post, a class forum and a social media bio. Spam accounts find the social media link, so the admin revokes the main link. All three places break at once, and students report "expired link" for days. With three named links, the admin could have revoked only the leaked one and kept the forum and pinned post working.
If you list your channel on TGDirectory, a public username gives readers a stable way to reach you; you can submit your channel for free.
The same link cannot be revived once it expires or is revoked. An admin can create a new link with new settings, and share that instead.
The most likely reasons are that you are on the chat's removed users list, your account is limited, or your copy of the link is damaged. Ask your friend to send the link again by copy and paste.
The link requires admin approval. Your request is waiting for an admin to accept it. The link is working.
Ask someone already in it, or check the official website or social accounts of the group's organisers for a current link. Search Telegram by name only if the group is public, and check carefully that you have found the genuine one.
No. A public link based on a username works until the owner changes or removes the username, or the channel is deleted or blocked.
An expired or invalid invite link means the link no longer leads anywhere you can join. Check first that the link is complete and copied exactly. Then the usual causes are an expiry date, a use limit or a revoke; less often the chat was deleted, its username changed, you were removed, or your account cannot join right now. Ask the admins or the person who invited you for a fresh link, never a stranger. Admins avoid most of these reports by using permanent links for permanent places and separate named links for everything else.
